Steve Jobs tried to get Nokia’s Anssi Vanjoki to go to Apple when Elop became Nokia CEO? Posted: 11 Nov 2013 10:35 AM PST Interesting news from iltalehti.fi reporting on suomenkuvalehti.fi which Vanjoki apparently confirmed was true. When Nokia appointed Stephen Elop instead of Anssi Vanjoki to become CEO, Steve Jobs had supposedly contacted Vanjoki wanting him to go work at Apple. Whilst Vanjoki did leave Nokia, he didn’t go to Apple. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in Apple but it was said that Apple wouldn’t have suited his personality. The exact position was not mentioned. Perhaps that’s why Vanjoki declined the offer? Cheers Random Random for the heads up |
Nokia’s HERE Maps to power Tizen Posted: 11 Nov 2013 10:24 AM PST Remember Tizen? Nokia and Intel merged Maemo and Moblin to create MeeGo. When MeeGo got abandoned, Intel got working with Samsung, kinda merging Bada with MeeGo to make Tizen. Though technically there isn’t anything MeeGo in Tizen (unlike perhaps, Sailfish). The purpose of Tizen is to give Samsung the legs to walk away from big old Google. Samsung’s already quite big enough, and will get even larger, so it makes sense that they seek to be fully independent. Another step towards moving away from google is switching mapping services. HERE Maps will be powering Tizen. Imagine if Samsung suddenly switched all their Galaxy line to Tizen? The upside to Android is that it’s now quite mature and has apps. The latter would probably the deciding factor for buyers (what if Tizen could run Android apps?). Other than that, the Samsung/Galaxy brand are more than enough to sway a consumer versus the Moto/LG/HTC/Sony handsets. Then all of that powered by HERE Maps. Cheers Edi for the tip!

Flat vs flat: WP8 vs iOS7 app design Posted: 11 Nov 2013 10:08 AM PST Up until iOS 7, Apple’s mobile OS was focused on these skeuomorphic designs as opposed to the WP flat approach. Then suddenly all came a “new” and “innovative” way as iOS7 invents the flat approach. Long Zeng compares a selection of popular apps on both platforms. With developers updating to iOS7 styling, some of these apps are looking a lot more flat too. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20131109/flat-vs-flat-a-comparison-of-windows-phone-and-ios-7-app-designs/ Via Reddit I want a scrollbar dammit! I think WP8 spotify needs tweaking. Have the side tab approach like the facebook app. Also it needs the rest of the spotify features. Generally spotify sucks on all my devices. iOS/Android/Mac OS/Windows/WP but they have got me trapped with my playlists. But the WP8 client needs some updating again please. |
Nokia Lumia 920 vs Nexus 5 – OIS test Posted: 11 Nov 2013 09:56 AM PST Last year’s WP flagship goes up against this year’s Nexus, the Nexus 5. Whilst the benchmark has been raised by Nokia with the Nokia Lumia 1020 (or 808 what have you) it’s great to see that everyone else is also trying to get better and better imaging capabilities too (no point being the best at things no one cares about). AAWP have put the 920 against the Nexus 5 and find the test too close to call.
Cheers Alvester for the tip. |
Spotted: Nokia Lumia 920 in Lowe’s Fridge commercial Posted: 11 Nov 2013 09:45 AM PST It’s not that clear in this blurry copy but the eagle eyed amongst you will see that a Nokia Lumia 920 features here in Lowe’s advert for their refrigerators.
Cheers Simo for the tip! |
Social Scene for WP8 Gets Updated Posted: 11 Nov 2013 02:02 AM PST Social Scene for WP8 has just received an update to 1.0.1.5. The update is minor, but brings a much awaited feature; A notification section. Changes in 1.0.1.5
Jason, the dev of the app, is currently in the process of implementing a “live scene feed” and also “user to user messaging”. The improvements really seem to increase its potential to become a new social network. Apparently, there have been 6000 downloads and 900+ users in 2 weeks. Looking forward to seeing how far the app progresses. What are you waiting for? Download Social Scene for FREE and check it out!
