Nok Conv: Nokia Asha Infographic.

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 04:10 PM PDT

Check this out – it’s a pretty cool Nokia Asha infographic from Nok Conv.

Asha represents Nokia’s next billion, which based on the recent discussions we are all hoping will soon migrate to become a smartphone platform.

I don’t know why the shape is of a downward arrow.

Word Tiles – Words With Friends for Symbian and MeeGo

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT

We were contacted by a developer yesterday named Kimble Young who wanted to share his app – a game for Symbian and MeeGo called Word Tiles – an equivalent to Words with Friends. Scrabble if you will.

Word Tiles

He asked if we wanted to know any more so we asked him some questions that I thought might interest our readers.

  • what it was like developing the game,
  • what tools you used,
  • how long it took and
  • why you chose to develop for Nokia devices, and
  • what you think of Qt.

The game has actually been in development for 10 months now when it became obvious that Symbian needed a great multiplayer crossword game. The length of time that it took is due to the fact that it’s mainly been just me working on it and as a hobby not a full time job. The game is developed almost entirely in Qt Quick using QML and javascript which really is a big tip of the hat to capabilities of the Qt Quick platform.

Nokia really has had a bad time since management last year basically said stop developing for the platform. It left a huge vacuum in developer mind share which I must admit I and a few others have exploited since. Nokia apps have actually helped me, my wife and two year old daughter to travel the world for the last six months . Coming from Australia we’ve spent time in the USA and Europe. I’ve become a digital nomad.

As long as Symbian/N9 users keep using their phones I will keep supporting them.

The future for Fumbo (my label) will no longer be exclusively on Symbian but employing more HTML5 technologies as it evolves for mobile devices. This won’t mean Nokia users lose out though as there’s good support nok Meego and even Symbian for these technologies.

N9 Getting Multiple Updates, PR 1.3 Imminent?

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 02:15 PM PDT

While browsing through the tip section (and my own N9) it seems that there are multiple updates being pushed out for the N9 in the past two days including:

  • Developer Mode
  • Nokia Link PC connection (Nokia Suite usually gets updated right before pushing out FW updates- so this could be a sign)
  • Real Golf (Not really important but as mentioned by Gerii in the comments this was also updated shortly before PR1.2)

Could this be a prep for PR1.3? (Which hasn’t been leaked too much but we did see evidence of it even before PR1.2 was pushed out)- what do you guys think?

Nokia comments on Moody’s credit rating announcement

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 07:28 AM PDT

Just reiterating a press release from Nokia. Have to go back now and finish Uni work again…

Espoo, Finland – Nokia notes today’s announcement from Moody’s, reaffirming its investment grade credit rating. Earlier today Moody’s downgraded Nokia’s long-term credit rating to Baa3 and maintained the negative outlook on the rating. Moody’s stated that its investment grade rating is backed by Nokia’s strong liquidity position and capital structure.

Nokia’s financial position remains strong. As of March 31 2012, Nokia had gross cash balances of EUR 9.8 billion, and a net cash position of EUR 4.9 billion.

Cash conservation remains a priority for Nokia in the current transition. We are making progress with our previously announced targets to reduce non-IFRS operating expenses by more than EUR 1 billion in Devices & Services, and to reduce non-IFRS operating expenses and production overheads by EUR 1 billion in Nokia Siemens Networks.

“Nokia is quickly taking action. Nokia will continue to increase its focus on lowering the company’s cost structure, improving cash flow and maintaining a strong financial position,” said Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia’ Executive Vice President and CFO.

Nokia will report its first quarter 2012 results on April 19, 2012.

Videos: Grand Theft Auto 3 on Nokia N9 (NITDROID) + other Android Games.

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 07:15 AM PDT

I came across these over the weekend but didn’t get around to posting them (huge backlog of things to write :S)

Here’s another collection of videos showing Android on the Nokia N9 with some pretty cool games, the first being Grant Theft Auto 3.

I also really like how the touch faux capacitive buttons work, as the Clear Black AMOLED display melts into the bezel. There were rumours that the first ever Lumia would have that (though there were outcries by some that it should just be left alone). I’m liking this approach myself.

So, again, for those who asked why on earth would anyone put Android on the N9? The answer is why not. If people want to, they option is there.

There’s also Shadowgun

Real Racing 2

Soul Craft

Counter Strike?

Video: Little kid talks about the Nokia Lumia 900 (He loves the phone)

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 02:34 AM PDT

I’m not sure if his parents made him do this or if he’s just part of the new super tech savvy bunch of kids that just know how to do all of this (producing a video, edited with cuts, images etc) already at his age.

Anyway, I thought it was interesting that such a little kid would take on the subject of the Nokia Lumia 900. He doesn’t like that it runs on ‘Windows’ but other than that, he LOVES the phone.  He goes on to say that Windows doesn’t feature much on this phone, not doing anything except I.E. but he likes the layout, not very Windows Like – just a really nice, non cluttered, neutral layout. He thinks the blue 900 is sweet. The Xbox part he found strange, thinking it needed Xbox but then explains it’s a game hub. Finally he talks about Nicki Minaj’s promo for the 900 (which he says was not necessary) then at the end he dances to Nicki Minaj’s starships as a joke.

Lumiappaday #153: foursquare demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 16 Apr 2012 01:58 AM PDT

This is the official foursquare app. Pretty much just a quick demo of what it looks like on Lumia as opposed to a review. I don’t have much time at the moment to fully explore these apps so hopefully a demo will do for now.

I’m not really a Foursquare user, I haven’t been hit with the check in bug yet but I know there are many that like the service. I like that it was quick to start up and find  the nearest and most appropriate locations I’d want to check into. There’s a quick check in button there that is fast and no fuss.

Other aspects hopefully shown in the video but I may have missed other features. I wanted to show a different, and more used Foursquare app but I don’t even remember what my password was to use it.

Rating:

Design: 9

Looks good.

Usability: 8

A little bit confusing at times where I was in the app. If you just use the features on the surface it’s otherwise extremely simple and easy to use. Turn on, check in, done.

Performance: 9

Whilst it loads fast and has quick resume, some things take a long while to load. Fortunately it’s not the crucial checking in parts.

Price: 10

It’s free :)
