TheVerge: Jolla – what Nokia could have been, what if MeeGo wasn’t abandoned for WP? Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:57 PM PST TheVerge looks at the Jolla phone and reminisces of what could have been for Nokia if they continued the path of MeeGo. Remember Vlad’s opinion on the Nokia N9 was the beginning of the turn around regarding praising Nokia in both Hardware and Software. N9 felt fresh in design and in usability. Whilst Nokia went a different path, some ex-Nokians kept the candle burning and forged a new path inspired by N9/Qt/MeeGo. The first result of that is this device from Jolla. I myself would have preferred Nokia sticking Maemo on their phones. Mmm. N900 slim with 41mp.
Their feedback on the Jolla device isn’t as flattering as the N9 was.
Hardware wise, a good first impression. Blocky utilitarian sandwich design appeals. Since we talk about anything Nokia related and Jolla’s connections are still very strong with Nokia, we’ll share more Jolla news. For just Jolla things, you may like to try, as per suggestion in comments Cheers all for the tip! |
How to: Access Google Play Store from Jolla Phone Posted: 29 Nov 2013 12:26 PM PST Jolla Sailfish has less to worry about regarding ecosystems as Jolla can utilise Android apps without having to rewrite them (e.g. BB10). But how do you get these apps to the Jolla Phone? There are many ways and currently, some instructions floating around the web by a Jolla user says they’ve found a way to access the store directly. Now you do this at your own risk.

Sony Sponsored iSellMobile Awards crowns Nokia Lumia 1020 as Phone of the Year Posted: 29 Nov 2013 03:33 AM PST An interesting result for the Nokia Lumia 1020 which is described as the run away winner of the Phone of The Year by the Sony sponsored iSellMobile Awards (not something I’m familiar with). It beat the Xperia Z1 from Sony, Note III, HTC One and iPhone 5S. Nice job online community for at least raising the profile of the Nokia handset there.
The tablet category couldn’t escape Sony fans though. Cheers Alvester for the tip! |
Video: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Galaxy Note 3 Posted: 29 Nov 2013 03:27 AM PST
Here’s another video comparing the phablets from Nokia and Sammy. The 6″ 1520 goes up against the 5.7″ Note 3. The video (almost 15 minutes and 20 seconds long) compares design, screen, layout of buttons, camera, OS, apps. Despite being on the same processor and the Note 3 having 3GB RAM, they note that the 1520 is more consistent and snappy whilst they see some lag in the Note 3 and there’s sometimes a hitch with performance. I like how in demoing smart scroll with eyes they had to move the Note 3. It’s neat to think about (as well as hover gestures) but at the moment, current implementation leads pretty much every user I’ve encountered to just turn these off. Similar features are said to be worked on (3D touch? Or is that a different implementation). I hope it’s actually a useful feature (like being able to use gloves when it’s cold). Battery life, better than average on both.
Atm, it’s a deeper software experience on the Note 3. It takes a better advantage of that screen space (hence why even after finding it on initial release, I warmed later to the original Note). But you’ll also appreciate the 1520 experience, which in user reviews seem really pleased so far. Price wise, $100 on contract really surprises. An impressive price point considering the features, and performance. The $300 for the Note 3 is apparently greatly out of proportion. What we’d like to see in future:

Nokia “Guru” Headset to Launch Mid December; Official Name “BH-121 Touch” Posted: 28 Nov 2013 11:37 PM PST A while back we heard rumors of an upcoming Nokia device/accessory being called the “Nokia Guru”. Now we can confirm that the device will launch under the name “BH-121 Touch”; although the touch part of the name refers to the fact that the device has NFC on board for quick pairing. The device is somewhat a successor to the BH -221 that was launched back at MWC 2012. The other piece of information we can add to this is that the launch date is scheduled for mid-December at the moment (week 50); so it should make it out before the holidays. However we’ve heard that the device is slightly different from the renders @evleaks previously shared (as seen above); but we don’t have any exact info on what’s changed. Now if only the Nokia treasure tag would become official…
