MNB Reader Generated: Nokia planning “bounceback”, “new weapons”

nokia logoJanne’s latest piece looks again at Nokia’s potential come back to the consumer market. Something some thought would be wishful thinking what with the sale of D&S. But some recent news from key Nokians suggest there may be Nokia branded consumer things in the future.

Cheers Janne!

_______

In continuing on the theme I’ve posted on previously, the post-D&S sale Nokia (http://mynokiablog.com/2013/10/25/mnb-rg-what-will-the-post-ds-sale-nokia-look-like/), here is a bit more from two links tipped by myself, prashant and Jiipee yesterday. I thought I’d combine these into some sort of coherent post. What will Nokia do, once the mobile phones side of thing is sold off to Microsoft in Q1?

Well, we know Nokia is re-grouping into its Karaportti campus in Espoo, Finland, where NSN is already headquartered (http://mynokiablog.com/2013/11/21/nokia-house-becomes-microsoft-house/). Karaportti campus is home of a few new office buildings, Karaportti Midpoint – the new Nokia HQ – and the NSN HQ. These are much newer buildings than the Nokia House was, by the way, although the in-land Karaportti location is not as glamorous as the seaside Nokia House. Karaportti campus itself, though, is quite old and used to house, I believe, an NSN factory at one point and the buildings have been renovated into new uses of Nokia and NSN. It is a sprawling area of many, many Nokia and NSN office buildings and is actually rated as an area of special national significance – the Finnish army regularly practices the defense of the area, like they practice the defense of TV stations for example, so don’t get spooked if a tank blocks your way to the new Nokia HQ.

Here are the recent articles tipped:

Nokia, Once The World’s Biggest Mobile-Phone Maker, Is Planning The Next Bounceback
http://www.businessinsider.com/nokia-once-the-worlds-biggest-mobile-phone-maker-is-planning-the-next-bounceback-2013-11

Tässä ovat Nokian uudet aseet – katso!
http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288624188915.html

The English story speaks for itself, for the Finnish one I’ll quote Jiipee:

  • Nokia is now free from the device and ecosystem shackles and can offer their tech to anyone interested. Looking for new ways to introduce innovation to market
  • Nokia's future is to become technology company, whose core is research. Nokia is about to use half of the cash gained from NMP sales to research. (I wonder, if he can say that now, when the new strategy is not public)
  • Nokia will continue to research mobile phone tech and may license it to others, not only phone manufacturers. They may also manufacture/design some devices themselves or only license.
  • Then there are some (lame) examples of tech Nokia has been working on.

Jiipee’s personal note:

They are now talking how they are preparing for the "programmed" world. Ollila et al have said that Nokia didn’t have enough sw competence. How are they going to compete in the new programmed world, when they've closed down their sw operations?

Janne’s personal note:

An interesting note in the article was that Nokia was now looking at being able to take advantage of their research better, when they wouldn't be constrained by trying to fit them into phones.

Comment system issues – Apologies for the inconvenience

Hello guys. Thank you so much for your patience in sticking with the issues the site has been having, particularly those who are persistent in attempting to share their comments/tips with us despite the horrendous comment system.

Every attempt at fixing it hasn’t worked so far and unfortunately due to uni getting super busy, I haven’t had much time to fix them properly.

The interaction between our readers is very important to us. A lot of the time, I get much more from the comment I’m reading from you guys than the post and sources itself.

We stuck with the default wordpress system as it worked best for us regarding: Spam control, tip messages, folks on mobile browsers having an easier time with wordpress comments (vs disqus) filtering inappropriate words. But it might be time to discuss the use of disqus again.

If your comments aren’t appearing they aren’t because of censorship. They are more likely due to:

  • WordPress error
  • Use of profanity (you can bypass them by using “***”)
  • More than 4 links
  • Spam phrases
  • overzealous spam

Feel free to test the comment box below. If that still doesn’t work, you can get in touch to jay@mynokiablog.com just so I know it’s still not working.

Apologies for the inconvenience. It’s hard enough having the situation Nokia’s going through without the site itself being a pain to use. And because of that, thank you so much for those that persisted with us.

There’s a promo below for the 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020. There’s nothing new or compelling about the ad itself though it does demonstrate the zoom AFTER shooting ok.

At the end there appears to be a promo that if you buy either a 1020/1520, you can get a Lumia tablet for $200. Though each device apparently needs a 2 year contract :/.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas – coming to WP as well as IOS, Android

This sneaked into my twitter feed somehow (not RTd as far as I know and not following rockstar) but they just announced that Grand Theft Auto is coming to a select number of Mobile Platforms.

I wasn’t expecting WP to be mentioned, and it’s not. But that’s probably because there’s a typo as they mention Windows Mobile.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for mobile also comes equipped with full controller support, including Made for iOS controller capability on iOS7. It will be available for select iOS, Android, Amazon Kindle and Windows Mobile devices. Stay tuned for more details in the weeks ahead.

Hurrah? :)

The 4.7″ 4G Nokia Lumia 625 is available for just £129.95! You would need to top up £15 but that’s credit that goes back for your use. At the till, it’ll be 144.95.

If CPW continues the trend, their handsets tend to be unlocked – something you’d usually pay extra for.

I think I missed this last week due to exams so here is a quick look at the internals of the Nokia Lumia 2520.

Well, the case anyway. There’s not much more to it.
