Lumia Stats graphs + WP at 6.25% in Finland (Via StatCounter). Posted: 23 Apr 2012 05:17 PM PDT This tracker was shared in our tips section, it’s called Lumia stats though I think it might actually be the whole of WP.
You can see from Statcounter, it pools it just as WP. Oh, an interesting stat. WP is now 6.25% ‘marketshare’ in Finland, at least according to Statcounter. But this is just Finland.
Update: Here’s a useful comment that explains how these stats are calculated. http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/24/lumia-stats-graphs-wp-at-6-25-in-finland-via-statcounter/comment-page-1/#comment-559921 As expected, it is an extrapolation from browser data/usage, hence why with a more capable browser in iOS, the drastic decline may be more prominent in Symbian’s poorer browser. It might also possibly explain the sharp rise in Maemo 5′s MicroB initially, due to the mind blowing browser it had at the time. Statcounter is still a good indicator for marketshare as its data reflects marketshare information collated by, say, the likes of AAS. Note: What happened to Symbian handsets in Finland that they just began to freefall from about August 2009? Is that S60 5th? It seems iOS was sucking up as Symbian descended and then Android decided to feast too. Finns were actively picking an OS that wasn’t Symbian, the home nurtured OS; furthermore, those third party OSes was not even on a Nokia. In Mid 2009. Of course, it is hard to maintain such a high marketshare when new competition comes in. If the competition is very strong, it will be a tough battle to hold your ground. Nokia’s offerings, sadly, could no longer deliver the new expectations of the ‘smartphones’ in a timely manner. Symbian’s still 3rd, above WP which is 4th, but if this trend continues, there should be a cross over by the end of during end of Q3/ start Q4. It’s looking hopeful at least that Nokia have some devices that Finns are, again, choosing. Not simply because it’s Nokia. If that was enough reason, then perhaps the decline of Symbian handsets should not have been so fast and steady. The Lumia stats is useful because you can at least see that the Lumia is on a slow, very, very, very slow, upward trajectory. Right now, this is nothing to look at and is quite laughable. Deservedly so. We can only hope to see a similar trend to Android, which when we saw here, took quite a long while before it left the flatline bed. What is this hope based on? Global release of the 900 and 610 and more of the other Lumias to Nokia’s traditional markets. (Middle East, Africa) This needs to last long enough so we can see Nokia’s WP8 handsets launch on steady footing. With Windows 8 tablets highly anticipated, a successful W8 launch could bolster the Metro based Windows Phone – which to now polarises in part due to a very strange paradigm of user experience. It is extremely difficult to coax people to try WP, how can you make sales if people don’t even want to try it? On the whole it seems that once they do, users like it. It does quite a lot of core smartphone things extremely well. It lacks the bells and whistles but the likes of the 900 are adequately priced. With so much attractive offerings from the competition, the huge task is to get them to consider and try your alternative product. Good marketing and exposure seems to have done a good job so far for the 900 in USA. A compelling new PC experience in W8 as well as continued marketing may greatly help adoption of the Metro interface. If it doesn’t work, then both Nokia and MS are up a creek without a paddle. Analyst predicts at least 1M Nokia Lumia 900s from AT&T sold for Q2? Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:01 PM PDT In Q4, AT&T sold 9.4 Million smartphones. 7.6M were staggeringly all iPhones. That’s what 4-5 years of excellent brand recognition and sturdy progress gets you. That left about 1.8M combined sales for Androids/BlackBerries and what ever devices they had. I can’t seem to find AT&T’s Q1 2012 results, but I’d expect them to be slightly lower given Q4 2011 being the holiday period. Nevertheless, except of iPhone, 1M of anything on AT&T is quite an ambitious target. But it’s one Nokia needs to aim for. I don’t know quite know the precise the basis of this is, but an ‘analyst’, Jamie Townsend from Town Hall Investment Research reckons Nokia Lumia may have sold in excess of 1M. I’m not sure that’s possible. One network from one country, even if it is USA? I thought it was only supposed to be several hundred thousands based on the last analyst predictions? AT&T did comment before that the Lumia 900 would have exceeded expectations, but I would not have expected it to reach this much. It would be great if it did, but I’m a little sceptical. Forbes also posted before that the launch of the 900 was pretty indicative of some decent sales, but we must see this be a consistent trend, not just a burst at the start. An extrapolation of game data, Taptide, suggests possibly in excess of 1M Nokia Lumia 900s from AT&T for Q2. Whilst these aren’t hard data, we should be aware that they have proven themselves in the past, i.e. predicting that Nokia had already sold the most second gen WP devices. The faintest sign of some recovery? The Nokia Lumia 900 is excellently priced at AT&T for what it offers. I hope the worldwide variants receive the same treatment and that Nokia can at least hold on long enough to release their WP8 devices. Thanks Heron for the tip. |
Nokia Downfall, Who to blame, what to do, Nokia down but not out! Posted: 23 Apr 2012 12:07 PM PDT
Here are a few very good reads for you guys, the first three are in Finnish. You’ll have to push it through your translator of preference (which will most likely mangle it a bit) but will give you the overall message. Mine is failing at certain paragraphs so I’m just skim reading them. I thought I might as well put them together since they all seem to be talking about similar points and each flows from one to another. Well at least to me: 1) Downfall of Nokia 2) Who to blame 3) What to do. 4) Hope. Nokia is down but not out. First up, Downfall of Nokia. Apparently this was on TV. They mention how actions that made Nokia super popular in 2006 cemented Nokia’s future demise. Victim of its own success.
The easy person to blame, at least if you look at some of our readers, is of course, Stephen Elop. Now the above already somewhat indicates Nokia’s demise started before Elop but here’s another piece saying that Nokia’s demise also began many years ago. I’m afraid I found the translated version a little too taxing to decipher (or perhaps I’m just impatient as I’m meant to be meeting a friend now).
This blog post talks about things that Nokia should do, written by an ex Nokian. This is NOT necessarily what I would want but I don’t have time to come up with my own suggestions. I’d say of course just to follow through on the execution of this strategy. Don’t falter again.
Now an English source: TechCrunch who writes that Nokia is down but not out. Things may look bleak but there’s still a chance for Nokia to turn things around with their current strategy. It takes time to reverse a decade of ills and things seem to be on a trajectory of looking worse before they look better.
Cheers Janne, DKM, meh and EagleEye for the tips! |

No Skype for Lumia 610 – 512mb Ram Required Posted: 23 Apr 2012 11:10 AM PDT Well we all knew this was coming, but I personally didn’t imagine it would start with such a vital app; as Jay posted Skype graduated from Beta yesterday and is now available directly in the marketplace, required that you have 512Mbs or Ram. Currently this only leaves two devices out of the video chatting fun, the Lumia 610 and some ZTE low end device. Worry not however since this is listed as “Known Problem” which hopefully means that it will soon be fixed, I guess for now Tango is your go to app (plus the fact that it provides background calls). Thanks to Everyone who sent this in. |
Nokia Browser with S40, now with Multitasking to switch between messaging and web. Posted: 23 Apr 2012 08:21 AM PDT
NokConv reports that Nokia Browser for S40 is updated to 2.0. I don’t know where the screenshot is from, but it looks like an odd resolution for S40 (unless that instead of showing just what’s on the screen we are given what the full page is supposed to look like, sans scrolling?). The screenshot also doesn’t look like S40, i.e. not clunky at all. Also, there’s mentions that you can multitask between the browser and texting. At what stage now should we expect more widestream multitasking and then S40 for Nokia to suddenly catapult itself back as the number 1 smartphone manufacturer by a wide margin?

WP7.5 Refresh update to bring WiFi sharing for Nokia Lumia 710 (and 800?) Posted: 23 Apr 2012 07:58 AM PDT At the end of March, Nokia confirmed WiFi Tethering would be coming in an update to the likes of the Nokia Lumia 710 and 800. Why it wasn’t there to begin with, well, that’s a whole other complaint. News is that it will appear on the next refresh of wp7.5. Date of arrival still unknown though some Lumias (China Lumia 800) have been spotted with this feature already.
This firmware is apparently already on Nokia’s servers. Source: wp7.nl via nokiapoweruser Cheers Draco for the tip. |
Lumiappaday #160: National Zoo (Smithsonian) demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:46 AM PDT National Zoo is an app that will let you watch live webcams from the Smithsonian National Zoo. All the video content is done by about 3 minutes in, I was just playing with the app on my own afterwards. #160) National Zoo
