LeakyLeak: “Nokia Normandy is the missing link” says @evleaks

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 11:42 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-11-12 at 19.38.15On Sunday, we heard from evleaks about some new Nokia product names. There seemed to be a 007 theme what with Goldfinger, Moneypenny and even perhaps Phantom. We previously thought the Normandy connection maybe that Casino Royale was inspired by a location in Deauville, Normandy, where writer Ian Flemming had played.

The latest tweet from Evan says “Nokia Normany is the missing link”.

We all like a puzzle. What do you think it suggests?

App Demo: Official Vine Client for Windows Phone

Posted: 12 Nov 2013 09:18 AM PST

DSC04395Earlier we mentioned that the Official Vine app was landing in the Windows Phone store today, well good news; it’s already here! And below is our video demo of the app!

So far in my short testing of the app it’s been pretty cool, although I’d prefer for it to have a more visible toggle option when choosing the filming settings. Also a video tutorial when the app is first installed would be nice, but then again 6tag and 6sec have spoiled me.

Grab the app from the store link below:

Just some Nokia Support Videos showing tutorials on the tablet Nokia Lumia 2520.

Since I haven’t used a W8 tablet before and not Nokia’s one, I’ve found these videos quite useful to watch – not just for learning  but also just the anticipation of getting around to eventually trying one.

The concept of Nokia’s directional recording explained, Lumia 1520 and quad microphones

The Nokia Lumia 1520 has four microphones which it uses for something called “directional recording”. There’s a post over at NokConv as well as a brief white paper that explains this concept.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/11/11/new-direction-audio-recording-lumia-1520/

http://i.nokia.com/blob/view/-/3160090/data/1/-/High-quality-audio-recording-in-Nokia-Lumia-smartphones.pdf

The 808 and 1020 capture stereo audio but omnidirectional.

The 1520 uses two second generation HAAC rich recording microphones in pairs for each audio channel. The processing combined with suitable acoustic implementation of the microphones in pairs creates a directional cardioid type stereo recording pattern. This means the 1520 records sounds in front of the camera and attenuates sound from other directions, with the sound in front being up to twice as loud as the back.

Advantages?

  • Improved clarity from audio in front
  • Improved accuracy and resolution from stereo image
  • Improved localisation of sound around the camera and creating a greater sense of depth and immersiveness
  • Direction free, full bandwidth stereo recording.

Quite nicely however, Nokia gives you the option to switch between omnidirectional and directional as there may be situations which omnidirectional is preferable too.

The quad microphones also allow for even better noise reduction too.

This should really have a catchy marketable name. Include something that emphasises the potential 3D surround sounding recording.

Cheers all for the tip!
