Nokia Officially 4th Largest Smartphone Brand in US, Ahead of HTC, Motorola and Blackberry

Posted: 01 Nov 2013 10:47 AM PDT

Lumia FamilyThe big news in Nokia’s Q3 earnings reports wasn’t just the record number of Lumias shipped; but instead the increased foothold Nokia managed to gain in the US. Now it seems that Nokia has officially achieved the 4th place spot in the US of A in terms of smartphone sales, with 4.1% of the smartphone market.

Admittedly that’s still miles behind Apple and Samsung (33.7% and 33.6% respectively), but it’s nice to see some improvement. It’s also interesting to see how badly HTC are doing in the US given how much they’re trying with Android and int run giving WP the cold shoulder, perhaps the future is in WP?

Whilst Finland usually has to wait significantly longer to get their own flagship Nokia devices, the wait isn’t too long for the gigantic Nokia Lumia 1520, 2520 and the petite Asha 503. All said to be due on the 4th of December 2013 by NokConv Finland.

Video: Impressive app, “Smart Resize” – Winner of the Nokia Capture app competition

Here’s a Nokia Promo for an app called Smart Resize which I thought was actually pretty cool. I thought it was going to crop intelligently like squares and rectangles but what it does is allow you to take a picture, keep the important subject in that picture (or remove an unsightly object) whilst you shrink the rest of the image around it. Best to watch the video rather than my explanation.

I just tried it and I’m really impressed. :)

A couple of sources have been looking at the smartphone numbers and shows that WP is indeed making some great progress. ABI Research shows WP growing 165% year on year thanks to Nokia which is now making 95% of all WP devices shipped.

Strategy Analytics points out that for the first time, there has been over 10M WP shipped in one quarter. doubling the marketshare from 2 to 4% year on year. According to their findings, this shows a 178% growth year on year making it the world’s fastest major smartphone OS. This growth is attributed to Nokia’s steadily improving Lumia portfolio across Europe, Asia and America.

Lars, a Windows Phone dev who has been involved in several Hackathons, and has a prominent name in the dev community, is exemplifying the community’s values. He has decided to take the time out of his busy schedule, to teach others how to create some outstanding apps. Take a look to see what he is doing for the dev community.

In between travelling to Sweden to participate in an exclusive Hackathon hosted by Nokia, co-organising the popular DDD Melbourne conference, and of course designing innovative custom software solutions for the clients of Kiandra IT, Lars has also been developing courses for Pluralsight.

Pluralsight is an extremely popular online training site for the dev community. From Australia to America, Pluralsight training videos have helped developers around the world create amazing software.

Lars' first course Building Windows Phone Apps that Stand Out  is now live, and you can get a sample of it at his blog.

The course will show students how to use some of the best features of the Windows Phone platform to make their apps get noticed.

Producing a Windows Phone app is relatively straight forward. Creating a compelling app that stands out from the crowd and provides real value is much harder.

Lars will highlight some of the key features devs can use to differentiate their Windows Phone app as well as demonstrate how to use live tiles, push notifications, in-app purchases and many more features that can bring real competitive advantage.

We're looking forward to seeing his first course, and are eagerly awaiting the next one…rumour has it, it will be on testing and error logging for Windows Phone…
