Nokia Australia Promotion: Free Wireless Charging Kit for Lumias bought April 1 2013 – May 31 2013 Posted: 02 Apr 2013 06:43 PM PDT MJ tipped me about a promo Nokia Australia is running that involves free Wireless Charging kits for new Lumia owners. If you purchase a Lumia 820 or Lumia 920 between April 1 and May 31, you’ll receive a free Wireless Charger (or if you have the Lumia 820, you’ll get the Charging shell as well). This is great news for new owners (not so great for early adopters like me ). If you’ve bought (or are looking to buy) a new Lumia, then this is an awesome promotion. It seems most countries around the globe have doen similar promos, so its nice that Australia is taking part too. Source: Nokia Australia |
Accessories: Nokia CC-3058 for Lumia 820 (Coloured Shells) Posted: 02 Apr 2013 06:34 PM PDT Wasn’t too sure if I was going to post about the exchangeable shells for the Lumia 820 or not. After all, they are exactly the same as the one you get with your product out of the box. Still, since I have now got a small collection of the shells, I figured why not (even if it is just to show off the colours). The CC-3058 is the standard, non-wireless charging shell. It comes in a range of glossy colours, including yellow, red, cyan, purple and white, and also in matte with yellow, black and grey variants. Being genuine Nokia products, they obviously fit the device extremely well and of a great build quality. However, be warned that if you put your phone of rough surfaces, with the glossy shell, it will get scratched. I gave my mum my second Lumia 820 with my purple shell and the result of her putting it on every surface she can find, is evident below. There is nothing really more for me to say, so just enjoy the various colours I have. (If you’re in Australia – or know someone in Australia – Shantek Accessories have every colour available and are decently priced) |
Lumiappdates: Nokia Music App Updated – Live Tile enhancements and more v3.8.12.731 Posted: 02 Apr 2013 01:08 PM PDT There’s quite an update that just got pushed to Nokia Music. Details are available in the screenshot. This is dated today, April 2nd, to v3.8.12.731.

Nokia leading in India with 21.8% overall marketshare, 1s in feature phones, 2nd in smartphones. Posted: 02 Apr 2013 11:11 AM PDT
Some more good news coming from India. As the mobile market grows, Nokia is reported to have captured 21.8% marketshare in 2012 putting them ahead of Samsung’s 13.7% and Micromax at 6.6%. In feature phones, Nokia has 22.5% to Samsung’s 11.5%. Things reverse when it comes to smartphones with Samsung obtaining 43.1% with Nokia at 13.3%. Most recently it was reported that due to Nokia’s efforts with Lumia, WP was now the second biggest OS in India after Android. There’s still a lot of work to do for MS/Nokia in India for Lumia/WP to be firm contender amongst Indian consumers. Source: TimesOfIndia Cheers madusha for the tip!

Leak or Fake: Picture surfaces of a supposed Nokia Lumia 950 – with xenon flash and lossless zooming Posted: 02 Apr 2013 11:04 AM PDT
Above is supposedly a picture of a very rectangular yet to be announced Nokia Lumia 950. It reminds me of some concept images we’ve seen (and that blocky Lumia at the WP8 dev launch). Rubino from WPC says he can’t be sure about the source. This handset is supposed to make some sort of nostalgic trip back to the N95 days. Resolution wise, still the same as the 920, no support yet for 1080p (well done Microsoft! You guys rock at working at speed! Keep doing it some more so we can begin travelling back in time). On the upside, to counter the loss of screen pixel bragging rights, battery life is said to be pretty good. The camera isn’t going to be 41MP But it is said to feature ‘lossless’ zooming, indeed with a sensor bigger than current devices for over sampling and low-light performance. Other bonuses include video stabilisation (what about stills?) and…wait for it, XENON flash. 2GB RAM is included as well as other internals that should help with ‘future proofing’ (though as we know it’s not just hardware you have to contend with regarding MS’ policies for updates.

Instagraph App for WP to Allow Direct Publishing to Instagram?? Posted: 02 Apr 2013 08:33 AM PDT Daniel over at WPC has decided to do a bit of teasing, with the picture above and the caption “anything is possible”. And apparently the app shown above has the ability to publish your filtered goodness to your instagram account! According to some of the chatter instagram have just updated their APIs, which depending on who you believe either now allows or doesn’t allow 3rd party access to their servers. Also here’s a video of the app in action (and it’s looking to be the real deal):
Side Note: Some people have noted that tomorrow would mark exactly one year ago when Instagram was made available for Android… coincidence? Unfortunately the app is nowhere to be found on the interwebs, but it’s likely to be in private beta mode. According to plaffo.com the app does indeed work as described; and will be coming to both WP8 and WP7.8 users:

Windows Phone grows in all markets, big gains at expense of BlackBerry and Symbian (and iOS in US) Posted: 02 Apr 2013 05:09 AM PDT
We heard about this story yesterday but there’s a bit more to it with these tables indicating just how much Windows Phone has improved over this time last year.
It’s great to see WP, and thus Nokia (being the largest of the WP crew) grow. It’s not where we want it to be, but it’s slowly getting there. Is it time to celebrate? No, not yet. But there’s hope, much more so than naysayers would like to portray (especially the ones that love to shout that it’s in decline or not growing at all). When Nokia jumped on the WP bus, they said it was a moving vehicle and not much they could do regarding the WP7.5 products. It wasn’t until WP8 Lumias in November where consumers could see the true Nokia influence, the Nokia stamp with Nokia getting more freedom to apply their innovations within the confines of a speedy, fluid, easy to use reliable OS. There’s a long fight ahead of us but it’s one at least where we’ve got a good chance of winning some battles. The foundation of Asha gets stronger by the day, and Nokia’s fortifying the walls with a strong portfolio of well placed Lumias in various tiers with more still to come. The world right now appears to be only two options for most people; Android or iOS. Nokia and Microsoft has to bring the fight to their competitors with faster, more frequent updates, more requested features, more high profile applications, better hardware, more unique innovation, improved marketing (not simply in amount but in effectiveness). Nokia and MS need to be super agile to catchup, let alone be ahead of this quickly evolving market. What will consumers want next? How can we make consumers want our products more? What can we bring that uniquely makes us more attractive to potential customers? What is relevant to the market now and how can we bring it to consumers now in the time frame where they’ll still care about that? Source: Kantar Cheers Arun for the tip! |
Baconit Prank hits top spot on Reddit Posted: 02 Apr 2013 04:14 AM PDT The WP community on reddit noticed that the Baconit Prank reached the top page on Reddit yesterday. Baconit was one of the first apps we ever featured and it’s now one of the must-have apps for WP. It’s nice seeing it noticed beyond the realms of the WP/Nokia/Lumia world. The prank simulates an error in Windows Phone, initiating a shut down and restart. It was a big enough of a prank that devoted-undercoverererer-of-truth-Rubino at WPC even posted about it as an actual error. A lot of the comments reacting/falling to the prank said they had heart attacks/flipped out/s**t themselves upon seeing their Lumia/WP initiate an error and wipe the memory. Source: WP-Reddit

Nokia Singapore gets the Cyan and Grey Nokia Lumia 920 Posted: 02 Apr 2013 03:16 AM PDT
Nokia Singapore’s Facebook reports that they’ve got the Nokia Lumia 920 in both the rare Cyan and Grey colours. Pretty neat considering that some countries are waiting to get the 920 in any colour. It’s said to retail for 779 SGD, or 413GBP/629USD. Source: Nokia Singapore Cheers jajai for the heads up! |
