6snap snapchat client gets released for Windows Phone

After this mornings excitement with Instagram being released, Rudy Huyn, the developer of 6tag, took the wraps off 6snap and announced its public availability.

For those who don’t know what snapchat is, it is a photo and video messaging app, that has self destructing messages. What the user can do is specify the time length that the recipient can see the image for (1-10 secs) and after they view it once, it deletes itself. Perfect for those who send the cheeky snap and don’t want the repercussions. (My friends tend to send me drunk selfies :p ) On Android and iOS, if you screenshot a friends photo, they get notified. However, with WP, when you’re holding the screen to view the picture, you cannot screenshot.

The app is free, with ads, and has an in-app purchase to remove them if you wish.

Earlier this week, Google published an update to its Google app for Windows Phone. Now they’ve shared Waze for WP too as tweeted by Belfiore.

He also RT’d Rudy’s tweet about his snapchat app.

Belfiore notes:

We’re all gonna look back on the end of 2014 as the ending of the app-gap for Windows Phone. The 3rd ecosystem is decidedly here!

Thanks Mikke for the tip

Edit (Michael): Seeing as Jay beat me to it by a few minutes, I figured I would merge my post with is, save doubling up.

Today, Instagram finally released their Windows Phone app, albeit in Beta form. The app is decent, though not as feature packed as 6tag (or the official clients on Android & iOS for that matter). Let’s take a look!

First up is the standard feed screen where you’ll see all the pictures from those you follow.

instagram_wp_1

When a photo receives comments, they’re all displayed here in chronological order.

instagram_wp_8

The explore page is your go-to place for discovering new content. Not only is it good for showing you whats popular, but it allows you to search for specific content, such as the Lumia 1020, or Soccer, or Formula 1, etc. This is why when you use #hashtags in your posts you’ll tend to find more likes/comments come your way – new followers too! (Remember: don’t spam the caption with #hashtags, nobody wants that in their feed. Do it in the first comment, it works the same way and won’t annoy anyone.)

If you’re on the 92x/1020/1520, use the #pureview tag ;)

instagram_wp_2

Like any good social network, you have your notifications. You can also switch over and get  a list of what your friends have recently liked or commented on, as well as people they’ve recently followed. Again, great for finding new content.

instagram_wp_3

Your profile page, complete with bio, image, follower/following count and your posts.

instagram_wp_4

Now, here is where Instagram Beta on WP differs from the others. Currently, you cannot upload video to the service, and the capture UI is very different also. When you click the capture icon, you get shown this image picker.

instagram_wp_5

You then select the image you want (or hit the camera icon and take an image from the app) and scale/crop it how you see fit. (Tip: When you use Nokia Camera to take the picture, go into settings and set up a square framing – this will help you determine how to take the best shot for instagram).

instagram_wp_5

This is where Instagram’s magic happens, adding all the filters and editing options until your heart’s content!

instagram_wp_6

When you’re done “improving” your photo, you’re shown the share page. This is fairly self explanatory.

instagram_wp_7

If you’re like me and love travelling, make sure you tag the places the photo was taken. There is a cool feature called photo map that will show you the places the images were taken on a map of the world. (Sadly, not yet implemented).

So that’s just a quick look at Instagram Beta on Windows Phone. Don’t forget, you can follow the team on instagram by following

Nokia Music Rebranded to Nokia MixRadio; Completely Redesigned With Great New Features

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 07:25 AM PST

DSC04440Nokia Music, has been Nokia’s exclusive music service that in some aspects rivals iTunes and the other big guns out there. It first grew in popularity a couple years back when Nokia started their “comes with music” program, which enabled users to download an unlimited number of tracks free of charge, with purchase of certain devices. When the Lumia lineup was announced MixRadio was released, with great features such as unlimited streaming and offline mixes.

DSC04437

Now Nokia Music has evolved into “Nokia MixRadio” bringing the same great features as well as “Play Me”, that acts similar to Mix radio, but is a constant stream that learns what to play next depending on whether you chose to “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” the currently playing song. Of course you can still enjoy all the other features of Nokia music, such as pre-made mixes and offline mixes.

Introducing the next generation of Nokia Music, Nokia MixRadio, bringing you free, personalized music with no advertising. Listen to the music you want to hear with Play Me, a constant stream of music created just for you. Use Thumbs up and Thumbs down to tell us what you like so that your mix gets better and better every time you play. It's like having your own personal radio station. Also includes the features you know and love – my music, mp3 store, create a mix, gigs and offline playback – so that you can store your favorite mixes on your phone and enjoy anywhere, even without a connection. (Feature availability varies by country, which is determined from your SIM). New features in this version: – Play Me is a personalized mix inspired by your unique music profile. – Thumbs up / Thumbs down to help refine your music profile. – Share mixes with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or by email and SMS. – New name and a new look to make it even easier to use. – Bug fixes. Exclusively for Nokia Lumia

Enter to Trial a Lumia 1520 and Capture the Story of a Friend/Relative (Ages 70-100)

Posted: 20 Nov 2013 06:48 AM PST

nokia_lumia_1520_yellow-tall1

Last week we posted about an interesting program by Nokia Connects, where they were  trialing away 100 Nokia Lumia 1520′s, to capture the stories of 100 people from ages (1-100). Now most of these spots have obviously been snapped up quite quickly, but there’s still a chance for you to get a 1520 for yourself, provided you can share the stories of an elderly ages 70-100 with it.

Essentially we are giving the trial to the person who nominates their older relative/friend/neighbor etc, in order for them to capture the story of the elder. So we don’t actually need sign-up from 70-100 year olds, just people who are prepared to get involved with their elders in the project.

So if your grandparents are coming to visit, or you’re planning on helping your next door neighbor clean out her garage, why not take an amazing 20Mp Lumia 1520 to help share their story? Send our email and details through the link below!

Go Nokia! In the skies on a Jet with Nokia Lumia 1520, Video and OIS impresses Ars Technica

Ars Technica has a quick hands on preview of the Nokia Lumia 1520, 13,000 feet up in a jet and they’re quite impressed with how it’s performing. Whilst they say it’s large, it’s not obscenely large and can (just) about fit in their pocket.

Video wise, the OIS handles things beautifully.

Cheers Carlson and Alvester for the tip!
