Nokia Australia Officially Announces Lumia 1520 – Coming Dec 11; RRP $899 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:31 PM PST We knew it was only a matter of time until Nokia Australia made the Lumia 1520′s availability official, and it has just happened. Moments ago, they announced that the Lumia 1520 will be hitting Australian shelves from Dec 11. The RRP is set at $899, and will launch exclusively via retailer Harvey Norman (who we posted over the weekend will carry it for $894). The Lumia 1520 will be ranged in Black, White and Yellow – with Yellow and Black protective covers sold separately for $34.95. Don’t forget, you can also get a $20 app voucher via redemption. Will be interesting to see carrier availability announced, if it does, as well as some news about the Lumia 1320. Full press release below.

Official Music Video for Kristal, Universal Music Finland, shot on Nokia Lumia 1020 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:19 PM PST A growing trend that is music videos shot on the Nokia Lumia 1020 graces us gain. This time, with an even stronger Nokia connection as it’s a music video from Finn, Kristal. Rapping in Finnish. Interesting. The only thing I understood was “Instagram”. There’s some overhead shots that look like they were taken with the 1020 on a copter (vs the crane). The beat is quite catchy – sounds summery and not unlike what’s top in the charts.

Camera speed start up, focus and capture comparison Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:05 PM PST
Having the camera with you always is a huge bonus of them being integrated in your phone. Having superior quality in all conditions means that you make less of that compromise that most other smartphone camera owners have to. Another aspect to consider is the start up time. With Nokia Camera on the 1020, the start up time is quite longer than I’d hope it would be. Shot to shot time too isn’t the best. It’s slightly quicker on the 1520 but could still be faster. A new processor in the Snapdragon 805 might change things up a bit but until then, we can only hope for further optimisations. There’s a database that looks into start up time for cameras, AF lock time and time between shots. This is completely different to actual shutter speed times (that some have confused in comments). Another thing that frustrates me with Nokia Camera is how it no longer bypasses the password lock like the actual default camera app can. This was so convenient as you can just take a picture and have access only to the pictures you’ve currently taken. The added time of holding the camera button, then unlocking the phone, then waiting for it to start – the moment might have gone already! Cheers hulkkii for the tip! |
Skype fix coming, “fun things” coming to WP8.1 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:58 AM PST Despite owning Skype, MS didn’t give their own fans using WP much love. According to this article on TheVerge, that was an unfortunate coincidence (yeah whatever – how could you even overlook something like that?). Improvements are coming to WP Skype, as well as when it actually arrives in comparison to other platforms. Skype team have worked even more closely with the WP team for the WP8.1 version. There’s said to be a “ton of progress” and they’re apparently doing a “lot of fun things” for WP8.1 as well. Source: TheVerge Cheers Jens for the tip! |
Leaked: Nokia Normandy; Asha Device With Lumia Design. The Missing Link. Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:50 AM PST A while back @evleaks teased that one of Nokia’s devices code-named “Normandy” was the “Missing Link”. As we speculated it seems the device is the missing link joining the Asha and Lumia families by unifying the design. The device has a more than striking resemblance to the Lumia 520 and seems to up the Asha family screen size to new territories. The device does look very “premium” and doesn’t give a feature/budget phone vibe which is great for Nokia. Especially since with Android KitKat Google have dropped the hardware requirements for Android devices to a new low, making the entry level device playing field all the more interesting. Like the current line of touch Ashas (500-503) this device doesn’t have a hardware camera key, it also has capacitive touch button, rather than a hardware one as seen on the 501 and the mystery Asha we saw earlier today. What do you guys think of the device? Looks great to me! And hopefully it’ll give Nokia a push in the feature/entry level smartphone market again. |
LeakyLeak: Mystery Asha Device Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:25 AM PST @evleaks just tweeted the image above, of some mystery Asha device that we haven’t seen before. The device bears a striking resemblance to the Asha 501, but the dimensions and button seems a bit off. The newer generation of Ashas has the “Ice-touch” look of clear plastic on the edges, which means this might be an older device that never made it through; to the production line. https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/405045467601330176/photo/1
Of course the Bing logo is slightly worrying, even though it is the old logo it’s possible this is a post-Microsoft device? Who knows? What are your thoughts on the device, drop em down below.

Quick comparison: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Nokia Lumia 1020 Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:10 AM PST The PureViewClub compares the latest PV offeringl 1520 against the current king of the imaging scene (as crowned by other bloggers/tech sites), the 1020. http://pureviewclub.com/2013/19245 The processing in the 1520 looks like it opts for less saturation, properly corrected auto white balance so there’s less of the amber filter. When the likes of the 1020 gets GDR 3 and Nokia Black, it has been shown that it’s possible to reduce those 38MP shots into pretty much noise free shareable versions.
Thanks Matti Kattainen for the tip! |

Posted: 25 Nov 2013 05:48 AM PST From the trusty Janne who’s keeping us up to date on the latest info about the Jolla preorders: ________ Last Friday Jolla started sending invitations to finish the pre-orders from first and second pre-order rounds. They must be paid by December 2nd:
Initially Jolla will come on sale with white The Other-Half only. Also, Jolla has provided details about the Limited Edition The Other-Half for 1st round 100 euro pre-orders. It will come in Poppy Red, and I gather will be mailed separately in December to 100 € pre-orderers:
Finally, Jolla will start selling non-pre-order phones through DNA operator stores in Finland in December, once the pre-orders have been sent out in chronological order. Rumored date is December 7th. So, in closing the Jolla release timeline as known at this time: 1) November 14th and following days, invitations for first pre-orderers sent out to register for first sale event.
