Makerbot is probably one of the more well known 3D Printers, especially so because their 3D printers are designed to be more affordable than your regular sort.

Continuing the story about Nokia’s DIY printable Nokia Lumia 820 covers, the folks at Makerbot have actually given this a go and printed their own Nokia covers.

Description

We’ve taken the file for the Nokia Lumia 820 custom removable shell and optimized it to work with the MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer. It’s an awesome shell that fits great!

To read more about this sweet file from Nokia.

I guess if you wanted to (and knew how to), you could modify the template so it includes an optional tilt stand. For future Nokia models it could be additional attachments slots for lenses, wrist straps, tripods etc, etc.

Quick heads up: The folks of Reddit seemed rather happy with Nokia’s DIY print your own covers for the Nokia Lumia 820, pushing the story to the top page.

With Nokia bringing back splashes of colour into an otherwise dreary black/white/grey, it’s no wonder people are looking forward to the possibility of the return of the exchangeable fascia covers (Not an additional cover over your phone, but the actual shell changing). Although I guess you can even print off additional phone cases should you want to with your 3D Printer. But being able to change the actual whole back cover is even better, imo (one of the advantages over the 920).

Weekend Watch: The Nokia Lumia 920 TVC Nokia India

Here’s a TV advert from Nokia India which runs through some of the Nokia Lumia 920′s top features. It’s a little bit fast but possibly one of the better (non artsy-fartsy, vague ads) at educating consumers on what this particular Nokia product offers – especially considering it’s only 16 seconds long.

You know how much Nokia ads (and their general suckiness) agitate me, so this is a good starter. I’d like a campaign to have ads based on one particular feature only to help drive down what makes it special.

Here’s a demo of a Super Nintendo emulator on the Nokia Lumia 920.

There are some touch SNES buttons on screen. Oh the memories.

Lumiappdates: Nokia Trailers, Xbox Smartglass and Shazam.

There was an update a couple of days ago to some important apps on my Lumia (several others as well to be discussed another time when we’ve mentioned the app itself).

  • XboxSmartglass, the companion counterpart to your Xbox 360 gets an update. What does the update do? No idea.
  • Nokia Trailers, one of my favourite apps to see what’s in the cinema and what will be coming soon (setting reminders when the premiere comes) is also updated. What’s on the update? I don’t think it mentioned either.
  • Finally, Shazam got an update. I think this might be version 2.3.2 which says it has faster and more reliable tagging. Too early to tell if I’ve noticed anything.

Lumia 820 3D Printing Challenge – Share Your Design Idea For Lumia 820 Phone Case!

Posted: 19 Jan 2013 12:41 AM PST

Nokia’s own crowdsourcing site Ideasproject is holding a contest where you can share your design for Lumia 820 cover. Participating in Ideasproject challenges has been a dear hobby of mine for a while now and this challenge is particularly cool:

3D Printing is quickly becoming the next big thing in technology and we want to help you join in the fun with your own designs and ideas. This is your chance to share your design ideas for the Nokia Lumia 820. Simply share a cool design for a Nokia Lumia 820 mobile phone case.

3D printing is indeed a very cool new technology and given that Nokia recently shared their 3D printing templates for making your own Lumia 820 cover designs, we are bound to see some cool fan creations in the near future. As an absolute killer incentive for you to participate in this, designers of the five best designs will get to go to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona Feb 25th to Feb 28th and Nokia is paying.

Get cracking!
