Lumia 900 sales Exceeding Expectations.

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:49 PM PDT

According to President of At&t the current amount of sales for the Lumia 900 have already exceeded their expectations; leading to multiple stores being out of stock

Nokia's Lumia 900 sales have exceeded expectations.
In fact, sales have been so good some stores have sold out of the device—particularly the blue variety—by Tuesday evening, only the second day of general availability.
Of course we won’t see the effect of those sales on the Q1 earning report but hopefully they’ll show the new rise of Nokia once Q2 report is out; it’s worth noting that Nokia hardly ever releases EXACT sales number outside the quarterly earnings- unlike Sammy who brags about every milestone (rightfully- I think that’s the way to do it; if your selling well show the people).
Of course considering that the Lumia 900 is At&ts biggest device launch ever it should only be expected to have exceeded expectations; but the true number will really show once the stormtrooper white is out since I’ve heard alot of people are holding out on purchasing a 900 until it’s available.

Videos: Nokia Lumia 900 vs HTC Titan II

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 07:00 AM PDT

I found Lisa’s review the other day and since then a couple more comparisons showed up between the Nokia Lumia 900 vs the Titan II. Both very similar in operation but arbitrarily amongst the WP fans (on WMPU) the Nokia Lumia 900 is one chosen in preference. I’d say the HTC has its merits – the camera is said to be very good and on my personal preference, I can handle the larger screens (for some even the 900 is already too big). Size wise, to to the nature of this design to waste space, is only marginally smaller (at least as it appears to on camera) than the Titan II.

The  Nokia Lumia 900 is (perhaps subjectively?) the more attractive phone by a lot of people’s opinions, rivalling that of the iPhone. In Lisa’s opinion, this unique design just looks like nothing else (well apart from Nokia’s own phones). Lisa likes the 900 for being new and different.

Lisa says in terms of speed, she cannot tell the difference between the 1.4GHz 900 and the 1.5GHz Titan II. They’re both super speedy.

by

Now Pocketnow’s take. They’re more technical with the tests. In a benchmark for speed, the Titan II got 98 whilst 900 got 85. Is this actually noticeable in real life usage? Lisa already said no. Note on their browser speed test, the 900 looks to have fractionally loaded faster and hence Adam pointing out ‘not a huge difference’. Similarly, loading a game ‘Angry Birds’ started faster. It may be due to a slight quicker press on the 900? I don’t know but you can see there the extra 100Hz makes no difference for the HTC. Maybe it helps drain the battery better.

There’s a screen test  - this is often difficult to show on camera when most fail on giving the right exposure for both phones. The first test showing Nokia’s blacks to be just black and HTC’s black to be a wash of dull dark grey. Nokia’s is so dark apparently you can’t tell the difference between that and the bezel. Whites however apparently brighter on Titan II whilst grey on the 900.

Does HTC Locations use NAVTEQ maps? In this comparison between the Titan II and the Nokia Lumia 900, Nokia Drive is missing a road that is there on the HTC! What?!

Has Samsung overtaken Nokia in handset sales?

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 05:54 AM PDT

Doing some last minute errands before I head off to the train station and then back to Manchester.

Based on the trends it was expected to happen some time this year, but we never thought so soon. I still remember from a few years back, Samsung claiming to be on a mission to dethrone Nokia. It was laughable back then given how strong Nokia seemed to be, but Samsung has continually ramped up sales, squeezing out smartphone after smartphone which to be fair, are pushing boundaries too (e.g. Note).

We suspected Samsung might have overtaken Nokia yesterday given the total 83M sales Nokia estimated for this quarter vs Samsung’s speculated 92M. Just this year Nokia lost out to Samsung/Apple for top smartphone manufacturer. Now, it seems the crown must be passed on to Samsung, with Nokia no longer the number 1 handset manufacturer by volume.

This should be confirmed by Nokia’s Q1 results on April 19th vs Samsung’s expected 92M.  Nokia’s mobile phones alone at 93.9M last quarter would have been enough (+ the smartphones to secure that top spot a little bit more). Instead both mobile phones and smartphones collapsed. 93.9M to 71M and 19m to 12M.

Here’s another interesting look from Horace of Asymco.

http://www.asymco.com/2012/04/12/how-samsung-beat-nokia/

I don’t really have time to think this through right now, have to finish picking up a few bits before I leave. Darn Carphone Warehouse was supposed to deliver my phone on Tuesday and still today it’s not here. Gah.

Thanks Damen for the tip.

Video: CJ’s look at Belle FP1 on Nokia 701

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 04:41 AM PDT

There weren’t many videos going around for Belle FP1 and so far the only one we found was somewhat blurry.

Well, here’s CJ to the rescue bringing you some clear 720p HD Belle FP1 love

Unfortunately I cannot provide my own pics of the update like last time because I only have a N8 (and that one’s broke).

CJ says:

  • Everything is smoother and faster – just a shame it’s so late in the stage
  • Apps opening quicker
  • Takes a toll on battery life
  • Pull down notifications tweaked
  • No internet for CJ to check browser :p

Cheers @ClintonJeff (YouTube name …he was the 6th member of One Direction) from unleashthephones.com (previously ZOMGitsCJ) for the tip!

Video: Nokia showcases its NFC offering at WIMA 2012

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 02:44 AM PDT

Here’s a video with Ilari Nurmi talking about Nokia’s NFC efforts for NFC at the WIMA NFC event in Monaco. This includes all of Nokia’s NFC devices, showing many applications of NFC.

Check out the Nokia 808 PureView NFC action with a NFC sticker. Working a bit like QR codes but much more simple as you just bring the phone towards the object. We’ve given many examples of the new interactions and experiences possible with NFC so I won’t reiterate that again – but it is going to be really exciting once it becomes more mainstream.

Early feedback on Belle FP1 update for Nokia 603, 700 and 701

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 01:11 AM PDT

Yesterday, owners of the original Belle handsets got an update to Belle FP1. With just under 24 hours of play time, what are your experiences so far?

  • What do you like
  • What do you dislike
  • What’s been fixed
  • What hasn’t been fixed
  • Any new bugs?
  • Any difference in speed/performance
  • Any difference in battery life (though possibly too early to tell)

Cheeers korumbooru for the screenshot.

#N9Hacks: Overclock your N9(50) to 1.1 GHz [PR 1.2]

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:45 AM PDT

Sorry it has been ages guys, but here is a pretty nice hack I have found, that lets you overclock your N9/N950s.

MYNOKIABLOG, NOR MYSELF, ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS OR CONSEQUENCES BEYOND THIS POINT

So, firstly, download INCEPTION along with Opensh and aegisctl (all can be found on inception home page).

Download this zip to your MyDocs folder

Then in terminal, execute the following;

opensh
cd MyDocs
cp *.ko /lib/modules/2.6.32.48-dfl61-20115101/
/usr/sbin/aegisctl -k
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32.48-dfl61-20115101/symsearch.ko
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32.48-dfl61-20115101/opptimizer.ko
echo 1100000000 > /proc/opptimizer

(that was EIGHT zeroes, don’t mess that up)

Upon restart, the overclocking is lost, so if you want to get rid of it, just simply reboot your phone :)

Lumiappaday #149: IonBallEX demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 Xboxlive

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:19 AM PDT

IonBallEX is a block breaker style game updated with some style. The game play is as expected, breaking blocks, moving the ‘paddle’ picking up some power-ups, but then there were things I did not expect, such as a ‘boss’ where there are no blocks but some canon thing trying to shoot you and you have to manoeuvre the ball to attack it. That’s about as far as I got in the demo.

The game, as Ali, reported, is at a sale price of just $0.99/£0.79 at the time of writing.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView hands on in India, coming in next 3-4 weeks.

Posted: 12 Apr 2012 12:05 AM PDT

Another hands on with the Nokia 808 PureView, from the same event as yesterday’s 808 hands on. Nothing new to be seen but still, I can’t get enough of it.

I like how fast the shutter press to snap is. It also seems to flash which is so quick, its hard to tell the flash went off.

BTW, I don’t think their camera is rendering the screen well as the colours almost appear all monochrome. We have seen plenty of other videos and sample pictures to know precisely that this can take fantastic shots.
