The Lumia That Never Was; The Lumia 719C

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 12:48 PM PST

BYhqzVaCAAAYgauEarlier today @evleaks tweeted out about the “Lumia 719C” with the images above and the caption “The long-lost Nokia Lumia 719C”.  The 719C appears to be a mid range phone coming between the Lumia 710 and the 800 (as the name would suggest), it has a similar build to the 710, with the same physical set of WP keys (something no WP8 Lumia has) and a similar plastic body with removable back covers. The 719C looks a lot like a mix between the Lumia 610 (which I had blessedly forgotten existed for a while) and the 710; however it does remind me of the first Nokia Windows Phone concepts and mock-ups we saw as well:

From the naming it’s probably safe to assume that the 719c was headed to China, to help give more options for users there; as the original Lumias were said to be a huge hit in the country, but alas that obviously never happened. Regardless it’s still nice to see some of the phone’s Nokia had in their pipelines once upon a time.

Elop Could Sell Off Xbox and Kill Bing if He Becomes Microsoft’s CEO

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 08:54 AM PST

DSC02029According to a report by Bloomberg, should Elop make CEO of Microsoft (as he is currently in the shortlist for the running); he could possibly aim to sell off the Xbox division, and kill Bing search. All in the hopes of helping Microsoft get back on track, as he considers Bing and Xbox a distraction. Another radical decision that could come of this is the possibility of changing how Office products are distributed; making them available to other OSes and competitors, rather than being a main selling point of Windows.

It seems Elop will make ripples where ever he goes, but for now this is all speculation; as he hasn’t even been officially named a candidate for CEO yet.

Nokia Connects are hosting an amazing new project with the help of the Lumia 1520 and 100 lucky persons from the community. Nokia wants to hear the stories of a 100 different people at different ages from 1 to 100; and they want you to use a Lumia 1520 to help tell that story (don’t forget along with the 1520 will come the Storyteller app as well).

To read more about the project and apply to be part of this story at the link below:

(note: the 1520′s will be supplied as a one month trial through Nokia Connects).

Readit: The Coolest Reddit App Out There

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 08:25 AM PST

DSC04386For Reddit on Windows Phone baconit has always been my go to app, but now there’s a new contender for that spot on my home-screen; the newest come to the Reddit app family, readit. The app has a nice design with large fonts and one of my favorite features; very large image previews of stories.

DSC04385

The app is super simple to use and very clean, with no extra cluttering; and most importantly it loads .gifs rapidly. Similar to other apps out there you can also select a subreddit to set your lockscreen for you (default is set to earthporn, which is a great one).

You can grab Readit for $1.99 from the store at the link below, or trial it first:

Guardian and Dan Rubin crown Nokia Lumia 1020 in camera test against S4 Zoom, iPhone 5S and Z1. 1020 camera excels over iPhone

Quite a favourable review of the Nokia Lumia 1020. Great dynamic range, punchy colours, easy to take sharp pictures on zoom (in comparison, the Z1 which attempts to do zooming from pixels apparently produces pictures you wouldn’t want even if it was from 1999. Burn). Immediately Dan Rubin of the Photographic Journal notes that he doesn’t like the bulk of the S4 Zoom, seeming more camera with phone attached versus the other three. Oddly, low light is given to to the S4 zoom in this instance though other reviews have given it to the 1020.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/video/2013/nov/07/smartphone-cameras-reviewed-photography-video

In conclusion: The samsung is big and clunky you feel it in your pocket, but has a really good zoom.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is praised for detail, great optical image stabilisation both helping in the zoom and punchy colours. The iPhone 5S gets a pat on the pack for being on iOS as there’s no compelling enough reason for Dan to switch to another platform. The S4 Zoom The Sony Xperia Z1 is ‘just bigger’ and doesn’t give enough of a reason to stand out from the crowd as a camera phone.

Out of the three that isn’t the iPhone…the Nokia is really the fun one to use.

Ooh, I thought he might have gone for the iPhone or S4. :D

But he opts for the 1020!

That’s the one Dan keeps wanting to pull out and shoot with rather than feeling he has to test it :D . There’s something about it, the industrial design, the quality of the picture it takes and how easy it is to use the entire phone and camera software. There’s some ways where that as a camera it excels over the iPhone. (You may think that it’s obvious since we’ve previously shown several posts that the 1020 excels over the 5s in the camera department but there was one site recently that tried to show otherwise. I forget as I was on the shuttle at the time when I read it).

Cheers crisscross for the tip!

Lumia 1520 Pre-Orders Open now; $199 On Contract; Delivery Nov 22nd – Free Flip Cover, App Vouchers and More

Posted: 08 Nov 2013 12:14 AM PST

1520 2Yesterday we reported that the Lumia 1520 might go on sale Nov. 22nd alongside the Xbox one; it seems the rumors were right about that. Today Nokia posted about the 1520 Pre-orders opening in At&t stores and Microsoft stores with both offering different pre-order incentives. The Microsoft store pre-order deal looks sweeter, with $70 worth of app vouchers, the 1520 flip case and Halo spartan assault (but that’s just my opinion).

  • AT&T is offering a $20 app voucher, a free copy of Halo: Spartan Assault, and 50 GB of free cloud storage on AT&T Locker to customers who buy and activate the phone (the fine print).
  • The Microsoft Store, meanwhile, is enticing buyers with $70 worth of app vouchers and free copy of Halo: Spartan Assault. Preorder customers also get a flip cover worth $40 (the fine print).

Microsoft store link still isn’t up.

MNB RG: Symbian Developer Discs of the past

Janne resent these pictures to us as I missed the message the first time around (many thanks for doing that. I often only get to the most recent of things as I forget items on my mental to do list). Anyway these are some pictures of the developer discs from Symbian devices few might recognise.

_____

I was going through some old archives of mine and came across a bunch of developer discs from the early days of Symbian at Nokia. Some us frequenting MNB were in on the Symbian train from the beginning, before even the first Nokia Symbian devices were out – this is the stuff that was used to develop applications for Nokia 9210 Communicator and Nokia 7650, the first Nokia Symbians, back in 2001-2002. There were a few different versions and also a few other Nokia 9210 Communicator related discs in the pile. I had forgotten all about these. :)

Star Wars: Tiny Death Star; Tiny Towers Spin-Off Comes to WP8

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 11:48 PM PST

DSC04383

Tiny Towers is a classic popular 8-bit game where players manage an apartment complex/building, making new floors and entertainment  centers to attract guests. Disney have just released “Tiny Death-star” which is a spinoff of the game in a star-wars like manner:

From Disney Mobile, in partnership with LucasArts and Nimblebit, the makers of Tiny Tower, comes an all-new mobile game about everyone's favorite space station, STAR WARS™: TINY DEATH STAR! Amidst a civil war in a galaxy far, far away, the Emperor is building a Death Star level by level, and he needs your help. Intergalactic war is expensive, and space stations are, too. Do you have any idea how much it costs to build one the size of a moon?

DSC04377

Although the original Tiny Towers isn’t available on WP, this new spin off is available today; the same day of the iOS and Android launch of the game, pretty cool. It seems Disney have an affinity for WP, bringing their games almost directly to the platform, and sometimes before Android.

Mistake on Amazon gets Nokia Lumia 1020 shipped for $199 contract free!

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 11:39 PM PST

amazon us

A mistake on Amazon has meant that the Nokia Lumia 1020 has been shipping to customers for $199 instead of the full $649.99

That has since been remedied. Some thought that Amazon has cancelled their order due to the mistake but shipment confirmations (hopefully contract free/unlocked) have been sent out as confirmed on Reddit.

The Official AT&T page has the 1020 for up to $799 off contract.

Nokia and Grumpy Cat on favourite Lumia 1520 colours

Posted: 07 Nov 2013 11:30 PM PST

grumpy cat

Nokia’s US facebook page asked which Nokia Lumia 1520 colours was prefered. Yellow undoubtedly came on top, swiftly followed by red, black and then white.

For those wanting cyan, Nokia’s completely aware of the missing colour option and has used Grumpy Cat to illustrate that opinion.

Could you imagine an iconic huge 6″ screened cyan Lumia?
