Video: N950 Lock Screen Bug is Harmless – Allows no access Posted: 31 Mar 2013 05:49 PM PDT I was meant to post this the other day, but got caught up in work. Jay posted about the Harmattan lock screen bug on the N950. Sure, in this day and age, privacy is a big deal and lock screen work arounds are pretty big issues. I had tested this on my N950 when I first saw it a few weeks back, but seeing as I got the result you’ll see in the video, I figured why post about something thats just plain misleading. Since Gizmodo has done the misleading part, I figured why not show the truth. So here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUvO2ebRto4 As you can see, there is NO ACCESS to anything. The N950 automatically locks itself after a second or two. Now, the N950 in this video is running Stock PR 1.3 , so I got hold of an N950 that was on an earlier version of Stock Harmattan (so early in fact, its a pre-release beta). Guess what? The N950 locks itself straight away as well! |
Posted: 31 Mar 2013 04:00 PM PDT Nokia rebuilds Ovi platform for Nokia Lumia devices. Espoo, Finland – Starting with the Nokia Lumia 520 and 720 devices reaching availability in April, the first Nokia services on these handsets will be rebranded back to the iconic ‘Ovi’ services in a transition expected to continue into early 2014. Each of the services under the Nokia and ‘Here’ umbrella will simply be rebranded back as Ovi, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps. Nokia’s EVP of Sales and Marketing, Chris Weber, explains the transition:
Nokia Collection, Nokia’s branch of Lumia unique and exclusive apps currently found in the Windows Phone store will be rebranded to ‘Ovi Collection’, promising to strengthen the compelling Ovi brand experience across our suite of apps including: Ovi Store, Ovi Drive, Ovi Glam Me, Ovi Music, Ovi NFC Writer, Ovi Pulse Beta, Ovi Reading, Ovi Trailers, Ovi City Lens and Ovi Transit. Ovi Store exceeds over 20 million downloads a day and continues to grow rapidly for Nokia consumers looking for applications, games and other content. Nokia wants Nokia Lumia owners to capitalise in the new Ovi Store experience for their Windows Phone applications. The new Ovi Store for Nokia Lumia comes without data restriction, enabling larger downloads over 3G previously only possible over WiFi. Ovi Store will eventually replace the Windows Phone store for all Nokia Lumia devices by the end of 2013. Windows Phone Developers and publishers for Nokia Lumia will have access to Ovi Store’s global reach and rapid growth for driving downloads and potential monetization opportunities. Dean Pattrick, Nokia’s Head of Entertainment, details the shift to Ovi Music:
Nokia promises to strengthen the Ovi apps for Windows Phone, with upcoming apps such as Flipboard, Snapchat and Vine to be released within the upcoming weeks. |
Video: Nokia Lumia 520, 720p HD video sample Posted: 31 Mar 2013 03:38 PM PDT So we’ve had the unboxing, photo samples and now onto a video sample. Last year, the cheapest Lumia (at launch) the 610 couldn’t do HD recording at all (it was an unfortunate budget Lumia that didn’t really have the swift flair of the others, and introduced additional hindrances I wasn’t used to on WP). This time around, the 610′s successor, the 620 is already achieving tons of praises. What more for the 520 which is a whole category below yet still a whole lot better?

WSJ: Nokia nearing decision time with Siemens over NSN Posted: 31 Mar 2013 03:23 PM PDT Whilst often described as ‘bloated’, last quarter, NSN turned a profit. WSJ notes NSN accounted for 46% of Nokia’s sales last year vs 30% when Elop arrived, NSN appeared to be valuable in this waiting game. Siemens is however looking to leave the joint venture. WSJ says NSN is one of Nokia’s most valuable assets now, especially with the difficulties facing their handset division. ‘Analyst’ Pierre Ferragu says there probably won’t even be a buyer for the handset division (Good. Keep your mitts off :p).

Windows Phone Store Link to Instagram? Posted: 31 Mar 2013 02:16 PM PDT I’m not quite sure what this is. It appears to be Instagram on the windows phone store. It appears to act like the real store, I mean my user account is there on the top corner :/
It’s an otherwise very elaborate hoax if it is one :p Cheers Harangue for the tip! Fire up them sepia cat cannons.

MyDreamNokia #86: Lumia N-Watch Posted: 31 Mar 2013 12:26 PM PDT Here’s another cool Dream Nokia; the Lumia watch is Nokia’s answer to the unannounced and non-existent iWatch; which everyone seems convinced is coming soon. The Lumia watch caries a smaller display that shows you a bunch of live tiles on the go (plus the time of course); along with quick access to some important features on your phone such as weather, maps, phone, music etc. The watch syncs with the Lumia series via NFC and has an on board calorie meter, compass, pressure indicator and 4G LTE. I don’t know about you guys, but I think smart-watches are a bit “too” much; I have to glance at my watch 3 times before I see the time, let alone adding extra distractions. |
HERE Drive+ Beta Pulled From WP Marketplace? Posted: 31 Mar 2013 11:24 AM PDT Here’s some interesting news, users on Reddit have mentioned that they’re no longer able to find HERE Drive + in the marketplace as of yesterday. Searching for HERE Drive brings up City Lens, Maps and other applications, but no Drive app; However Here Drive (not +) is available for some users, but this app isn’t meant to be installed on Lumia devices at the moment, and is meant for other WP OEM usage. Hopefully there’s nothing serious going on. (we’ve reached out tot eh guys in the mapping team, and will let you know once they get back to us)

MyDreamNokia #85: Transforming Jet Fighter Nokia (N9) Posted: 31 Mar 2013 08:51 AM PDT This isn’t the most practical thing in the world, but it’s definitely one of the coolest. No stranger to transformer phones, Nokia transformers have actually been in blockbuster movies (Hey N93i). This Nokia, fabula design with no WP buttons at the bottom (so not lumia, unless it’s a lumia sans wp buttons – I’d like that) transforms into a jet fighter.
The main iconic fabula centre-piece is so sleek, no? OLIVE GREEN STUDIO(NOKIA) from Ibtikar Design on Vimeo. |
Photoplay (Instagram alternative) launches for WP (and iOS & Android) Posted: 31 Mar 2013 04:22 AM PDT Earlier this week, Photoplay launched, with apps for Windows Phone, Android and iOS. This seems like a very viable alternative to Instagram. I've been using it for the last few days and absolutely love it! (Go follow me – MFaroTusino). Photoplay is about taking great images, and sharing them, with the choice to filter a bit. This sharing of filter-processed images is just like Instagram, however I feel its a better implementation. It only has around 8 filters, and seems to focus more on the sharing aspect, then the editing one. By all means, you can edit, and there is nothing wrong with that! (I've applied filters before – but only if it enhances the image). In the last few days, I noticed several "top" images were Windows/Windows Phone 8 related. Now, it seems to be a combination of those, cute girls, cats and island paradises. Obviously as more users join, the trend of the "top" images will change, but its nice to see the WP ecosystem be up there, even if its triumph is short lived. Here's the app info as written by the dev:
