Samsung GT-I9300 Graphic Benchmarks Defeat the Competition Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:56 PM PDT Samsung GT-I9300 may or may not be the Galaxy S III but what’s for sure is that it’s a powerful device, at least in the graphics area. The handset’s benchmarks were carelessly left behind on the GLBenchmark testing area, so we can see what the handset is about. They were left there by mistake apparently. Of course, the results were taken down in the meantime, but at least we have the pics to prove their existence. What we’re dealing with here is a quad core Exynos 4412 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz and using an ARM Mali 400 GPU clocked at 400 MHz, so it’s 50% faster than the Galaxy S II on the graphics side. We certainly wished we had seen the Mali T-604 in action here, a GPU that provides 5 times the performance of the Mali 400 and it’s part of the Exynos 5 series. Anyway, back to the GT-I9300 its results beat the ones of the Snapdragon S4-based models and Tegra 3 as well, by quite a margin, as shown in these pics. Even the iPhone 4S is surpassed in the GPU tests and the GPU faces the fresh graphical solution on the iPad 3 with bravery. We tend to believe that this is actually the Galaxy S III seeing all of these benchmarks… So, for now the Exynos 4412 GPU is as potent as the new PowerVR on the iPad 3 and keep in mind that this is a prototype Samsung phone, not the final one, so it could be even better. LG Optimus 3D Max Debuts in Europe After We Reviewed It Posted: 23 Apr 2012 11:13 AM PDT Remember the LG Optimus 3D Max? It’s LG second attempt at making a viable 3D phone and one that succeeded better this time, I’d say. We already reviewed this handset quite a while ago and you can read more about it here. We’re dealing with a 1.2 GHz dual core smartphone that’s now more appealing in design than the predecessor. The original LG Optimus 3D was bulky, caused eye problems and had a poor battery life. Now I’m happy to inform you that both headaches and bulky design are gone, while the battery life has been improved. The handset offers a 4.3 inch WVGA parallax barrier display and sadly there are no launch dates or price to detail here. 8GB of storage and a dual 5MP camera with 3D capture are also among the specs, in case you’re wondering. The phone measures only 9.6mm in waistline and it’s very elegant in its black version. Hopefully it will reach the market with Android 4.0 ICS instead of Gingerbread, although I can’t guarantee that since the phone was announced as a Android 2.3 device. I would also like a change of UI or an evolution of that 3D area that’s exactly the same as on the model from one year ago. HDMI is also present on this smartphone, just so you know. Related posts: |
Motorola XT560 Low End Android Phone Coming Soon Posted: 23 Apr 2012 10:56 AM PDT Looking for a tiny Android smartphone to suit your needs? Meet the Motorola XT560, a lower handset running Google’s mobile OS that seems to borrow from the design of the Motorola Photon 4G model on Sprint. This device should hit Europe and the rest of the world soon. Moto XT560 was confirmed by the FCC last week and the image here was sent to androidgreed by a tipster. The source couldn’t say where he got the image, so there’s no way to tell if this is a genuine shot or not. It may end up being an entirely different phone, still a smaller one with lower end specs. The Motorola XT560 comes with a HVGA display with unknown diagonal size, HSDPA 850/1900 MHz, WiFi and Bluetooth. At the back there’s a 3 megapixel camera at the back, also a front facing camera present here, a microSD card slot and the brain of the new Moto newcomer is a 800 MHz CPU. The processor is made by Qualcomm and it helps run Android 2.3 Gingerbread, probably with some minor customizations. I can’t help but think that this handset is somewhat a rival for an Xperia Mini unit, so maybe it also has some customization that fits Android 2.3 to the smaller screen like the 4 screen corner icons on the Xperia Minis… Related posts: |
Samsung Galaxy S III Teaser Fail – Cliche Clip and iSheep Attack! (Video) Posted: 23 Apr 2012 05:59 AM PDT Samsung posted a teaser on this website over the weekend promising to unveil something big today… However, all they did was unveil a poorly done clip that a school boy could have done with his eyes closed. They show us some pretty pics of galaxies and then some sheep, a clear reference to the Apple fans, who have been called sheep before. Hours before the unveiling we found out from Slashgear that they cracked the mystery, uncovering some directories on the website, but all they did is come across the image files associated to the letters that in anagram spell out The Next Galaxy. This also applies to the address of the website shown below as a Source link, the one that contained the countdown. Everyone was expecting to see at least a profile picture of the Galaxy S III or maybe its back or a corner… The mystery remains and everything will be cleared on May 3rd in London, when Samsung has an event scheduled. This one will probably be an Unpacked event meant to unveil the new Galaxy S, maybe also a new tablet, according to rumors. The invite Sammy sent out and this clip seem to show us some spots of colour that look very bright and have a nice texture, a hint at the back case of the Galaxy S III, maybe? I still consider it’s stupid to impose prejudice and call fans of other brands sheep… Related posts: |
Windows Phone Tango Update Coming This Month (Rumor) Posted: 23 Apr 2012 04:25 AM PDT We’ve heard about Windows Phone Tango before in the context of it running on Nokia Lumia 610 and ZTE Orbit or better said being compatible with these days. Now, rumors say that we’re supposed to wait for this update to arrive this month on all compatible WP devices. Since WP was first released in Q4 2010 we’ve had two major updates: NoDo, with its copy/paste and CDMA support and the much bigger Mango, with multitasking, a new IE browser and some interface changes. Now there’s Tango coming soon, allowing Windows Phoen to run on lower specced devices, that use as little as 256MB of RAM. Tango also handles SIM contacts, supports sending multiple images via MMS and includes a bunch of other small features. However, it also has limitations, like the lack of compatibility with some apps, lack of fast app switching, lack of Local Scout, some video codecs and no change of using the SkyDrive automatic photo upload. Chinese site WPDang claims that Tango will come this month and by the end of June it will already run on over 90% of the Windows Phone units on the market. Apollo is the big thing to watch out for here, since Windows Phone 8 will be the one that introduces dual core processors and 720p screens in the WP universe, plus NFC. October is when it’ll arrive, most likely… Related posts: |
Baidu Preparing $160 Smartphone Running Custom Android ROM Posted: 23 Apr 2012 02:07 AM PDT Baidu is China’s own Google rival, that started out as a search engine and evolved into cloud services, email and even socializing. In September 2011 the company even came up with an OS (Baidu Yi), that looks and feels like Android, but with Baidu equivalent services. Now they’re preparing a cheap smartphone based on that OS. The handset will be made by Foxconn, it will pack a 3.5 inch display and it has no release date just yet. We could see the product in stores by the year end and odds are very small that this will ever leave China. Baidu will most likely advertise the hell out of this product and reach impressive sales. Also, with the public already fond of the Baidu services, it will be nice to have them in the pocket with a strong integration of the email, social networking and other services of the company into the new smartphones. Nokia should take this as bad news, since Baidu knows the local market very well and that low pricing would kills the Finns’ lower end Windows Phone offers and Symbian as well, maybe even the S40 ones. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what the appeal of the product will be and how the carriers get involved in this project. Related posts: |
HTC Rumored to be Working on ST-Ericsson-Based Custom Chip for Smartphones Posted: 23 Apr 2012 01:25 AM PDT HTC seems to be getting into the custom chip game, probably bothered by the production problems of the Snapdragon S4, found in the HTC One Xl smartphone. We all know that Apple makes it own custom chip designs, while Samsung has the Exynos and Sony has ST-Ericsson chips. Even Huawei has its own quad core chipset and now HTC goes down that route, too. HTC is working together with ST-Ericsson to create a custom processor, that’s ideal for lower end smartphones with Android. The result will hit the market next year and I really wonder what the contribution of HTC is here, since they’re new in this field. They might simply give their partner some power and performance figures to go by. The chip that’s being developed may end up being a version of the ST-Ericsson U4500, announced in February 2011. That one combines the 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 with an ARM Mali 400 GPU and HSPA+ modem. WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and NFC are also supported and the chip was created with $100 smartphones in mind. The good thing here is that HTC can deliver these chips in time and not be forced to wait on the likes of Qualcomm, that are overwhelmed by demand for the Snapdragon S4. Still, I wonder if HTC will share the goods with other companies… Related posts: |
Nokia Far From Danger Zone According to Bloomberg Interview (Video) Posted: 23 Apr 2012 12:54 AM PDT Roger Windsor, a Nomura analyst recently talked to Bloomberg about Nokia and its future. The discussions were based on the situation of the Finnish company, its finances and future. You must be aware that sales in Q1 have dropped quite a lot compared to the last year for Nokia and also that they’re losing a lot of money. However, Roger Windsor says that we shouldn’t worry, since Nokia is not in danger, having a strong net cash position. They do use up a lot of money, but they’re far from massive debts or bankruptcy. The only big problem they have right now is the fact that rating agencies will prepare downgrades seeing their financial performance in Q1. The experts also discussed the lack of success of the Lumia series, that has failed to attract customers in the same way that iOS and Android handsets have. The problem is that Windows Phone is very different from what Android and iOS are offering and this lack of familiarity is what’s driving people away. It appears that once Windows 8 is released, people will become used to Metro UI, rediscover Windows Phone and adopt it. A big mistake that Nokia made is pricing the lower end smartphones wrong. Rivals are selling Android units for less than $100 for example, while Nokia has failed to deliver such a device. The feature phone OS is now in the works and we’re supposed to expect an S40 update in June, according to people in the know, a very important focus for the Nordic company, that sells a lot of feature phones. Nokia Windows Phone 8 Models User Agents Spotted Posted: 23 Apr 2012 12:33 AM PDT Windows Phone 8 is starting to become part of the daily rumors recently, together with the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. Now there’s fresh evidence that the latest OS made by Microsoft for mobiles is being tested out there. The latest report comes via DSLReport’s mobile speed test, that shows the user agent of two WP8 units. One is named Qualcomm Fluid, while the other is the Nokia Fluid. Both have been seen before, but now we have the full user agent confirming their existence and the fact that they run IE10. One of them is a Verizon unit that’s also shown to have LTE, while the T-Mobile handset is a tad slower. The folks of wmpoweruser have also claimed that they’re seeing Windows Phone 8 handsets on the same networks in their very own server logs and that the data they collect points towards resolutions of 768 x 768 and 480 x 480. Most of the Windows Phone 8 traffic is shown as coming from AT&T, not Microsoft and nothing coming out of Sprint right now. You can see the relevant pages in Google’s cache right here and I really wonder what the deal is with those resolutions… Should we prepare for square 4:3 ratio screens in a combination with physical keyboards?
