Nokia Lumia 1020 VS. Nokia 808 PureView: More Than Meets The Eye!

Hello MNB’ers!!!

First, I hope everyone is having a great day. Second….I made it back to the AT&T store and spent a little more time with the 1020…and…I have about 60+ comparison photos and about 10 videos to share. I won’t upload them all here so please see my Flickr page for the original 5MP photos and my YouTube page for the comparison videos! After taking so many pictures and videos, I can honestly say without a doubt, the Lumia 1020 is the more enjoyable of the 2 as when it comes to the act of taking photos. Now, I am not talking about diving into settings, specifications and all that, I am simply talking about POINTING THE PHONE AND TAKING A PICTURE. Please consider the environment that I was in and the limited time (roughly 2 hours…time to Bluetooth photos and videos took up a lot of time).

PLEASE take a look at the full-sized images and the videos at their highest resolution. There are advantages and disadvantages to both devices but it is up to you to decide what works best for you.

NOTE: Click on the cropped comparison to view a larger photo to see the details. No conspiracy here, no bias, just untouched photos, automatic settings, all tripod, 100% crops.

Special OIS Video Request:

Reader Yihang asked for a handheld 1020 video that demonstrates the OIS in action. I had NO INTENTION of uploading this video to YouTube as it was from my FIRST time shooting a video on the 1020 on my first visit to AT&T for my original Lumia 1020 Hands-On. In the video, when I say “no other phone but THIS phone”… I am talking about the 808 when referencing Lossless Zoom. So bear with me, this video isn’t that great, it is all tilted as I was talking more than I was looking through the viewfinder and I never planned to use the video for anything. This is the only handheld video from the 1020 that I have but it should give an indication on how the 1020s 2nd generation OIS can stabilize a video even when you are not paying attention to what you are filming. :)

Please keep in mind that this comparison is NOT a scientific, lab controlled comparison. My goal was to show the type of photos that an average consumer will take, simply pointing and shooting with one MAJOR difference…..99% of the photos were taken with both phones on a tripod. The only photos that were not taken on a tripod were the ones where the N8 was on the tripod (on my Flickr page). Those were handheld to the best of my ability but not entirely with the same framing. The average consumer may not have a tripod so the 808 pictures may come out blurrier in their case due to the lack of OIS. I used the mini tripod to try to get as controlled and as accurate comparison as possible. Please forgive the barren and unexciting subjects in the photos…there is only so much to see when confined to a limited area around a secured desk. Feel free to download and analyze the original photos and I look forward to what you, our dear readers, have to say.

As always, and the MNB team means it, thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog,

P.S. Thank you AT&T reps, for allowing a second hands on and an unusual amount of time with a device that is not yet on sale. I also want to sincerely thank my wife. She has been patient with me, putting up with me getting home late from the AT&T store, missing dinner and being on the computer into the midnight hour. Thank you hun…I will upgrade your 920 to a 1020 as soon as I can! :)

Windows Phone Next App Star Runner Up Proshot app was just updated with a new manual focus controls that looks and feels like the Nokia Pro Cam app , except a little more feature rich! , a feature I love is the HD viewer with EXIF readings.

Eddie Kezeli the creator of Proshot is very active over at WPcentral forums answering any question about his app you could  throw at him , a forum thread created by a user about loving his app have garnered over 50000+ views !!!  from sample pictures to requests and Q&A with the developer.

Proshot is what Nokia Pro Cam hopes to be in terms of features (timelapse, burst and self-timer) , the only thing Nokia Pro Cam can edge it would be the UI/UX , but Eddie is prepared for this as he’s working on version 3.0 with an updated UI. that he promised will be very METRO.

Now for the change log:

If you want to try Proshot or if you own this app you can get  the update here

it goes for 0.99$  with a trial option.

DPReview: Nokia Lumia 1020 looks impressive…just what we’d hoped!

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 03:42 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 11.37.29

Quick heads up. Camera experts DPReview take a look at the Nokia Lumia 1020 and their headline says the Nokia Lumia 1020 looks impressive. This is just a preliminary test but they said from what they’ve seen they’re excited.

We can only truly give very a preliminary conclusion at this point based on a day of playing with the device, but we are excited about what we’ve seen so far.

http://connect.dpreview.com/post/1305711237/lumia-1020?news

From an imaging perspective, the Lumia 1020 appears to be just what we’d hoped: a more advanced version of the PureView technology that blew us away when we first saw it on the 808. And this time around, the Lumia 1020 has even more to offer the photographer who wants to use their mobile as a serious camera. From OIS to an even faster lens to that add-on camera grip that nearly had us convinced we were using a “real” camera, the Lumia 1020 seems to offer a lot of potential. Our initial trials with the device’s auto mode don’t explore the Lumia 1020 fully; we need to delve further into the camera’s actual imaging capabilities: it’s here that we’d like to see what this camera can do.

It’s funny to hear trolls moan about the praise the Nokia Lumia 1020. First it was “wait until reviewers get hold of it” and then it’s “wait until particular reviewers I prefer have a go at it” one such example was wanting feedback from GSM Arena. But they already told us the 1020 is in a class of its own. No other comes close.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/07/14/gsm-arena-nokia-lumia-1020-camera-in-a-class-of-its-own-no-other-high-end-smartphone-camera-comes-close/

What else would you like to moan about, troll?

Cheers Werner Ruotsalainen for the tip!

Gizmodo: Nokia Lumia 1020 – the best camera ever in a smartphone; At Last a Terrific Camera in a Great Phone

Hurrah, even Gizmodo are piling all the 1020 camera worship :D . And they like the phone part too.

  • For the first time ever, mankind has made a phone that’s really two things at once without being a monstrosity.
  • At Last a Terrific Camera in a Great Phone

  • To go from simple point-and-shoot mode into pro-mode, you simply give the on-screen shutter release a little swipe and a neat slider-based interface gives you full manual control of camera settings from white balance to ISO, and even focus. And man, the manual focus is so cool. Nothing like this has ever been done on a smartphone camera before.
  • How badly does this camera kick every other smartphone camera’s ass?
  •  oversampling makes a huge difference—and how it expands our options
  • 1020 leaves you with a huge amount of extra data so you can keep zooming in without blowing up your images. And look at how crappy the iPhone looks at comparatively.
  • On both image quality and functionality, the Lumia 1020 has the best camera that’s ever been put in a smartphone.

Come on Nokia. Get your banners, posters and ads at the ready. So many sound bites and awesome quotes!

Engadget: Nokia Lumia 1020 Review: Simply put, the camera is stunning…other phones just aren’t this good

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 12:48 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 08.39.04

Here’s another very well written review of the Nokia Lumia 1020, this time from Engadget. It goes really far into explaining how the camera technology in the 1020 works, and I’m rather impressed with the effort that Brad Molen put into this piece. Props. Knowing everything inside, Brad says that it “undoubtedly has a lot of you drooling”. But that’s on paper. How is it in action?  Unless you’ve missed the avalanche of praises appearing from earlier reviews, you have nothing to worry about.

http://www.engadget.com/2013/07/24/nokia-lumia-1020-review/

Nokia has a lengthy history of backing up its boastful imaging claims, and fortunately that reputation continues with the 1020. Simply put, the camera is stunning.

  • Nokia Pro – arguably one of the best imaging apps on ANY platform.

Some doubted Elop’s claims yesterday about the performance of the 1020 against the 808, but the reviewers here seem to be in agreement.

Images taken in the dark turned out with more light, more detail and less noise than the HTC One and 808

We’ve been waiting a long time for the 808 PureView to get a Windows Phone counterpart with the same (if not better) imaging prowess. Finally, it’s here.

Comparing against the 808 is great, but most users unfortunately won’t know the 808 ever existed. We need to let them know that the Nokia Lumia 1020, that will soon be available to them (it is already in the US for pre-order, arriving to some customers tomorrow) that this is the best smartphone camera ever.

The detail..mmm

  • The lossless zoom on the 1020 completely blew us away; we could legibly see signs from a distance of over 100 yards, and we were able to zoom in on faces of people who were barely noticeable in the original image. We were also very impressed by the vast amount of detail in every shot. As you can imagine, there’s a lot to love.

Brad tweeted that this was his favourite shot. :) This is just a screenshot. Image here

Rich Recording test: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Samsung Galaxy S4 filmed on 925

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 12:40 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-23 at 19.45.28

Here’s a comparison of the Nokia Lumia 1020 against the Samsung Galaxy S4 in terms of audio recording. It’s filmed on the Nokia Lumia 925 so you can actually appreciate the quality of the recording.

PhoneArena: Nokia Lumia 1020 – “Details are astoundingly sharp! Frankly, its quality is unrivaled at the moment!”

Posted: 24 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 07.47.25

Singing songs of praises for the Nokia Lumia 1020 today. Is the 41MP camera gimmick? Hell no, it is delivering again and again and again in quality and performance. PhoneArena says there’s nothing compromised with the results. 1020 also excels in Macro (I believe some 808 users had some difficulty due to not being able to go in as close though the zoom helped there) focusing on a particular point and giving some smooth bokeh. “In terms of color reproduction, we can't complain either about its accuracy, as it's able to cast a very neutral stance”

In completely pitch dark it tends to struggle. Understandable but more importantly “much better than what we see with comparable shots taken by the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4″ When there is a bit of light, it’s able to draw out more details, “Frankly, its quality is unrivaled at the moment!”.

Man oh man, it makes me smile so much to see that these independent reviews are hailing the camera. This is such a standout feature and Nokia needs to capitalise on finally getting the imaging jewel we first saw in Symbian on the Nokia Lumia 1020. People will care when they learn what they can have. When they see, this is the future, this is what can be achieved right now in your camera that is responsible for preserving moments and memories, they will want the Nokia Lumia 1020. They say some might consider a 920 + separate camera, but they answer that themselves “But why carry around two devices when you can have the best of both worlds?”. I won’t always carry a separate camera, but I will always carry my phone. Why not have astonishingly great photos all the time, eh? :)

  • 24FPS video mode interesting to find. They like the more flowy nature.
  • Unparalleled photo and video quality

MobileTechReview: Nokia Lumia 1020 – “Wow! This is as good as my Digital SLR! Crazy amount of detail, Wow, Stunning!”

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 11:41 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-07-24 at 07.28.05

It’s the turn of Lisa from MobileTechReview to review the Nokia Lumia 1020. On the

camera she’s really impressed with that 41MP PureView camera. “Crazy detail” and does great job with colours and contrast. Photos looking “wow, awesome”. Macro is so sharp and so stunning. “Can you see that?! I mean, hah! This is as good as my Digital SLR!“. All this in Auto Settings except in some indoor situations.

BOOM. You may argue on the technicalities but for a seasoned professional like Lisa to even consider that comment let alone say it on her review.

Looking at a silver jaguar, Lisa says this often causes difficulty when snapping in other cameras where it whites out and loses detail, but no we have plenty of detail. You can see the details on the xenon headlight easily, you can see reflections and you can read the hubcap!

“Really an ingenious way to work with zooming”

It makes me happy to see that what Nokia fans loved in the 808 is slowly going to be brought to the masses. This brings something new. Reframing pictures to find a picture within a picture that you never would have considered before or would otherwise have missed.

I’m on a train with patchy signal so I’ve only gotten half way.

Is it a great camera phone? It’s a stunning camera phone and keeps things small unlike the galaxy S4 Zoom.

TheVerge Nokia Lumia 1020 review:”it felt like the future; The Camera Phone to End all Camera Phones” >808?

Posted: 23 Jul 2013 10:20 PM PDT

TheVerge have published their Nokia Lumia 1020 review today including some photo samples!

http://www.theverge.com/2013/7/24/4550342/nokia-lumia-1020-review

The Verge review

The Verge review

We rarely hear honest to god  Nokia excitements coming from TheVerge staff who aren’t Tom Warren  , but David Pierce clearly sets a tone for the whole article even if people didn’t read on they would leave with a great feeling about the Lumia 1020.

Here are some interesting snippets:

“I was way ahead of the game. I'm already slightly obsessive about taking pictures at concerts, but that night I had a real advantage: I was holding the Lumia 1020, Nokia's new 41-megapixel cameraphone. It's an LTE-enabled, high-definition Windows Phone 8 device available on AT&T for $299 on contract, but it's mostly a camera. An insanely high-res camera created to vanquish all smartphones and point-and-shoots in its path.” David Pierce describing an awesome concert.

It’s nice to salute Nokia’s Clear Black Display

“It's the result of Nokia's ClearBlack display technology, which makes the screen viewable outdoors and usable with gloves on. That's worth slightly-off whites any day of the week, though. “

You must resist the urge to skip all the pictures in the Verge’s gallery and go right to the night pictures (hint: AWESOME)

Elop was awesome at presenting the Lumia 1020

“Shooting with so many megapixels has another benefit, too: a hugely powerful 6x digital zoom. Normally digital zoom is something to run far away from, because all you're doing is cropping a photo and losing lots of data along the way, but here there's plenty of data to go around. Thanks to really solid image stabilization, photos tend to be clear no matter how far you zoom. “Shoot first,” CEO Stephen Elop said at the 1020's launch event, “zoom later.” He's right: I took dozens of shots with the Lumia 1020 while much too far away from my subject, and then zoomed in later to get the exact shot I wanted.”

Edit: Jay

Music to my ears, a beautiful sight to see. It performs on the camera aspect just as we would expect and more.

Although nearly everything else about the 1020 is newer and better than the 808, Nokia didn't touch the ridiculous camera much. Thanks to a huge 1/1.5-inch sensor, the 1020 takes better pictures than any phone I've ever used (including the 808), and is better in most conditions than just about any $299 point-and-shoot camera. From the remarkable dynamic range to the astonishing clarity, it's just a phenomenal camera. I spent a long time looking at photos for imperfections, only to find that most photos had none. I don't know how Nokia does it, or how no one else has figured out what Nokia is doing, but clearly there's some kind of magic happening in Finland.
