Do you remember those funky wallpapers for the Nokia N9 as seen in the brandbook?

http://brandbook.nokia.com/blog/view/item66127

You can see those artwork at the exhibition, filmed below. The middle one is my current wallpaper. I’d love that as a print/poster. You can actually find a high resolution version here:

During 2011 we had a nice collaboration with Nokia, who generously helped us to make the festival’s accompanying exhibitions happen, and they were also so kind to commission a little portrait of our activities by prestigious FriendsOfFriends.

Lumiappaday #162: Max & the Magic Marker demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 11:36 AM PDT

This is Max & the Magic Marker, a pretty fun game with an interesting gameplay.  It reminds me of Numpty Physics for the N900 where your drawing interacts with the game. However it is a platformer, so you, as max have to traverse the different levels, using the market when appropriate.

I meant to demo this a long while ago (back when the price was a whopping £4 and not the £0.79 it is now) but never got around to it (so many other apps came in the way, :/). I only just remembered to record it as 162 was initially meant to be App Highlights but there was no marketplace link for this for me to share.

The video gives a demo of the first level and a bit of the next one. Take this as more of a demo again than a review. It’s definitely something you should check out, and at £0.79 it’s extremely well priced. If you’re still not convinced, use the trial.

Max & the Magic Marker is an award-winning physics-based puzzle platformer.

The game is for all audiences yet still challenging for the hardcore gamer.

Max plays like a classic platformer but with a twist. You have a magic marker that enables you to draw freehand in the game – everything you draw becomes real and can be interacted with in the game world. You must help Max overcome enemies, obstacles and puzzles on his journey.

Enjoy:

- Lots of puzzles with multiple solutions!

- Earn loads of achievements!

- Compete against your friends on the leaderboards!

- 15 awesome levels in 3 unique worlds!

One day Max gets a mysterious marker in the mail. The first thing he draws is a monster, but as soon as the pen leaves the paper, the monster comes to life and jumps into another drawing. It must be stopped, so Max draws himself onto the page and the chase begins.

The game has received several awards including the "Independent Games Festival 2010 (IGF) D2D Vision Award".

Nokia N9 wins Design and Art Direction award; coveted Yellow Pencil for interactive design.

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 04:13 AM PDT

The Nokia N9 has achieved a Design and Art Direction award. It was actually nominated in two categories,  recognised in product design and interactive design for products.

The first category was actually won by a swanky chair. The second category, the N9 wins the coveted ‘yellow pencil’ which are ‘recognised the world over as a symbol of true creative achievement.’ This is for the innovative new swipe interface; gesture based swiping that does away with physical or virtual buttons on the homescreen.

We're absolutely thrilled at this award. We knew the Nokia N9 was a beautifully designed product, both inside and outside, but recognition from an authority like D&AD is no less exciting anyway. And we're sure that owners will be delighted to know that their smartphone has been identified as one of just two "outstanding" product designs released in 2011

The successful design in the N9 has been praised in the 800 and 900, with several competitors now producing similar designs themselves trying to get some of that colourful, bold, polycarbonate action with curved screens.

Overwhelming US demand for Nokia Lumia 900 sees UK launch on May 14

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 02:53 AM PDT

According to V3, a Nokia spokesperson said the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900 in the UK will be seen on May 14 (earlier date we last saw from Phones4U at April 27, though Nokia never mentioned a specific date) because of high demand in the US. We heard Nokia were trying to make Lumia 900s as fast as they can for the US market but it seems even that is not enough and now stock will be diverted perhaps to US? It could really be great demand or that production is inexorably slow.

The overwhelming demand for the Lumia 900 in the US with AT&T has, unfortunately, had a small knock-on effect on product availability in the UK

Update: As noted in the comments, the production will probably be focusing on producing Lumias for US AT&T as opposed to generic UK model, not actually shipping the LTE free ones to the US.

Jorma Ollila: Nokia to turn things around at the end of the year, success in the next few years…

Posted: 25 Apr 2012 02:38 AM PDT

Fossi mails in a translation from the Finland’s leading Swedish newspaper, Huvudstadbladet, that talked about Jorma Ollila, ex CEO soon to be succeeded as Chairman by Risto Siilasmaa.

He says that turnaround of Nokia will be seen at the end of the year, confident that Nokia will sort out their problems. Ollila says that the major changes are slow, and only in the next few years will we see how Elop has succeeded. Elop has had a year and a half already, but Ollila estimates that it takes 18 months minimum to bring about significant change and so in the next two to four years, we will see the impact Elop had.

Is this confidence from knowing Nokia’s future strategies and products? Ollila was expected to stick around with Nokia and not retire sooner than he did to shepherd Nokia through difficult periods. Is he leaving because Nokia is now on the right path? Or perhaps that’s just executive speak and he’s just leaving, either because he has been at Nokia for 27 years or maybe, worryingly he doesn’t really think Nokia will turn things around?

Success in the next few years? This year is mostly said to be the year of transition (again :/) but with the new strategy. Hopefully Nokia has some class leading products at the end of the year in all aspects of Nokia’s portfolio, and that the current phones sell enough to be seen as a start of healing and turn around at Nokia.

  • Jorma Ollila, who soon resigns as chairman of mobile phone maker Nokia believes that a turn for the better will be done within the company at the end of this year.
  • In an interview with MTV3 Ollila says that he is confident that Nokia sort out their problems.
  • Ollila stresses that major changes are slow. Only the next few years shows how CEO Stephen Elop has succeeded.
  • Elop has led Nokia in a year and a half years.
  • Over the next two to four years shows what kind of impact he had. 18 months is the minimum time during which you can bring about a significant change, estimates Ollila.
  • According to Ollila solves a merger is not Nokia’s problems.
  • Company cultures are so different that there is great reluctance to start combining them.
  • Ollila has been working with Nokia for 27 years. He resigns as chairman next week. Ollila is succeeded by Risto Siilasmaa

Cheers Fossi for the tip and translation!
