NokConv: Nokia celebrates 100% rating on HRC’s Corporate Equality Index #LGBT

Nokia Conversations reports that Nokia are celebrating a 100% rating on HRC’s corporate equality index.

At NokConv, they say that Nokia embraces diversity. Nokia is of course always about connecting people, customers and employees alike. A 100% rating is really important to Nokia, with 2013 being the year Nokia stepped it up from previous scores of 50 and 70%.

Diversity at Nokia, or indeed any company, is beneficial for all sorts of reasons, but there is also a compelling business case.

Consider this approach:

The best way to understand customers around the world is to have a truly diverse workforce with people of different cultural or ethnic backgrounds, skills and abilities, lifestyles, generations and perspectives.

Windows 8 reaches over 60 Million licences sold

TheVerge reports that Microsoft has sold over 60 million licences of Windows 8. Not an exact reflection of users as this is the numbers sold as upgrades and OEM licences. But still apparently on the same track as W7. Whilst PC was very strong with cheap netbooks all the rage, new PC’s are fighting tablets and less of the urge to upgrade after only just moving or buying a W7 computer. On the upside, for those with recent enough purchases on W7, there is a discounted W8 upgrade which has enticed quite a lot it seems to make the early move to tiles.

I’m not too fussed on W8 myself at the moment (not much use without touch, I think but then again I’ve not really used it) but it’s success is definitely critical to assisting adoption of tiles/Metro UI, the soul of WP/WP7.5/WP8 in Nokia Lumia.

Should Nokia ever bring out the much rumoured tablet in Windows flavour, it would be good to have a receptive audience to try their bigger screened innovations.

A while back we heard a contest being run by Nokia called “the Nokia paper challenge” , the contest being that you had create a Nokia device out of RECYCLED paper only and the 3 winners would win a brand new spanking Lumia 820. Well the contest has ended and the winners have been announced, and let me say there’s some pretty amazing stuff here.

The three winning entries are shown below, but be sure to check out some of the greatest entries over here: http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/01/07/nokia-paper-challenge-the-winners/DavisPaperWinner

Nokia Purity Pro Wireless by monster Wins Innovation Award at CES

Nokia Purity Pro by Monster CES 2013 Award

The standard Purity HDs that I have are pretty darn awesome, so I can only imagine what the all new, wireless; bluetooth active noise cancelling version is like. but apparently someone out there loves it seeing how it just won an award for Innovations at CES.

"We are extremely proud of the selection of Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Headset by Monster as an honoree in the Headphones category of the 2013 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards,"said Tomi Penttila, head of Nokia Gear. "This is an acknowledgement of the innovation, excellent sound quality and superior craftsmanship that the product and the two brands stand for."

Unfortunately the Purity Pro HD is not on sale yet (what??) but will hit shelves within the month; sign me up for one in either glossy black or  a 920 matching red please.

Edit:It seems they’re available to buy on Amazon (although delivery is 1-3 Months) although it’s definitely on the pricey side at £269.99:

Nokia Factory in India Raided After Allegations of $543 Million in Unpaid Taxes

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 08:53 AM PST

Earlier today Indian authorties “raided” the Nokia factory in Chennai India with claims of 30 billion Ruppes/ 543 Million dollars; worth of tax evasion charges. Although the factory was not shut down it’s unclear how this will affect the productivity of the factory.

In response to the raid Nokia replied:

Earlier today, tax officials visited Nokia's manufacturing unit in Chennai. Nokia is fully cooperating to ensure they get the necessary information to help in their inquiry.

As a global company, Nokia consistently fields a large and steady number of tax queries, audits and assessments. Nokia's commitment to being a good corporate citizen is firm and unwavering: we always observe applicable laws and rulings in the countries where we operate. This has been a core principle of our operations in India, where Nokia has been present since 1995."

Hopefully this was all a big misunderstanding; cause it would sure suck if Nokia slid back into the red this quarter (after such promising sales) due to tax issues.

Lumia 620 Hits Chinese Stores; Priced at $320

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 08:44 AM PST

The Lumia 620; the cheapest WP8 device available has just hit Chinese retailers, appearing at TMall and 360Buy (Chinese Inline Retailers) as in stock and ready to ship. The phone is priced at 1999  yuan/320 USD; which should probably go down a bit more once the phone is officially available through carriers (in the official press release they stated it would cost $248 in some countries). The 620 is supposed to be a huge hit in China and India once it launches full throttle so we’ll wait and see how that goes.

Numbers: ~10 Million Windows Phone Devices Sold in Q4; 7 Million Lumias?

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 07:16 AM PST

DSC00828During Qualcomm’s keynote speech at CES this year; Steve Ballmer of Microsoft popped up on stage with a teasing quote on the number of WP8 sales so far; claiming that:

Ballmer says during Christmas, Windows Phone was selling five times more devices than the same period last year.

Ewan over at AllAboutWindowsPhone did some digging into those numbers and with some clever calculations (which you can read HERE) figured that the number of devices sold is somewhere between 9,519,230 and 13,263,281; so we’re gonna call it an even 10 million.

On the other hand we have a report from AdDuplex Via WinSuperSite and WMPowerUser which put Nokia at more than 70% of the Windows Phone Marketshare (in the US- stats for other countries not available yet); of course these number may be off; but assuming they’re right that would mean that Nokia have sold 70% of the ten million devices mentioned above (keep in mind that the 10 million is for both WP 7&8). Of course that’s assuming that the 70% trend applies world wide and continues into new sales and not just old ones.

The other interesting fact here is that Lumia 822 on a single carrier is outselling the Flagship HTC 8X on 2 carriers… Not bad.

AAS: Nokia N8 vs Lumia 920 PR1.1 vs Ativ S vs Nokia N9

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

lunchQuick heads up, a very nice lunch time read from AAS. A camera battle between the legendary N8, the Nokia N9 and the new Ativ S and Nokia Lumia 920.

Nokia N8 still going strong and showing how it’s done. Imagine how many more years the likes of the 808 will continue to reign (unless of course, Nokia dethrones it with something from their own labs again )

Update: Nokia Denies All Android Phone Rumors; Blame Bad Translating

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 01:29 AM PST

NokiaAndroidYesterday we posted about Elop stating “Anything is possible” about a Nokia Android phone, well apparently Gizmodo just really sucks at translating their own stories (I do take some blame for trusting them). WP Central contacted Nokia about the rumor and here is the response as well as the word for word response given by Elop:

Nokia categorically denies that what Elop said implies anything different from what he has stated over and over for months now.

Do you rule out 100% launching a smartphone based on Android in 2013?

Elop: So, the way I think about it is, in the current war on ecosystems, we are fighting with Windows Phone. That's what we're doing. Now, what we're always doing is asking, how does that evolve? What's next? What role does HTML5 play? What role does Android or other things play in the future? We're looking further into the future, but it terms of what we're bringing to market, and what we're immediately focused on, we're focused on Windows Phone.”
