Video: Tekken Advance Game Playback on Nokia N8 (GBA)

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 04:00 PM PDT

This is a Game Boy Advance emulator demoed on the Nokia N8. The game on the screen is Tekken Advance, complete with touch screen mapped buttons. It lags a little but it looks kinda fun. Perhaps it will be faster on the 701/808?

Lumiappaday #165: Zero demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 11:32 AM PDT

Zero is an list making app with an understated elegance about it. And it’s actually darn useful. When you start the app, you’ll be presented with a tutorial as you’re going to need to learn this first. Otherwise, you’ll be presented with a black screen.

  • Create new category – swipe up or swipe down. Depending on the swipe action, the new item will be placed either above or below previous items.
  • On that new category, swipe left to delete, swipe right to enter the category and add new items, e.g. “Shopping>*swipe right*>Banana*swipe up*chicken” etc.
  • On an item within a category, just swipe right to mark as down or left to delete.
  • To edit entries, just tap on them
  • To go back pinch inwards or the back button
  • To get settings, pinch again
  • To re-order items, pinch outwards and drag items  with the little box that appears.
  • There’s quick delete of all things marked done by pressing three fingers but that doesn’t always work for me. I prefer swiping left anyway.
It will take a little learning but once you get it, it feels very second nature and the lists do look great, just you and a list.
The live tile is very useful. It will show count all the things you have to do, presenting that as a number on screen, and when the tile flips, it will tell you how many items out of how many categories done and left to do.
There’s an option to link your skydrive to backup your lists.

#165) Zero

-when adding a new item, you can now just tap on the screen anywhere to add
-minor fixes

Coming in 1.2: online bakcup

This is Zero. The new approach to your old tasks.

Zero is a gesture based to-do list application, designed to get you in, out and back to your things. The simple gestures can be learned in just a few minutes, and after that, you won’t want to use anything else.

Don’t judge by the screenshots – this app is heavily “metro” – see it in motion here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj7JNfOqkwk

Important: the trial version does NOT save anything, but that’s the only limitation.

Rating:

Design: 9

Usability: 9

Performance: 9  1

Spontaneously deletes your list. 30-04-12. Quite a fatal bug, renders the entire app useless.

Rumours: Nokia N9 PR1.3 to bring a lot of surprises to the system, due before start of June.

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 03:42 AM PDT

Take this with a pinch of salt as it’s just a rumour. However, it’s not exactly far fetched.

http://bestmeego.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/pr-13-nokia-n9.html

It is mentioned that the Nokia N9 may get a new update before the end of June – PR1.3 with a lot of surprises to the system.

A Nokia official did previously hint this would appear soon after PR1.2, so an update is at least confirmed.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/01/17/nokia-n9-might-get-pr1-2-by-feb-29-maybe-with-pr1-3-tagging-along-and-more/

Back then it was called a ‘small but valuable’ update.

Steve Wozniak shocked, prefers Nokia Lumia 900 WP over Android, jokes that ‘Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated at MS’

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 03:27 AM PDT

Do you remember when Apple Co-Founder and all around tech/gadget geek Steve Wozniak waited at the AT&T store to get a Nokia Lumia 900?

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/13/apple-co-founder-steve-wozniak-lining-up-to-buy-nokia-lumia-900/

I was apprehensive what his response might be. Now Wozniak famously praised Android before, admitting it is better than iPhone in certain ways (which is true though people in various ‘camps’ think their phone is 100% better, which it isn’t). This shows he isn’t averse to giving credit where credit is due, and fortunately he likes WP on the Lumia 900 and shares this praise.

  • Apparently said he found some apps more beautiful on WP than on Android or iOS. That’s quite something to include the latter.
  • “Just for looks and beauty I definitely favor the Windows Phone over Android”
  • “….I’m just shocked, I haven’t seen anything yet that isn’t more beautiful than the other platforms”
  • “Intuitive and beautiful”
  • “it’s makes me feel ‘Oh my gosh, I’m with a friend not a tool’” (In regards to the animations and graphics)
  • “I just really like the experience and will be carrying the Windows Phone everywhere”

Wozniak’s favourite phone is still of course, iPhone. He’s so impressed with WP he jokes that it’s an Apple job, with Apple staff poached for the UI with possibly Steve Jobs being reincarnated at MS. Well, the Lumia 900, 800 and N9 both physical design and software is the one many prominent iPhone/Apple fans/blogs have been praising as they come closest to their ideals of premium build, premium user experience.

I did give my opinion that the Windows 7 phone had superior visual appearance and operation cues that were also more attractive. In my opinion, it sets the mark for user interface. I would recommend it over my Android phones given that it doesn't yet have the breadth of apps. I surmise that Microsoft hired someone from Apple and put money into having a role in the UI and appearance of some key apps. I also surmised that Steve Jobs might have been reincarnated at MS due to a lot of what I see and feel with this phone making me think of a lot of great Apple things.

Listening to the audio, he wants more voice control, voice text input.

Accessories: Nokia Purity HD, Cyan Monster with Nokia N9 (Huge Gallery)

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 03:00 AM PDT

So, third unboxing, second Monster for the day. This is the official Nokia Purity HD headsets, in Cyan. This arrived just as I finished recording the unboxing for the Beats, but the latter was a replacement so I had some experience with it already.

With this post, I’ll leave it as an unboxing for now, and I’ll get back to it in about a week for some real thoughts. It’s quite a bold attention grabber of a headset, especially in Blue/White/Magenta. Very comfy, very light, almost feels like you’re not wearing it at all.

Thanks Nokia Connects for the trial (I think I still called them WOM in the video ). There are 46 pictures in the gallery, but here are some I’ve selected.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpYedFTBn1U

Amazon Prices for the Nokia Purity HD varies with colour. As of today::

The packaging is very much Monster Like: Sleve on outside (with a flap) and folding cardboard box inside. Seems sturdy.

Nice case that stores the Nokia Purity HD

There’s actually a sleeve where you can pop in stuff like the extra cables.

You would find the cables in that box that says Purity HD

Now the headphones

Partnering perfectly with Cyan Nokia N9 (headphone cables with buttons don’t seem to work)

Here’s the 46 picture gallery:

The case/headphones have a curious earthy smell about them, as in it actually smells like soil for some reason.

Accessories: Monster Dr. Dre Beats Pro Unboxing/Review

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 02:44 AM PDT

Got a couple more unboxings to go today (actually filmed yesterday). This is the first of the Monster branded headphones, the ones they’re probably most known for now, Beats. These come in various ranges, with the actual headphones starting at the Solo, Studio and then Pro.

To see what the fuss is all about we have these to try. I actually had the black one only last week, but contrary to reviews it’s not quite built like a tank as one of the hinges just became really lose, flopping around like a broken arm. With the replacement we also picked the alternative ‘white’. Oddly they seem a lot more comfortable than the black one (they didn’t squeeze my ears so much). They are heavy, a lot heavier than say the BH-905 or the Purity that you’ll see in the next post.

This was meant to be more of an unboxing but I thought I’d share some more info since I’ve had a pair of these for over a week and I’d like to concentrate more on the Purity HDs next week (and possibly some Play 360s).

These can be picked up for around £160 on eBay but I’m not sure those are real.
On Amazon they retail for £279.90 (the black was previously £230)

Packaging/Box

Clean, premium looking. The sleeve houses a box that comes in either red (for the black Pros) or white which folds open to reveal the accessories.

Build/Materials:

  • Mix of metal and leather, with strong rubbery plastic for the cables, and plastic(?) for the outer cups.
  • The leather will either be all black or all white. Cables always red.
They feel solid, definitely weighty. Build wise, as mentioned I thought they would be super solid but for some reason, one of the hinges on my first pair was faulty and flopped around. I’ll get back to you on how this feels in a week. I’m even more super careful with this one now (though I already was after my error with  my first pair of BH-905).
The Beats Pro can extend to change fit for the size of your head, and they also have a hinge that allows the arms to swing.
Some people find this useful to have just one cup on an ear and the other cup bent. I have no use for this, especially since they actually bend backwards so you’d have to put the left cup on your right ear. I’m very worries that the hinge might break to quickly again. The band is in leather, thickly padded.

The cable is awesome. This is detachable to either left or right side. It is thick and tangle free. Try to bundle it into the usual pile that would cause reverse Houdini knots to spontaneously form in lesser cables causes this to spring back. The thickness is also good for durability. They’ve also attached a 6.5mm jack which can screw over the 3.5mm if you need it. This is attached by a rubbery band that you can loop around the 3.5mm jack if you wanted to take it off. There’s also a telephone cord like portion that’s quite excellent for extending and stretching the cables slightly without pulling on them.

You can attach the cable to either left or right side, and the opposite free 3.5mm becomes a line out where you can ‘daisy chain’, i.e. attaching another headphone to listen to the same song.

Appearance

They look great, certainly eye catching, if not more so simply because of the silly red b.  The two main styles available are the white and black, both with the metal cups. There is a ‘Detox’ Edition that’s mostly all black.

I’m guessing most people would opt for Beats because of their brand presence. They’re the headphones people know about, and without much experience, attribute that they’re something good to consider. Furthermore, they’re more of a fashion thing. I’m seeing a lot more bright big over-ear headphones now than the past few years when it was mostly hidden away in those earphones/in-earphones. I someone like the shape of the ‘studio’ version of these better but I do also really like this outrageous huge over ear thing. In fact, I would actually like the cups to be even bigger.

Comfort

Perhaps it’s something I got used to, but with the black ones, the first time I used them, they really hurt my ears after just an hour of using them. My ears felt warm and for very long periods, they got slightly sweaty. This primarily because the cups can’t fit around your ear if you just rest the headphones on (some other headphones can sit on your ears like a cloche)

I don’t know why, perhaps my ears have shrunk, but with this new pair, my ears sit in them better and they’re more comfy. You can still certainly tell they’re on your head unlike some other lighter headphones. When putting them on, you can kind of try to scoop your ears in so they fit inside the padded area as opposed to merely being pressed against it. I will need more time on this.

Sound

Sound quality – will need to get back to you on this too. I’m not an audiophile but I can say the sound is quite alright if you’re into hip-hop/r’n'b, bassy tracks etc, though there are other options to look into if you’re really just after a particular sound of headphones. Note, also make sure the source/output of your music is high quality, e.g. 320kbps.

Some say the bass is heavy but I’d say that even cheap in-ears have more of that rumble due to the nature of passive vacuum seal. It is quite distinct enough. Mids and highs are quite ok. The overall experience to the sound is very pleasant, though purist after sound quality first may wish to steer away. You will definitely hear some good instrument separation. I haven’t been listening through decent headphones in a while so I was really surprised to hear the same track I’ve been listening too for a while sound so different/clear.

Volume differs greatly depending on what device you plug this into. With phones I can put them to about 60-70% to cut out the surroundings without being too loud. On laptops, well, let’s say Spotify is on Max, I’d put the volume at about 5%. This will again vary. Point: sufficiently loud, especially on laptops (actually painfully loud).

They work quite nicely on both my N9/800 on identical tracks (identical bitrates to desktop). The L shape of the 3.5mm jack connector is very welcome as it bends around the device and doesn’t just stick out.

Sound Isolation/Leakage

Depending on how loud your surroundings are, these have very good passive sound isolation as they create a good enough seal around your ears (with the headbands pushing tightly to cup around your ears).

They aren’t as good in passive sound isolation as in ears that create that sound vacuum in your ears but they’re pretty good. If you try some in-ears and walk along busy traffic, it’s almost impossible to hear that though you would still hear some slight murmurs with these but none too distracting. A comment made by friends are that they can’t hear what I’m listening to, as opposed to others with over ears where there’s annoying sound leakage.

Accessories:

There is a leather bag that’s pretty much useless. I’d prefer a harder case. They don’t really fit the headphones.

There’s also a cleaning cloth and some manuals.

Nokia 808 PureView for 499EUR at HoH.de

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 02:25 AM PDT

Here is one of the more lower prices for the Nokia 808 PureView. At 499EUR that’s equivalent to only 406GBP or 661USD. I say only because there’s a lot of technology here and something as ground breaking in camera where nothing is reported to come anywhere close comes at a price.

Delivery is set to be in 4-6 weeks.

Accessories: Nokia 808 PureView Picture Frame, + Could 4K video recording be possible by 808?

Posted: 28 Apr 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Well, not really but Gerii who tipped this in pointed out that this would make a good companion for your Nokia 808 PureView as it could show the pictures from the 808 at 1:1.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/27/2979902/panasonic-nhk-145-inch-8k-plasma-display

Image via http://www.diginfo.tv/

This features an 8K screen, 7680 x 4320 or 33MP.

Now whilst 145″ might be impractical for everyday use, 8K is certainly where we’ll be heading in screen resolution. This reminds me of a post I intended to make some time ago where James Burland talked about the possibility of the Nokia 808 recording 4K video.

There’s no one quite like James Burland when it comes to speculations about technology. Whether it be about Apple or more appropriately for us, Nokia, if you’ve been following him for a while, he’s freakishly always on the money.

James, Mr B has long been passionate about mobile imaging, and for a very, very long time, Nokia has been at the forefront in driving innovation in imaging forward. Here were some links I dug up from his archive, some very, very smart speculations (well I thought I had more links but seem to have lost that draft).

On 4K video, James says it’s about Future Proofing. We’re always hearing now how some phones ‘aren’t doing 1080p’ as if it’s now a standard, but so many years ago, that would be considered crazy on a phone. If you jumped back in time to 2006, I’m sure you’d also get asked why on earth you’d consider recording 1080p or why even you’d have HD screens on a 4.5″ device. James reckons 4K displays will be the norm soon enough.

Imagine if screens would eventually have the same pixel density as the latest HD phones. That would be some insane screen (requiring some insane powering) but it wouldn’t be impossible.
