Video: Nokia N9 and Indoor positioning with ‘White Spaces’ from Nokia Research Centre

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 05:30 PM PDT

Here’s a video from Nokia demonstrating a 3 year project in the Imperial War Museum, Cambridge. This project uses something called TV ‘white spaces’ for indoor positioning.

This particular technology is not yet ready to go mobile, as you need a small suitcase for the radio. However, there are many other possible implementations for indoor positioning, some of which Nokia has already demonstrated done purely from phones. This one reuses spectrum (no paying auction fees to use), improved internet access (not sure why) and allows for new services.

Nokia Lumia 710 unboxing (by Nokia Lumia 710)

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 04:31 PM PDT

Here’s another unboxing of the Nokia Lumia 710 from the UK but this one is from Carphone Warehouse. You can see that it actually has the original Nokia packaging as opposed to the random red box from Vodafone (which some informed me might have been a return unit – plus the phone seemed to have already been used anyway).

My sister took these photos, using the first Lumia 710 (I was already back in Manchester when these first arrived).  It was late in the afternoon, indoors so poor lighting (and the watermarker makes the pictures worse), taken in Auto (not macro). BTW, when I do unboxing photos, they’re almost always now taken with a DSLR in at least optimum lighting. I’d say the 710 would have done a better job than my 800 (though the one I use seems to be faulty compared to the batman lumia :/)

As we saw last time, the prices are still on that very low £129.95 on some networks. It is still more expensive to buy from the network directly.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/06/nokia-lumia-710-dirt-cheap-at-129-95-crazy/

BTW, the Lumia from Carphone Warehouse is unlocked, you can pick up from there and put any SIM in afterwards – no unlocking fee necessary. I have no affinity with CPW, frankly I actually don’t like them or their delivery service that say they attempt to deliver when they haven’t but that’s another story.  If they tell you they might be out of stock, that might simply be to give them extra delivery days (as opposed to their advertised ‘Next Day delivery’.

I have a couple more unboxings (recorded yesterday) that I’ll be publishing some time today. Both Monsters.

Opinion: Rumors/Leaks Interpretation- No Lumia 800 For MEA/Gulf L900 Gets Special Treatment

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 01:58 PM PDT

Okay, so after the goldmine of rumors that came from Nokia KSA’a twitter account I decided to scour every tweet looking for other precious gems; it turns out that the tweet we pointed out earlier today regarding the Lumia 900′s arrival to the Gulf wasn’t the first time they’ve released that info; although it was the first confirmation of Windows 8 in October. The tweet above translates into the following:

“When will the Lumia 800 be available in KSA?”
“It won’t be launched in Saudi Arabia, we will however bring the Lumia 900 and better phones in October- god willing”

Leading to the following question, why wouldn’t the L800 be launched if the L900 will? Keep in mind that the main issue holding back the current line of WPs in the Arab world is the lack of Arabic support on WP 7.5/Mango (and even Tango/7.5 refresh); The only reasonable explanation for the discrimination between the two devices is that  one of them will be privy to more updates/support than the other (meaning the L900 will get special treatment); I did consider the fact that maybe they didn’t want two similar devices in the market confusing people- but lets be honest that was never a concern of Nokia’s, and the release of a second Lumia 610 with NFC support proves that nothing has changed from that aspect.

The fact that the Lumia 900 will be coming in October alongside other Windows 8 devices would make no sense (why release a phone with outdated software alongside the latest brand new spanking software) unless the Lumia 900 would be privy to the same software.

And of course all that is ignoring the elephant in the tweet which is obviously “The better phones to come” which can only leave our minds wandering, could it be the Lumia Pureview we’ve been dying for? Hopefully it is, but only time will tell.

Of course these are only MY PERSONAL opinions and have no solid backing; just hopes and speculations- check out a couple more questions at the source.

Nokia Number 2

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 09:03 AM PDT

As feared/suspected, Nokia is now second to Samsung as global handset sales leader for Q1 2012.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/12/has-samsung-overtaken-nokia-in-handset-sales/

Samsung sold 93.5M vs 82.7M for Nokia. That’s still shy of Nokia’s 123.7M of Q4 2010 though both Samsung and Apple have overtaken Nokia’s records for smartphone sales in one quarter.

 http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_q1_results_are_out_takes_top_spot_from_nokia-news-4171.php

Samsung had always targeted Nokia’s crown, with a date target of around 2014. Inevitably, one way or another, Samsung saw that they would overtake Nokia. In the UK at least, it was a struggle for many years with Samsung frequently snatching the top spot amongst British consumers liking their slim, curvy,  feminine designs.

Perhaps at the very least, we would have all expected that to be a brutal fight with both fighters on top form, not Nokia falling from grace. I guess it would have been the case were Samsung still fighting Nokia using Symbian, but Samsung and co attacked using Android. Nokia, perhaps, could have handled iPhones on their own, but not the Droid march, at least not with the handsets we saw. Credit where credit is due, Android at the beginning was almost like iOS but cheaper. Gradually it evolved to gain more features, packing more features, more options, ending up everywhere, with Samsung delivering, sadly for Nokia fans, quite impressive handsets that push the specs race. They’re not without problems of course, but negligible in the grand scheme of things.

14 years is a long time to have been at the top. Nokia, which once eclipsed Motorola is now in the shadows of Samsung. But it’s not over. Nokia is not out for the count.

We’ve still got the likes of the blindingly amazing Nokia 808 PureView that Samsung, Apple and co and only dream of becoming close to. There’s still much to be proud of at Nokia. There’s still work on going with gesture based SWIPE UI – at least according to rumours. We have seen glimmers at least of FP2 which, if it delivers like FP1, could be very interesting. A lot rests on the success of the extremely controversial Windows OS, for both Nokia tablets and phones, namely the 8 variety. But even that might not guarantee success for Nokia should they be outpaced by competitors who might also see something in Windows 8/Windows Phone 8 portable devices.

We need to remain calm, and have sisu (I don’t quite know how to correctly use this term since it’s Finnish)

Sisu is a Finnish term loosely translated into English as strength of will, determination, perseverance, and acting rationally in the face of adversity.

It is one plucky drama of a boot maker turned hero in mobile, king and then underdog. Once at the top, battered to the point where everyone thinks it’s game over. But not yet. We still have hope. Maybe not number 1, maybe no longer having the lead they once had, but back to producing products that many millions loved and adored, associating the Nokia name with the warm feeling of awesomeness Nokia fans must have experienced some time or another. Focus now on products, on customer satisfaction, on timely products.

Cheers KF for the tip.

Lumiappaday #164: Bonnie’s Brunch demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 08:26 AM PDT

This looks like something straight out of the Nintendo DS to me with that anime cartoony child like theme to it, and I thought it would just be a game for kids but when you get into it, it’s quite challenging/fun. The premise is to match the order very quickly (and correctly) for Bonnie’s customers. You start off slow but then it picks up as you’ll gradually need to combine different items for the customers (e.g. honey, bagel and coffee).

In the demo I got to a time attack mode, I’m not sure if there are other modes like that further along the game.  It can get a little repetitive, but then that’s the nature of these reaction style games. Bonnie’s Brunch doesn’t completely play full screen but it’s difficult to notice because of the Nokia Lumia 800′s CBD AMOLED display that melts into the bezel.

808 Pureview coming to KSA in June

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 08:21 AM PDT

Ok, somebody running the Nokia Saudi Arabia account is having a wee bit too much fun; first the Windows 8 Lumias and now a second confirmation date; this time for the Pureview 808- confirmed for a June launch in KSA

Translation:

“When will the Nokia 808 be available in the Saudi market?”
“By month #6 (june) God Willing- Do you have an imaging obsession?”

So apparently we’ve got Pureviews in June and new Windows 8 devices in October, which one will you wait for?

Nokia KSA Lets Slip- Lumia Windows 8 Device in Oct.

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 07:59 AM PDT

I love a good “leak” especially when it comes directly from Nokia’s Saudi Arabia account- who more or less confirmed that an Arabic Lumia running Windows 8 will be available in October.  It’s worth noting that the original tweet inquiry was asking about when the Lumia 900 would be available; while the reply removed the specific model- which leads me to think that he was referring to a different set of Lumia devices.

Since Google Translate is Garbage I’ll translate for you:

“Can I know when the Lumia 900 will be availble in Saudi Arabia with full Arabic Support/System for WP?”

Nokia: “Nokia LUMIA phones will be available in Saudi Arabia in month #10 with 100% full Arabic Support- running on Windows 8- God Willing.”

So there you have it. Although the local Nokia stores here in Jordan are claiming that the Lumia 800 & 900 will be officially available in June (they are available in 3rd party stores- but not through official Nokia stores as they are still awaiting Arabic support).

“Nokia Lumia Quest” in Australia by Telstra

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 05:32 AM PDT

An Australian carrier, Telstra, is running a competition starting May 7, in which clues are released to their Facebook page, regarding the location of several White Lumia 800s. These phones will be placed in 5 major cities across Australia and the competition is simple. Follow the clues, find the phone, keep it!

Not only do you get the phone, Telstra are throwing in a $50 pre-paid plan with $1000 credit and 2GB of data to get you started. Bloody sweet deal if you ask me!

More details can be found on the Telstra site.

Reader Generated: Nokia N9 overclocking at near 1.4Ghz :)!!! – part 1

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 02:20 AM PDT

lmiked shared these screenshots with us detailing experiences with overclocking the N9. It’s in two parts as this was mailed directly from the N9 and apparently there was a 5MB limit.  1350MHz seems to be the sweet spot, stable and fast. Anything above might cause problems. Note, overclock at your own risk. It is not covered in the warranty should faults arise.

Hi there,

I just wanted to let you guys know that, by using the hack mentioned here a month ago or so to overclock the N9 to 1.1Ghz and by changing a few digits and experimwnting a few times with it, I was able to overclock my N9 up to 1.392Ghz (1392Mhz).

As of last night, after experimenting several values, I set the overclock to 1.35Ghz (1350Mhz) and have been running it like that until now… No problems so far… Though, I can say that the highest stable OC value is 1.38Ghz (1380Mhz), and I was able to keep going up til 1387Mhz without problems, after which my N9 froze, and rebooted automatically… I then restarted switching OC values from 1387Mhz and went up to 1392Mhz, after that, everytime I enter that value for overclock, it just freezes and reboots.

After all this, I got the feeling that it might be possible to make it run at 1390Mhz stable enough… At 1380Mhz, it ran perfectly… Although, to be on the safe side, I set mine to 1350Mhz, and have been running it like that as I mentioned since last night, and wouldn’t recommend anyone going above that value or at least 1380Mhz, cause it isn’t that much of a diference, and it runs perfeclty, and very stable at 1350Mhz, so…

As for noticeble differences, basically it just fells smoother than usual, snappier, more reponsive, less laggy when you check for updates on notifications menu, and the transitions also seem to be smoother, the menus also, and launching apps also feels a little more responsive and faster… Although it might be my imagination haha!!

Just let me know if there is any other details you want to know.

Thanks

lmiked
