Lumia 521 Coming to T-Mobile on April 27th; $149.95 Off Contract

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 09:31 AM PDT

gsmarena_001The Lumia 520′s America cousin, the 521 is set to hit US shores in the next few days; according to an announcement by T-Mobile the phone will be available for purchase online as well as 3rd party retailers and Official Microsoft stores for a dirt cheap $149.95 (Off contract and fully paid).

The Windows Phone 8 smartphone will be bundled with a car charger and screen protector for $149.95 with free shipping and handling and a flex pay option will be available.  Please check local listings for specific air times.

Following the HSN debut, the Nokia Lumia 521 will be available at Microsoft Retail Stores and Walmart on May 11.  The Lumia 521 will be $149 at Microsoft Retail Stores.  At Walmart, the Lumia 521 will be available with the retailer's exclusive T-Mobile no contract $30 per month unlimited Web and text plan.

The 521 is phasing out the Lumia 810 as T-mobile’s Nokia WP8 device (until the next flagship that is); so hopefully the extremely low price-point will help push those sales numbers. In the mean time check out our hands on the 520 from MWC down below:

Subtle 41MP Hint at Nokia Invitation on May 14th Nokia Lumia Event #EOS/PureView? See what happens next

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 09:09 AM PDT

41mpOh Nokia does love their hints.

Remember before that there was supposed to be a rumoured launch of the ‘catwalk’ on May 15th by an anonymous source? This seemed to corroborate with other Nokia related events going on at the time and now there’s pretty much confirmation that something will be announced within days of those dates.

As arts points out, look at the live tiles. 4 messages, 1 missed call. 41? :P See what happens next. SEE. Camera.

see what happens next

Edit (Ali): If we were to read into the text “the lumia story continues” and “what’s next” you’d think the Lumia range is evolving; either in terms of feature (EOS killer camera?), Design (catwalk aluminum) or expanding to new territories (hello tablets!). But the presence of the 41 pushes me towards a camera improvement and the EOS which as we’ve heard will come with a 41 megapixel sensor (also 14 reversed is 41 :P ).

Although I must say when I saw the hidden text saying “what’s next” I instantly thought of a new sort of screen technology, as the blurring reminded me of pentile displays; so perhaps an evolution of Puremotion alongside the new pureview? What do you guys think?

UpToDate Medical App coming soon for Windows Phone

UpToDate is one of the main resources our consultants at Medical School recommends that we use (accessible via the hospital PCs). It allows healthcare staff to do some ‘Evidence Based’ decisions aka a fancy, clinically respected Wikipedia.

Reports are that this will soon be available to Windows Phone. One of the (many :P ) app areas WP is lacking in is Medical, which being in the medical field I notice more than most (This is partly why Manchester University has given the medical students free iPads).

BetaLabs: Nokia Chat for Windows Phone (7/8)

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 01:06 AM PDT

Beta Labs has just released Nokia Chat for Windows Phone (both 7 & 8) powered by Yahoo!. Nokia Chat has been available on S40, Asha and Symbian for some time, and now Nokia’s Lumia devices join the fold.

Currently restricted to users in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland,New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, United Kingdom and the United States. It allows you to not only share messages, but also location info. If you’re using WP8 you get lock screen notifications and voice commands (although I can’t get it to work).

Here’s some info pulled from the beta labs page.

First beta release available (April 25, 2013)

The first beta release of Nokia Chat for Windows Phone is available in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, India, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Nigeria.  We’ll be expanding availability to more countries in the near future.

Our first beta release includes the following features:

Person to Person Messaging: Reach millions of Nokia Chat and Yahoo! Messenger users across different mobile and computer platforms.

Push Notifications and Live Tile Updates: Receive new message notifications, preview new messages, and see how many notifications you've received – even when Nokia Chat isn’t running.

Share a Place: Send information about a restaurant, store, or other point of interest.  If the recipient is also using a Lumia, they’ll see details, directions, and reviews inside the HERE Maps app.

Broadcast Your Location: Optionally include your city or neighborhood in your status message, so your friends and family know when you’re near or faraway.

Find Contacts: Scan your phone’s address book to find friends and family who already use Nokia Chat and Yahoo! Messenger.

Using a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8?

Take advantage of these additional features:

Speak Your Message: Compose a message by pressing speak, and what you say will be translated into text.

Voice Commands: Start Nokia Chat by long-pressing the Windows key and saying “Chat with” and the name of an existing contact: for example, “Chat with John”.

Lock Screen Notifications: See how many Nokia Chat notifications you have on your lock screen.   Start the built-in Settings app and select “lock screen” to begin

Cheers Derrek for the tip!

Windows Phone 8.1 (Blue) Concept; Brings Fully Functional Notificaion Hub and Much More

Posted: 24 Apr 2013 11:22 PM PDT

5-Device-center

We love to look at possible concepts of integrating a fully functional Notification center/Hub into Windows Phone (if only Microsoft would take a hint already); so here’s another one from the folks at 1800pocketpc which looks REALLY well done. The latest concept shows what an overhaul of Windows Phone would like, going much deeper than just adding a notification center, you can now close apps by swiping down in the multitasking view, arrange apps into groups as well as a redesigned start screen that adds a fourth and 5th tile size.

The concept/features look really cool and I’d love to see them integrated into my next Lumia (and the one I already have!) but one feature that needs to be corrected ASAP is the useless search button; either make it customizable to google or make it a universal search; just don’t make us “bing it”.

Check out more features of the concept at the source down below:
