Video: V3 tests Nokia Lumia 920 against BlackBerry’s Z10. Z10 fails, stutters and freezes all around.

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 06:19 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-19 at 01.08.06I’m rather surprised by how much the Nokia Lumia 920 actually demolished the Z10. I had no idea the software on it was this unreliable.

In the video below where V3 compares the 920 against the Z10, bugs/freezes really don’t help the BB much. Shame as it otherwise has a lot of promise.  It might just be having an off day, eh?

Opening maps for the first time was quite tense (subsequent attempts should give the Lumia an even more decisive win I reckon). I was surprised by the speed of phototaking (perhaps user error here) but no one other than BB could be blamed for the locking up of the gallery.

It reminded me a bit of using my N97 when it would randomly freeze at the most inappropriate moments.

Poor guy at the end trying to send an email from the 920. The girl was already poised to open the email app, but what was he doing? Just fiddling about. He does accept human error here.

Slightly edging ahead? Hmm not really no.

Lumia’s used to the Smoked By WP timed tests. I do think they can increase camera start up time though.

Nokia Lumia 720 and 520 headed to Singapore soon (By Q1?)

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 12:13 PM PDT

520 720 signapore

The picture above was sent to us by reader, Heron showing the Nokia Lumia 720 and the 520 (very edge).

We are told that it’s coming in Q1 2013. Well, we’re already in the last remaining weeks of Q1 2013 so I guess it’s safe to use the word that gives jaded chills to Nokia fans, “SOON”

Cheers Heron for the tip!

Richard Kerris to set up own consulting firm, leaving but will continue as consultant for Nokia

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 12:13 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 19.04.04Nokia’s Exec for Developer Relations, Richard Kerris, is said to be leaving Nokia to set up his own consulting firm.

http://allthingsd.com/20130318/nokia-developer-relations-exec-kerris-leaves-to-set-up-consultancy/

If the name sounds familiar, you may have seen Kerris in various video interviews, but more so because he was the guy that said that come spring, Nokia will have a product that consumers will be climbing over each other to get.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/07/09/richard-kerris-on-nokias-future-people-will-be-climbing-over-themselves-for-the-new-nokia-products/

Also, by then, Nokia’s troubles were supposedly going to be somehow ‘forgotten’.

“People Won't Remember Our Troubles By Next Spring"

He was right on Verizon Lumia, as well as a PureView Lumia (though we know what you guys are really expecting). Nokia ‘innovating themselves’ out of the situation. Well, the 920 is branded as the most innovative smartphone, winning the top prize recently for innovation. These innovations trickle down into the mid-range and budget lumias too.

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/03/15/lumia-920-wins-innovative-handset-of-the-year-award-2013/

I hope the new flagship Lumia is all we hope it to be.

Kerris remains on good terms with Nokia and will continue to consult for Nokia in the foreseeable future.

Nokia India’s Revenue Decreased 23% in 2012

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 11:43 AM PDT

DSC02082India is an essential market for Nokia; however it seems the untimely launches and multiple delays of devices (the 620 being launched just this month) have taken a toll. The annual revenue from India alone last year was 2.27 Billion Euros, a 23% decrease compared to the 2.923 Billion Euros in 2011 (factor in Currency fluctuation as well).

Nokia’s cited the reason as due to increasing competition and currency fluctuation.

“The year 2012 was one of transition for Nokia. While the first half of the year was challenging, our execution against a focused business strategy started to translate into financial results in the final three months of the year,”

Hopefully with the upcoming launch of the Lumia 720 and 520 things will start to turn around.

At first, this design appeared to be a WP8 Lumia 800. Note the Fabula design and the clip on style shells – something you can already get for the 800.

However, these shells aren’t an additional case but like the 820/620/520 are completely removable, allowing access to the battery whilst also allowing you to change how the phone looks.

Specs wise, it’s pretty standard. More from the designer, Adriano Alfaro here:

The PureView Beast that is the Nokia 808 PureView entertains the HTC One in a video comparison test.

The audio set up can also be compared.

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 16.12.20

Next up, lets do a zoom test. :p It’s only fair since features like HDR are tested in the written article, why not test ZOOM on the 808 huh?

N9Apps: Find Other Nokia N9/N950/MeeGo-Harmattan users with “Connected”.

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 11.36.17

I always find these sort of apps interesting as you can see like-minded people’s locations either locally or around the globe.

This app called “Connected” can help you find out where the other Nokia N9/N950 users are located.

http://my-meego.com/software/applications.php?name=Connected&fldAuto=2063&faq=15

Connect with other people using the same phone. Communicate, share and support!

Connected is an interactive map of Nokia N9 and N950 users. Just download the application and launch it to add yourself to the list and see where other users are based. Still in development, with more features planned.

Thanks Thomas for the tip!

Which Smartphone Would You Buy? (Nokia Lumia 920 top choice in this poll, 97% votes)

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 04:11 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 11.05.34I thought there was something wrong with the poll when I first saw it, but it’s still like that so it might be that there may be nothing to rectify.

A poll over at Phone Arena asking what would consumers buy, GS4, Xperia Z, iPhone 5 or Nokia Lumia 920 sees the Nokia Lumia 920 on top.

But it isn’t just on top, it’s on 97.86% of which there are, wait for it “572712″ votes. That’s not 57K, that’s 570k. That looks like more votes than any other online tech poll I’ve come across (and in this short space of time).

The second option goes to the Sony.

Either theres:

  1. a big Nokia/WP fan blog has redirected users to vote, or
  2. something went awry with the votes or
  3. someone’s played about with the numbers,
  4. or that many people would prefer the 920.

If only this was the case in real life.

Cheers ms.nokia and krishna6233 for the tip

Possibly a sighting of a Nokia Lumia 928? Is that the Xenon Flash?

Posted: 18 Mar 2013 12:02 AM PDT

WP_20130224_043-576x1024

According to Androsym, these photos were captured on a Nokia Lumia 928 (A 920 variant for verizon that includes Xenon flash). I couldn’t find anything on the Exif data but apparently it mentions the Nokia Lumia 928.

Here’s more information on the 928:

http://mynokiablog.com/2013/03/13/round-up-and-more-nokia-lumia-928-rumours-verizon-rep-mentions-hearing-about-12mp-lumia-for-a-while/

Whilst these pictures seem to have been heavily compressed and altered so picture quality can’t be ascertained, the important part of these pictures is the reflections.

Can’t really tell much from the above. If the hand wasn’t in the way we might be able to distinguish some changes in proportion. The 928 is rumoured to be slightly taller and narrower than the 920.

But below you can see something obviously Lumia but with a strange marking on the top (our left) corner. Could that be the Xenon flash?

Screen Shot 2013-03-18 at 06.53.50 Someone in their comments fixed the warped mirror.

It could simply be a regular Lumia, but with a sticker for so apparent reason.  It looks polycarbonate (not metal) although the picture quality isn’t clear enough to be definitive.
