Chinese White Box Vendors Ready to Ship 200 Mil Smartphones

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 12:29 PM PDT

China-based white box vendors will get an impressive impact on the smartphone market this year, since estimations say that they’ll ship 200 million smartphones this year. The info comes from industry sources in Taiwan and their advantage is the availability of cheap chip solutions.

Taiwanese company MediaTek will offer the makers its MT6575 chip solution, that will be available for use on entry level smartphones in Q1 2012. There’s also the MT6577 chipset for high level devices, that will be available in the third quarter of 2012. MediaTek will ship 50-70 million chips to the white box vendors mentioned above, for around 30% of the smartphones that will be shipped by the vendors in 2012. Qualcomm has also enhanced the promotion on the Chinese market and now offers turn key solutions to the vendors we mentioned plus prices as low as $6 for chips.

White box vendors from China will sell more than 60% of their smartphone output to overseas markets and these include area where 3G networks aren’t that popular and mature yet, sources say. We’re also expecting a larger market demand seeing that production costs will drop to $60, $85 and $130, according to the sources. We’ve tested some interesting devices from Allview, Eboda and Evolio, Eastern European companies that buy white box vendor devices and rebrand them, plus they add something extra to the price and still the result is affordable. Will they also revamp their lineup as the chip prices drop? We’ll see…

Quad Core Meizu MX Phone Launching in June, Packing 2GB of RAM

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 09:07 AM PDT

Forget the Samsung Galaxy S III! What you need to set your sights on right now is the Meizu MX quad core smartphone, that will come this summer with a very potent array of specs. These include 2GB of RAM, a quad core CPU and 64GB of storage. Is this the definitive smartphone or what?

Believe it or not the Meizu MX will use a Samsung ARM-based quad core Exynos A9 processor, unbelievable as it may seem. People seem to believe that this is the same CPU that will be used on the Galaxy S III and I sure hope we’ll see the Meizu MX after the Galaxy S III, else Samsung will feel frustrated by the fact another company uses its technology and possibly sells millions of units. Meizu is saying that the smaller 32 nm architecture of the new CPU gives the new handset better battery life and greatly improved performance.

60% enhancements in processing and 50% increase in graphics are expected. The battery consumption is also reduced and on the quad core Meizu MX we’ll get a 1700 mAh battery. The device will also have a near Retina Display screen with 292 ppi performance and at the back there will be an 8 megapixel camera with backside illumination. As far as the OS goes, we’ll have Android 4.0 ICS available with the Flyme OS UI overlay on top and users will be able to choose between a 32 GB and 64 GB Meizu MX.

The price will be around $475 for the 32GB version and $634 for the 64GB one.

HTC One X and One S Getting Ready for USA Launch

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 06:30 AM PDT

HTC One S and the One X have been the talk of the town in Europe and now they’re getting ready to take over the USA. Sprint previously launched a new HTC EVO model that’s basically a combo between these two handsets, but some people may want the real thing. Of course, the One X is expected in the localized One XL version.

The One XL replaces the Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor with a dual core Snapdragon S4, that has proved to be better than the Tegra 3 in some aspects. There’s also LTE on board of the HTC One XL, that will be sold by AT&T. April 25th is the date thrown around when it comes to the HTC One S, but we’re far from a confirmation right now. T-Mobile also sent out press invitations recently for an event taking place tomorrow, so maybe they’re ready to unveil their version of the HTC One models.

The retail launch of the HTC One XL remains a mystery, while some sources have mentioned “later this week” as the time frame, after an AT&T announcement today, supposedly. As usual, we advise you to take the info with a pinch of salt and not trusted the “insiders”. In the meantime I remind you that we’re testing the HTC One X, the European quad core version right now and a review will be ready soon enough!

Samuel Jackson and Zooey Deschanel Advertise the iPhone 4S in Siri-based Ads (Video)

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 05:48 AM PDT

Who better than Nick Fury and the queen of hipsters, Zooey Deschanel to advertise the iPhone 4S? I mean, geeks will love Sam Jackson, because now he’s a Marvel character and he also played in Pulp Fiction, while Zooey is quirky and… nerdy, so they’re perfect for these ads.

Apple may want to start an entire series of ads for the iPhone 4S and Siri and it appears that the clips you see hare are show in rotation for all 3 major US carriers, Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. Seeing that the new iPhone has been on sale since last Fall, there’s really no point in advertising some more now, since all the globe knows about Siri and the iPhone 4S. Well, maybe they want to get rid of those extra units, before starting to make a bulk order for the iPhone 5?!

Anyway, there’s more to Siri than finding recipes, ordering soup or finding out the weather, I’ll give you that much… Anyway, after seeing to many parodies to Apple’s ads and products, it’s refreshing to see them making their own commercials, ready to be parodied once again.

New Info About Samsung Galaxy S III Launch Reveals 16/32GB Storage, 1080p Display

Posted: 17 Apr 2012 03:57 AM PDT

We know that the Samsung Galaxy S III is launching on May 3rd, as Samsung themselves confirmed via a press invite, but what about the shop launch? Well, that’s taken care of by rumors, as usual, this time coming from a source of the guys at BGR. My only hope is that these rumors will also be complemented by a leaked photo or video by the end of the month…

So, the unnamed source mentioned above is saying that Samsung will offer at least two storage options for the third Galaxy S unit in the flagship series. We’ll have a 16 GB unit that’s cheaper and a 32 GB one. We wonder why there’s no 64 GB mentioned and if there will be, I guess we can say goodbye to microSD storage. The phone is also supposed to be available in blue/black and white. The retail launch is still a mystery, but it appears that the device will be sold simultaneously all over the globe with major launch events in all countries.

This product will also be tied in with the London Olympics 2012, with cross promotion and stuff. Samsung Galaxy S III will be the official phone of the event and don’t surprised if every gold medalist will get one. And finally, the BGR source says that there will be a 1080p display on board of the Galaxy S III, unbelievable as that may seem at this point. Are we truly ready to go to 1080p, seeing that 720p is starting to catch on?
