Video: Demo of Storage Clearing on Nokia Lumia 920 – the ‘Other’ memory fix.

Belfiore has stated in recently that there’ll be a fix for the annoying ‘OTHER’ storage problem, whereby it eats up memory for no reason and there’s nothing really that users can do to fix it. This was later seen in firmware update screenshots with the latest news showing Nokia Lumia 620s already shipping with this feature.

The video below shows how clearing that temporary storage works on the Nokia Lumia 920. Ideally of course, you wouldn’t have to do any of this manually. According to the blurb, temporary files are going to be removed automatically but if you wanted to, you can clear them yourself… If that works as advertised then it’s nice that the option is or at least will be available for those that like to micro manage. It’s also nice to view the memory consumption of individual apps.

Here’s a quick video I did doing a general rundown comparison between the Lumia 920 and the 820 in terms of Hardware and design. First UNITY Built Game Hits the WP Marketplace

According to a tweet by Joe Belfiore today; the very first Windows Phone 8 game developed with UNITY engine has finally hit the marketplace. Drift Mania Championship 2 was apparently built using the Beta SDK; hopefully it won’t be long before we see more games hitting the store.

HERE Drive & HERE Drive+ Differences Explained

There was a lot of confusion regarding the type of navigation experience included in the Lumia 720 and 520 from our last post; so we reached out to the ~~Nokia~~ HERE maps guru, Pino requesting a bit of clarification. So here are the gritty details about the two and what it all means.

Hi Ali, as promised I have some answers for you.

So, first of all the only difference between HERE Drive and HERE Drive+ is the regional or global license. HERE Drive+ is providing voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation in almost 100 countries, while HERE Drive only in one country or region.

Let me give you few examples: US is a stand-alone country in this model, Canada too, but UK is in the same region as Ireland; Spain, Portugal and Andorra are one region; Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Lichtenstein another region and so on. In the specific case of Jordan, you would get the driving license only for your country.

The license selection is done automatically the first time you launch HERE Drive and it’s based on the SIM card in the smartphone. Without SIM card, HERE Drive won’t start. Let’s say you buy a Nokia Lumia 520 in Spain and put a Jordan SIM card in it, you will get the HERE Drive license for Jordan.

Some more remarks:

Although the car navigation license is for a specific country/region in HERE Drive, you can still download maps for the whole world to use e.g. in HERE Maps or 3rd party apps, you can still have walk navigation everywhere in HERE Maps, etc.
When HERE Drive/HERE Drive+ will get out of beta, it will be possible to upgrade from HERE Drive to HERE Drive+
As an overview, HERE Drive (with country/regional license) is available for Nokia Lumia 520, Nokia Lumia 720 and non-Nokia WP8 smartphones

The major point here being that the location you purchase the actual phone in isn’t an issue (relax online shoppers); as the region is set by the SIM card in the phone. Hopefully this made it a bit clearer to some of our readers

Steep Salary Raise for Nokia’s Chennai Staff

Times of India reported last week that Nokia entered into a wage pact that could see employee salaries of their Chennai facility growing as much as 200%.

3000 employees of a total 9000 will now earn Rs 21,000 per month up from Rs 7000. Other employees are said to receive varying degrees of pay increases.

Nokia has also set up a death relief fund to go to families of employees dying of natural causes a total of Rs 500,000 (5 lakh).

Improved Facebook experience coming to Lumia Windows phone says Elop

Recently in Nokia forums, an owner of Lumia 920 conveyed a complain on their forums about problems regarding the integration of Facebook in windows phone.

In the mean time Facebook has been updated various times for Windows phone 8 but still Facebook chat is very much unusable lacking at various places with poor integration and severity.

Nokia Locate3D and other unreleased apps spotted on Nokia App Highlights

Yesterday, a bug meant that searching for apps on Nokia’s App Highlights meant you could find apps that weren’t even released yet at the Windows Phone store. The bug has since been fixed but it revealled new apps such as Nokia Locate3D, MySpace (?), Tuenti Social Messenger, and new versions of WhatsApp (beta). Some apps, like Nokia MWC 2013 and Nokia News and Views were marked Nokia Internal Use only.
