Microsoft trying to work around the Google Sync Problem by supporting CalDAV and CardDAV in Windows Phone?

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 05:15 PM PST

As you may or may not know, Google will stop supporting ActiveSync from January 30th 2013. It’s what makes Windows Phone work so flawlessly with Google Mail, Google Contacts and Google Calendar. No set up, just sign in and sync. From Jan 30th, any NEW WP users will be unable to sync said google items.

Since the December announcement, MS has apparently asked Google to extend ActiveSync support in order to push an update that would allow CalDAV and CardDAV support. Google has apparently been unresponsive (and possibly giving some middle fingers to MS, what with the kerfuffle with google Maps being blocked on WP as well as Goog-execs instructions to make a poor YouTube experience for WP).

If you can get ourself out of the Google bubble, you could always try Outlook.com.

I’m not quite sure the stance on ‘new’ WP users being affected. Does that mean if I reset my phone or log into a new phone it will still be able to sync with Google stuff, or will only phones currently logged in work and after Jan 30th, future attempts at adding Google accounts  to WP will fail?

My Dream Nokia #81: Nokia Lumia 1080 WP8 Concept

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 09:02 AM PST

Nokia_Lumia_1080_concept_1-490x257This is My Dream Nokia #81, the Nokia Lumia 1080, created by Adrian Jankowiak. So named because of the 1080p screen. It otherwise follows the fabula design, with some slight tweaks.

At 4.4″, minimal bezel on the side it makes for an almost edge to edge viewing experience. At 1080p, that creates some super fine pixels at about 500DPI.

It looks nice and slim, no? Plus there’s supposedly a 12MP PureView camera with “unbelievable low light performance” PV3? :D Possibly not in something so slim, but who knows. Interesting flash layout.

NokConv: Feature on prime-time US TV by becoming the Next App Star

NokConv are highlighting a new competition called “The Windows Phone Next App Star” where your app can make a prime time appearance on US TV – though it is open to everyone.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/01/21/feature-on-prime-time-us-tv-by-becoming-the-next-app-star/

Your app doesn’t need to be brand new just for this competition. But it must be published in at least one country at the Windows Phone Store.

You'll also need to 'opt-in', so make sure you login to do that; otherwise you'll not be entered.

Initially, the Windows Phone team will judge all the app submissions based on an equal weighting of user ratings and app quality, including your implementation of new Windows Phone 8 features, such as Live Tiles. This is to stop people cheating and getting their friends to give 5-star ratings in the hope of being picked.

The best way to ensure you're apps are chosen is to make the absolute most of what Windows Phone 8 has to offer. Create an app as rich as possible. Create a Live Tile that looks amazing on the Start screen. Utilise SkyDrive so that people can upload or download files. Or, make use of the HERE platform to provide the most accurate location experience possible.

Whatever you decide to use or create, it must run on Windows Phone 8. However, why not have it run on both Windows Phone 7.5 and 8 for extra brownie points?

The WP team then goes on to cull down the options to 64 which will then go to a public vote. There will be one winner, the App Star. Additional prizes are mentioned. These will apparently be offered ‘throughout the contest’ to encourage participation:

  •  Thousands of dollars is said to be up for grabs for those hand picked 64 developers as well as
  • Nokia Lumia 920
  • featured promotion in the Windows Phone Store
  • one-year free Dev Center subscription.

You can see the luscious Ferarri Red, the bold Electric Pikachu Yellow and the Ivory Unicorn White. These three as well as the black will be available (or already are) in India.

Screen Shot 2013-01-21 at 16.22.26The quality from Nokia’s Rich Recording capable Nokia 808 PureView always still impresses me. Just when I think the sound is fine, the 808 goes and says “actually, it’s meant to sound like this”.

HowTo: Configure Local Holiday Calendar on your Lumia (Video)

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 05:06 AM PST

wp_ss_20130121_0003

Something that has been bugging myself, as well as many of you, seems to be the fact that Windows Phone automatically displays US Holidays with no obvious way to change it. Well I have found a way, and will split it up into the PC component and the Phone component.

Note: This will require a Microsoft Account and a Google Account. Only tested on a WP8 device.

PC

First up. log into your Microsoft Account and get to the calendar. (If using Outlook UI, click drop down arrow next to Outlook, then calendar. If using Hotmail, click Hotmail then Calendar). Click the subscribe hyperlink and leave it there.

In a new tab or window, log in to your google account, and go into Calendar. Click settings gear, then Settings. Select the Calendar hyperlink below the search box, and there should be an auto-configured calendar for your country towards the bottom. Click the appropriate calendar and it will open a new page with some options to edit. There is a calendar graphic located in the centre, with three small rectangle boxes below. Right click ical, and copy the link.

We now move back to Hotmail/Outlook, and paste this into the Calendar URL box. You can name this whatever you want, but I kept it the same as Google Calendar name. Hit save. Go back to the calendar to confirm it worked. Now you can close the windows/tabs if all went according to plan.

Since a lot of people like Videos, I screen recorded without sound, what I outline above.

Nokia Lumia (or any Windows Phone )

Sync your mail for the account you just added the Calendar to. This will update the calendar entries in your phone. Now go to the Calendar app, press the … in the bottom right corner, then Settings. You should now see the new calendar in this list, and can enable it if you need to. This will allow you to have the correct holidays for your country/region appear on the lock screen.

Nokia Lumia 920 users and the snow! City Lens, Pano, Super Sensitive Screen and PureView in action.

I saw these images from Nokia Lumia 920 users on Reddit. First up, wooslers2 who went sight seeing in Oregon who couldn’t work out the name of the mountain he was looking at. Although not a city location, City lens was rather helpful on this occasion. They also shot a really beautiful panorama with their 920.

QloLJreHere’s another user, ATomiH, who likes that when it’s -20 degrees celsius, he doesn’t have to remove his gloves to use the touch screen on his Nokia Lumia 920.

Now here are a few people using the Nokia Lumia 920 to film their snow day fun! The Optical Image Stabilisation is really helping quite a bit here.

Finally some pics: here’s Jhiussaari‘s dog in the snow.
