Remember this guy? Adam Giles from that N8 promo that you guys really liked (the 8 minute one giving an overview, with some nice visuals?) We later saw him at NW 2011 demoing the new WP7.5 Nokia Lumias. Here he is again doing a great job at presenting Nokia Lumia WP8.

For a Nokia Support style video, I’m very pleased with the outcome. Better than a lot of ads from Nokia in the sense of explaining features Nokia Lumia WP8 can do (although there’d be some tweaking needed before this could go as a TV ad too).

Lumia 920 and 820 Finally on Sale in Retail Stores Across India

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 08:38 AM PST

Earlier in the month Nokia India held a launch event for the 920, 820 and the 620; announcing that they would be available within the upcoming week. Anyone who prebooked a device in the past couple of days should be able to pick it up now plus the devices should be available in your local reseller (while supplies last). The Lumia 920 is priced at 38,199 Rupees and Lumia 820 at Rs 27,599. You can also buy the devices from Flipkart online (I believe that’s the largest online retailer in India?) from here:

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 08:26 AM PST

The latest #SwitchComic reminded me to check out the Fatboy Wireless charger I had sitting in my wishlist on Amazon; I was pretty surprised that the price for the black charging pillow had dropped from the hard to swallow $94 to a much more sensible (and almost cheap) $74. Snap up your own Wireless charging pillow at the link below:

Accessory Review: “The Bobine” Flexible USB Charger/Tripod (Coolest Charger EVER)

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 04:18 AM PST

DSC01422

Sure the latest rage in the smartphone world is wireless charging, but what about those of us without the Qi awesomeness, or maybe we don’t have a wireless charger…. yet. Well fear not, for I present to you what is possibly the coolest way to charge your phone without ditching the wires…The Bobine! The bobine does the impossible and combines a USB charger cable with a tripod, making what is certainly the most “interesting looking” charger I’ve ever seen.

DSC01423

The Bobine charger is a 60 cm/24 in. long Full USB to Micro-USB cable made of some flexible coiled material which allows it to hold practically any shape you give it, which is what allows the Bobine to double out as a tripod. You can (with some manipulation) get the 808 to balance properly and start recording, however the above average weight of the 808 makes it a bit difficult; and it seems almost impossible to use on the 920.

DSC01426

The Bobine can be used in both portrait and landscape mode, giving you ease of use, personally I find this great for anyone with a Symbian device or an N9 since it goes great with the always on sleeping screen, allowing you to charge it up while keeping practically everything visible at all times.

DSC01427

The trick to getting a properly propped tripod or just a desk stand is to make the loop in contact with the surface as large and flat as possible (and almost parallel to the phone)… it’s physics I guess.DSC01428

It would seem as if the Bobine would work best on phones with the Mirco-USb charger port on the bottom (and surprisingly the 920 is the only one of my phones with it there), but it does seem to work pretty well on the N9 and the 900; and while it does work on the 808 the increased weight might cause it to tip over or simply fall off with time.

DSC01433

In all honesty getting the perfect balance of the phone while connecting it to a wall charger is tricky, made even more difficult by the placement of the USB port on the top of most recent Nokia phones, but once you find the sweet spot (you’ll get the hang of it with time) it’s definitely worth it.

DSC01436

You can order the Bobine from Photojojo, one of the coolest camera oriented mobile accessories stores online, unfortunately most of their stuff is iPhone related, but there are some pretty cool universal accessories over there (plus this pretty cute camera charm , I definitely need to get myself one of those!)

The Bobine costs $30 on photojojo; but think of it as a tripod, plus a kickass charger :D

Windows Phone MarketPlace Now Supporting Uploading Multiple Versions of Apps to Marketplace (OS Version Dependent)

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 03:30 AM PST

image_5F00_196DF32F

A recent change to the Windows Phone App hub now allows developers to upload multiple different versions of a single app to the marketplace; where only a single version will be available to the user depending on his device (ie: WP7 version, WP8 version). These changes will help the developer change the app description/metadata for one version of the app without confusing users of the WP7 version (Example: enabling lock screen updates for users, screenshots about that update and changelog will only be visible to users with a compatible WP8 device and not to users on WP7).

One of the key advantages of multiple XAPs per app GUID is that you can associate different metadata, such as long description, with each XAP. [...] And you don't have to worry about your app showing up twice or end users finding the wrong version for their device. Our catalog detection will show your 7.x app to those with Windows Phone 7 devices and the 8.0 app to those with Windows Phone 8 devices.

Videos: “Lumia In Action” Ads from Nokia UK

Posted: 16 Jan 2013 03:08 AM PST

Here are a bunch of promotional videos from Nokia UK, each one showing off a specific Lumia feature (City lens, Nokia Music, Cinemagraph, LiveTiles) in detail. I guess this type of ad follows Apple’s way of having one commercial per feature (like the noise cancelling mics, Panorama, Do not disturb..etc). With Nokia’s latest strategies I get the feeling that they’re trying every possible format of ads trying to see what works, not that that’s a bad idea; but it better start working soon. (I personally like these, nothing stopping from going on TV, but they could use a bit of humor in them).

Here are a couple of videos talking about Nokia’s Xpress browser, the cloud based  service that optimises websites for your phone and cuts the data usages. The first demoes it on a rare grey Nokia Lumia 920 whilst the second focuses on Asha.

Nokia Xpress is a content discovery app that connects you to the internet in an entirely new way.

Nokia Xpress Browser moves your web experience into the fast lane — so now it’s even quicker and more affordable to surf the internet, and explore thousands of apps on your Nokia Series 40 phone.

Video: Nokia TV Ad: It’s time to #Switch — Official TV Advert – 2013

Nokia and advertising. Like water and oil.

Here’s their latest attempt, which I have to say is better than their previous attempts but still leaves me feeling “meh”.

The most popular bit of the video (as seen in comments) is being ‘flipped off’ by this dude.

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 09.55.52

I like that this video talks about the features, and shows people using them.

I don’t like that it did not really emphasise WHY those features are special over other devices. Or even why they’re special in the first place.

Did you like the advert? What was done well? What could be improved?

Cheers Viipottaja for the tip!
