Samsung is Now the World’s Biggest Phone Seller, Surpasses Nokia for the Crown

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 04:25 PM PDT

Samsung is now officially the world’s biggest company in the phone biz, shipping the most handsets over the past months. They surpassed Nokia to achieve that, according to the figures coming in from IHS iSuppli and Strategy Analytics. It’s been a long run for Nokia, staying on top since 1998, but it’s over now…

Nokia’s sales brought it to a current market share of 22.5% in Q1 2012, while Samsung got 25.4% of the market easily in the same period. Also, the iPhone brought Apple an unthinkable 9.5% of the global market share. Nokia’s low end sales volumes couldn’t face the decline of the Symbian business and it took 14 years for Nokia to become the top name in the biz and stay on top, between 1998 and 2012, but now Samsung is at the top and who know how long they’ll stay there.

As far as smartphones go, it’s been a poor quarter for everyone, as Apple dipped 5% in Q1 2012 in comparison to Q4 2011. Samsung dropped 11%, while Nokia fell 39% and RIM 21%. LG also had a bad 3 months period, with a drop of 19% . Usually at the beginning of the year the people don’t have enough money left after the winter holidays to change their handsets, so that’s why this massive drop takes place. Samsung’s advantage over Nokia is the HUGE amount of phones it releases, covering each and every single niche of the market. Will Nokia be able to take the crown back with the aid of Windows Phone 8?

Sony Xperia LT29i Specs Leak, They Look Fantastic: 13MP Camera, Snapdragon S4 Pro

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 12:17 PM PDT

Sony is once again rumored to prepare a powerhouse of a smartphone for this summer. Dubbed Sony Xperia LT29i, this device was also known as Hayabusa and now we have some inside info on it and some pics, both of the device and photo samples taken by a camera similar with the one on the device.

The Xperia Hayabusa is supposed to debut during the summer, packing a Snapdragon S4 upgraded version, the S4 Pro, a SoC with a better GPU, plus a 13 megapixel camera with HDR capture and the best in lowlight performance. Add to that a 4.55 HD Reality Display, a 2200 mAh battery and a 7mm thin case and you’ve got a winner. Rumors say that the final branding will be the Xperia GX and the pics shown below are supposed to show us what the camera on the new Xperia can do.

Right now you’ve got the Xperia S as a pretty solid option out there, plus the Xperia U and P lower price models and Xperia Ion to give you LTE. There’s always the cheaper and midrange Xperia Sola, if you want, but we’re definitely lacking a true powerhouse…

HTC Droid Incredible 4G Coming on May 10th… Ready for a New HTC Hit?

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 07:45 AM PDT

PhoneDog seems to be sure that HTC is readying yet another handset for Verizon: the Droid Incredible 4G. An anonymous source is quoted as sure that this device is coming, but I advise you take the info with the usual grain of salt. The device has been leaking a lot lately and it may be a remote relative of the One series.

Sources say that this phone is actually a modified One S, packing a 4 inch qHD display, plastic case and LTE connectivity. Other changes include a removable battery cover and replaceable battery, something that the One Series devices didn’t provide. There will also be a version with expanded battery after the launch, something like the Droid RAZR MAXX I imagine… Also as a bonus from the One S we get a microSD card slot, to accompany the 8GB of internal storage.

The design of the handset will also be adapted to reflect the fact that it belongs to the Incredible series. Inside we find the 1.5 GHz dual core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of RAM and the 8MP camera, the same specs as the One S. Android 4.0 and HTC Sense 4.0 round up the features list, plus some bloatware, maybe… With this model ready to go and Droid RAZR HD rumored, as well as the Galaxy S III prepping for Verizon this summer will give us a wide selection of phones to choose from on the Big Red.

Samsung Galaxy S III Pictured in What Looks Like Real Image

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 02:57 AM PDT

The guys of Phone Arena have been lucky enough to get a picture of what looks like a real Samsung Galaxy S III unit. Gone are those dummy prototypes with ugly looks and now we get to see a handset with metallic rounded edges, a very elongated form factor and a physical Home button.

This model’s design also fits the sketch seen in the user manual associated to the GT-i9300 that I we saw yesterday. We have no idea if this is the real thing, so take the image with the usual grain of salt. It certainly looks like your average blurry leaked pic and doesn’t seem to be Photoshopped or anything. As you can see, this supposed Galaxy S III takes cues from the Galaxy Nexus design and also a bit from the LG Optimus LTE P936, another elongated and rounded phone.

The bezels are very thin here instantly bringing in mind the idea of an edge to edge screen. This smartphone was made longer to incorporate that big 4.7/4.8 inch screen that’s rumored to be on board. And to clear everything up, yesterday Samsung’s VP Robert Yi confirmed that the GT-i9300 will be the S III, so it’s official. I remind you that on May 3rd we’ll get an official launch event in London for the new Galaxy S model and all the mystery will be blown away.

Philips W635, a Dual SIM Smartphone With Decent Specs

Posted: 27 Apr 2012 02:35 AM PDT

In case you didn’t know, Philips is in the phone making biz and now they’ve even announced a dual SIM smartphone, the W635 model. Seen in the images below, this device has reasonable specs and I’d place it in the mid end segment. It supports 3G HSDPA connectivity and packs a 4 inch display.

Said display is a WVGA touchsreen and we’ve also got a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus on board. The Philips W635 can act as an USB modem and WiFi hotspot and it also comes with GPS and support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity. Last I heard about Philips, they were making phones with outstanding battery life, so that’s what sets them apart from rivals. Back to the dual SIM W635, this device weighs 157 grams, runs Android 2.3 and measures 11.5mm. Its CPU is a Qualcomm MSM7227A, accompanied by 512MB of storage, with 70MB available to the user.

Other specs to consider: 480 x 800 resolution, microSD card slot, WiFI, Bluetooth, USB 2.0 and a Li-Ion 1630 mAh battery that I’m sure will give you plenty of juice for about 2-3 days of usage. Sadly we have no price for this unit…
