Nokia to Hold Press Event on February 25th in Barcelona; Expect Good Things

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 11:04 AM PST

With MWC just around the corner Nokia has officially announced the date and time for their keynote event in Barcelona this year; the press event has been scheduled for Monday Feb 25th at 9AM (for those keeping score last years event was held on the 27th of feb; at 11ish IIRC). We’ve heard rumors and bits of what to expect this year; mainly a slimmed down version of the 920 with a new metal/aluminum body; plus another variant packing a sensor similar to the 808 (PureView Phase 3?); and possibly even a Windows RT tablet!

Whatever’s coming we’re excited!

Alternate Uses for Kids Corner on Windows Phone 8

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 10:51 AM PST

DSC01647Kids Corner is a great addition in Windows Phone 8, for those of us who might have kids at least; or maybe not? Nokia conversations posted an interesting article about alternate uses for Kids Corner which are actually very useful. As a recap of what Kids Corner actually does; it basically allows you quick access to specific games, apps, or even artists/albums to a second homescreen accessible through the lock screen.

Location

Since Kids Corner is completely flexible you can rename what you see on the lock-screen as well as the corresponding image; some of the suggestions at Nokia conversations included a Transportation corner. Where you could pin all your navigation apps in one place; which has the added benefit of giving you quick access while on the road (don’t text and drive!).
Alternatively you could use it as music centric hub, pinning your favorite artists or Nokia Mixes for quick play right from the lock screen; and trick out the wallpaper with your favorite artists album artwork.

Seeing how Nokia transport and City Lens are pretty much pointless for me in Jordan (No organized public transport; and nothing worth “exploring” with City Lens that I haven’t already seen); I opted for a different path and turned Kids Corner into a Gaming corner. True that’s pretty much the same thing as keeping a default kids corner; but I downloaded the Xbox Live wallpaper and renamed it to “Games Corner” and pinned all my games there. Now at the very least I can distract my friends (who are basically little kids) without having them ruin my tile organization on my real homescreen.

Mugen Releases 1800mAh Extended Battery For Lumia 820

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 09:25 AM PST

Earlier today we saw the first of what is hopefully many more 3rd party accessories for the latest Lumia line, in the form of the Brando battery pack for the Lumia 920; now Mugen have released their extended battery for the Lumia 820 which ups the capacity from the standard 1,620mAh to 1800. Honestly I was hoping for something larger, maybe around the 2,00mAh marker since this is only a 9% increase in battery capacity; but if you’re in the market for an extended battery you can pick one up from the link down below.

Mugen have also promised a power pack for the Lumia 920; which we should be seeing in the upcoming weeks.

Video: City Lens demoed with new Sightline and Freeze mode

City Lens just gets better and better, and in this demo you can see the sightline and freeze features. Sightline shows only what you can see, reducing the clutter by hiding the places where the view is obscured. Super hungry? Pull up City Lens, click the foody icon and see the food related places closest to you. The augmented reality labels float above the actual places. Freeze feature lets you freeze what’s on the screen, so you can continue reviewing what was in your view without having to hold the phone up in that position.

Accessories: Brando’s Battery Extension Jacket for Nokia Lumia 920

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 01:18 AM PST

SEMCG013200_02_LWe mentioned before that Mugen was going to make a battery extension jacket for the Nokia Lumia 920.

brando2

Well it appears Brando’s doing the same too, and actually has a product ready.

The case with the Nokia Lumia 920 doesn’t look that bad actually. I was expecting some hideous monstrosity but as some readers have said, it looks quite nice for this style of case  - from the front anyway (I know there are purists out there that wouldn’t dare put any case on their Nokias).

It also doubles up by having a kick stand and LED lights at the back (battery indicator). The capacity is 2200mAh, so that should at least double the life of your 920.

brando1

A question for some is will this work with induction charging. I’m not sure about the case itself, but I think it can charge the 920 through it as it’s not that thick (you do not need actual contact with a charging plate to charge your Lumia).

The best bit? it’s only about 37USD.  23.56GBP or 27.57 EUR.
