With news that smartphone sales are growing into the larger screen territory, finally we have a WP offering larger than 5″. With the 6″ Nokia Lumia 1520, Nokia makes a huge leap in display size (with 4.65 the previous largest lumia in the 625, and 1.2″ larger than the ATIV S). You can pick one up for $199 on contract, or $549 off contract. Release date is 9 days away. 11.15.2013

Windows Phone grows 185%, second in 19 countries; Android iOS flat Posted: 06 Nov 2013 12:24 AM PST TheNexWeb reports from Canalys‘ data that WP is second in 19 countries. iOS and Android stay flat. WP’s growth of course attributed again to Nokia. Devices with screens over 5″ are making up even more of the quarter billion smartphone sales (approx 22% of shipments!). Similarly, IDC notes that in Russia, WP is ahead of iOS too. But what everyone wishes is that Nokia keep up and perhaps even increase this momentum further.

Microsoft narrows down CEO shortlist; Stephen Elop still in the running Posted: 06 Nov 2013 12:09 AM PST
Microsoft are keen to get a new CEO by the end of the year. Reuters reports that the shortlist has been narrowed further with the heads of Ford, Skype, Azure and Stephen Elop from Nokia/MS still in the mix. The original list of potentials apparently included as much as 40 names. Interestingly, some investors are said to be interested in Bill Gates stepping down as chairman as he ‘stands in the way’ of Microsoft’s radical reform. Gates is focused on his philanthropy work and those close to him say he’s not going back to a CEO position any time soon. Although Elop will be at Microsoft once the Nokia deal is done, and that he was once VP at MS, he is still seen as an external candidate until then.
Two internal candidates, from Skype and Azure have been gaining prominence. Source: Reuters Cheers Alvester for the tip! |
