Samsung Galaxy S II Unlocked Units in USA Getting Android 4.0 ICS Update Posted: 21 Apr 2012 02:56 PM PDT Samsung Galaxy S II may have already been updated on numerous carriers and markets all over the world, but the unlocked models have not yet had this privilege. I’m talking about the unlocked models in USA that have finally received their share of Ice Cream Sandwich. Before this rollout, we found out that Vodafone UK also made its customers happy by offering the owners of Galaxy S II units the latest Android release. The update for the US unlocked models is 216MB in size, so be patient and wait for it to download, because it’s well worth it. This means that almost all Galaxy S II units have reached Android 4.0 ICS right now, except for those with carrier branding and the tweaked models in the States. For example, if you own a SGS II and you’re on T-Mobile you have to wait a bit longer. The AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket has also recently received a second serving of Gingerbread, a secondary upgrade, so Android 4.0 may not be in sight for a while now. Hopefully US customers won’t have to wait for Galaxy S III in order to play with Android 4.0 on a top notch device… and get the updates on their 2011 hit phones from Samsung. Related posts: |
HTC Has No Plans for Future QWERTY-Based Devices Posted: 21 Apr 2012 08:42 AM PDT Although devices such as the HTC Touch Diamond Pro were a big hit and they hard physical keyboards, HTC doesn’t see any more input methods like these in its near future. I also liked the HTC ChaCha very much and the official claims of HTC last year were that the ChaCha has a physical keyboard that’s 10% bigger than the one of any touch and type phone. And now HTC wants to get rid of physical keys… They made this claim during the Frequencies press gathering in Seattle, where the HTC design team sat down with journalists and experts in the field and described the creation of the HTC smartphones. It’s true that the last powerful smartphones from the Taiwanese company were touch-based and that will most likely continue, but I can name you two hot devices with great designs and comfortable keyboards from the past year or so: Dell Venue Pro and Nokia E7. Meanwhile, since they’re so keen on making a lot of 4.7 inch giants (HTC One X, Sensation XL, HTC Titan and Titan II), why not give us less screen and more keyboard? Or maybe a sliding area? Imagine the beautiful One S with a keyboard beneath that shell.. it would be pure gold, believe me! Related posts: |
Verizon Wants to Push Windows Phone Devices in the Holiday Timeframe Posted: 21 Apr 2012 07:59 AM PDT I can’t really see why big carriers such as AT&T would invest dozens of millions of dollars (or hundreds) in the promotion of Windows Phone devices… Well, Verizon must have sensed that this trend must be followed, since they announced plans for a big marketing push that will promote WP handsets in the holiday time frame. Everyone has faith in the next iteration of Windows Phone, Apollo aka WP 8. Verizon is typically known as the pusher of LTE Android phones and many of them have had 720p screens lately, so promoting a bunch of handsets that are specced in the lower range area feels strange. How can you follow a phone that has LTE, a big 720p screen, great camera and Android 4.0? Will you advertise a device based on its coloured tiles? Maybe the good bitrate of video capture on Nokia Lumia phones may draw people to them, or the freebies that will probably be used to lure the public. In the UK they used Xbox 360 units bundled with Lumia 800 phones to sell them. Meanwhile, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo feels that iOS and Android need a third strong rival such as Windows Phone to better compete on the market and offer the public an alternative. Windows Phone 8.0 is highlighted here and Shammo says that Verizon is working with Microsoft on the promotion this time. The Apollo release will finally bring us better resolutions, dual core CPUs and more RAM in the Windows Phone world, but will they be enough? Related posts: |
Samsung Galaxy S III Up for Pre-order on Amazon’s German Website, Priced at 599 Euros Posted: 21 Apr 2012 07:09 AM PDT Amazon’s German website has just started taking preorders for the Samsung Galaxy S III, although the phone hasn’t even been announced yet. The device is priced at 599 euros, which equals $793, including VAT and of course the site mentions that the product is not available just yet. No pics were included here and luckily we have some specs to take a gander at: 4.7 inch Super AMOLED display, 12MP camera with LED flash and Android 4.0. 16GB of storage plus microSD card slot complete the list and this not unheard of, I’ll give you that much. It all sounds like a nifty rival to the HTC One X, maybe one with a quad core Exynos CPU and a better camera, if possible. May 3rd is when the phone will be unveiled, but Amazon usually rushes to list products, including music albums with track previews months before the release and DVD versions of movies that are not even in cinemas yet. This offer of preorder is more of a placeholder for when the real thing arrives in stores. What do you think of the price? I can say it’s a pretty accurate prediction of what the smartphone will cost once it becomes available, but are you ready to spend around $800 on a phone?! Related posts: |
Samsung Denmark Teases May 3rd Event… May be Related to Galaxy S II Plus?! Posted: 21 Apr 2012 05:41 AM PDT There goes Samsung Denmark and turns upside down every speculation and hope for May 3rd and the launch of the Galaxy S III. Why do I say that? Because of that tiny plus symbol on their teaser posted on the Samsung Denmark page. Many people have been speculating that we’ll see a Galaxy S II Plus and now the Galaxy S III next month. Also, seeing that recent leaks showed us underwhelming specs and design, I tend to believe that’s the case. It would fit perfectly with the fact that the mystery new Samsung device is codenamed I9300 and has a Mali 400 GPU plus 8MP camera. Those would make fine attributes of the Galaxy S II Plus, not the Galaxy S III, that’s expected to bring much more extra. Of course, there’s always the option of seeing not one, but two new phones, although they could cannibalize each other’s sales. I’ve also heard rumors about a potential tablet unveiling during the London event in May, so it may be an all out offensive from the South Korean company. The biggest question marks here lie around the megapixels of the camera, the storage, CPU and display. While the Galaxy S III is expected to have a 4.8 inch 1080p screen, quad core CPU and 12MP, the Galaxy S II Plus is more about the 720p 4.6 inch display, 8MP camera and dual core CPU, maybe with a slight upgrade in frequency. AT&T Starts Selling White Nokia Lumia 900s Early Posted: 21 Apr 2012 05:00 AM PDT While earlier this week we saw a magenta version of the Nokia Lumia 900, it now appears that AT&T is ready to sell the white version of the phone, too. And that happens earlier than predicted, starting from… NOW! Back when AT&T first announced the phone, it only detailed the black and cyan versions of it, with a white option following soon after. The first two arrived, but the white one was supposed to come this Sunday and some people are getting it head of scheduled, with tweets of lucky buyers showing the pics you see here. Actually, it may in fact be a publicity stunt, since the North American President Chris Weber tweeted both pics. Is it a mere teaser and are those AT&T employees? To be on the safe side, you should visit your local AT&T store tomorrow to get the white version of the largest Nokia model with Windows Phone. It’s a 4.3 inch smartphone with WP Mango, 8MP camera, 480 x 800 resolution, front 1.3MP camera, 1.4GHz single core CPU, 16GB of storage and 512MB of RAM. It appears that white phones are trendy lately, so you might feel tempted by this model… I wonder if the $99 price tag still applies. Related posts: |
