Nokia Lumia 1520 Tentatively Priced at AUD$899 for Harvey Norman

Posted: 14 Nov 2013 06:47 PM PST

1520 2

Nokia’s latest flagship, the Lumia 1520, is set to launch in the USA as of next week. Thanks to a tip off, we have reason to believe Australia can’t be too far behind.

A major retailer down under, Harvey Norman, is apparently listing a price of AUD$899 on its internal system. These prices are obviously open to fluctuation, and they often set the initial price higher due to pre-orders so they don’t make a mistake (like they have in the past, undercutting RRP by $100+).

Given the Lumia 1020 is currently on sale by Harvey Norman for $833 – $899 seems fairly reasonable for the Lumia 1520. Hopefully we have some official pricing and availability news in the coming days. Sadly I’m still locked into my contract for another 12 months so I’ll most likely have to give this a miss.

Facebook Login Via Official App Now Possible in WP8

According to a recent post on the Windows Blog, developers can now utilize the official Facebook app to bypass browser log in redirects when trying to connect to facebook. For example, if an app has the option to share something with a friend via Facebook, the app can log-in through the Facebook beta app and bypass the need to redirect you to a browser log-in.

facebook first step

This is especially useful for games and other interactive apps that connect to your social network; on the other hand Windows Phone already has Facebook integrated into the hub, and allows sharing of specific items through the hub directly; but of course that won’t always cut it.

Nokia “GoldFinger” and “MoneyPenny” to be First Nokia WP 8.1/Blue Devices + “3D Touch”?

Posted: 14 Nov 2013 06:50 AM PST

goldfinger-wallpaper_294513_32943According to @evleaks, the ever reliable source on anything in the pipelines (Nokia or not), two of the devices he previously mentioned “goldfinger” and “moneypenny” could be Nokia’s first WP 8.1/Blue devices. Blue update is set to be the large overhaul for WP bringing a number of features, including possibly a notification center, quick toggles and separate volume controls; but none of these have been confirmed yet.

If Nokia follow their naming scheme, these devices should be named XX30, as the tens digit represents the Windows Phone version number. We’re sure to see a lot more of these leaks in the future, but hopefully Blue isn’t too far off.

Update:
According to the Verge, Nokia’s first WP 8.1 devices may debut Nokia’s “3D Touch” a technology that basically enables touch gestures outside the touch screen/glass. These features may use special hardware sensors to detect movements on or around the phone, such as hover gestures ( a feature present in the GS4) and swipes on the side or back of the phone.

Earlier this month, the Philippines was struck by the recent tragedy of Typhoon Haiyan or Yolanda as it is known locally. Thousands of lives were lost, millions left homeless and vast amounts of critical infrastructure destroyed. Nokia notes that they have over 870 staff (NSN/HERE/Nokia) in the Philippines, all of whom were fortunate enough to emerge safely.

Nokia has made a donation in excess of over 250,000 EUR to the local Red Cross and Red Crescent rescue operations as well was to Oxfam for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Nokia has also donated more than 1000 mobile phones to support local communication and recovery efforts.  Some of these handsets will be used as a makeshift radio station to assist in connecting people with their loved ones and facilitate various rescue operations.

Employees in Finland and around the world are also helping to raise funds through the Finnish Red Cross.

Nokia have shared this donation link:

Nokia’s Possible Next Steps In Imaging

At Slush yesterday, there were talks about Nokia’s Imaging capabilities. With the acquisitions we have seen recently, many of us have wondered where will they go from here. Posted during Nokia World, a few questions that Nokia highlighted the acquisitions help answer are:

Can we make a smartphone camera with better resolution than the human eye?
InVisage, an NGP portfolio company based in California, has developed a new image sensing technology based on custom designed nanomaterial that has the potential to deliver image sensors with hundreds of millions of pixels resolution. Depending on how you calculate this is approaching the resolution of a human eye.

Can we make a smartphone that sees at night?
Pelican Imaging achieves this by combining normal image sensing with infrared sensing enable "night vision" cameras in the form of a smartphone.

Can we make a smartphone that peeks around objects and people?
Pelican Imaging technology, together with optical systems from Singapore based Heptagon, provide stereoscopic information to the image capture as a first step to "seeing around objects". The technology also allows post capture refocusing of people or objects in the image. Or combined with the right software people can effectively be "erased" and the background re-created, "seeing" through people!

Can we automatically create information about content in an image?
Images are becoming "smarter". More and more information will be stored with images, not only time & date and 3D information but also location and other data that can be appended to the image such as weather, people in the photo and much more. Luminate is working on making all images in the world interactive by categorizing and cataloguing the information in the image. Of course, the information contained in these new image and video types is so rich that new file formats and standards will have to be designed, effectively making mpeg and jpeg formats obsolete. This would allow information to flow freely across platforms and on social networks.

Can we make a smartphone flash that just works?
We all know how difficult it is to shoot flash pictures; too light, too dark or red eyes. Heptagon is working on a multi color directional flash that can balance color of light and direction of light depending of the scene that is shot.

If you look into this, you could say that Nokia’s new wave of imaging will include elements from everything here. If it turns out to be the case, I’ll be super excited!

Jolla To Take Stage at Slush 2013 – Streams Available

Posted: 14 Nov 2013 12:58 AM PST

jolla-devices

Starting in just over an hour, Jolla will take the stage not once, but twice – to give talks at Slush 2013. 12 months ago – Jolla took to the same stage to give us the first look at Sailfish and outline their plans for the OS.

If you’re interested in the announcement (I know I am), the first talk will be at 12:20 (Finland time) on the Blue Stage and the second at 13:20 (Finland Time) on the Yellow Stage.

I have a feeling we will see the finished build of Sailfish and get some info on device release.
