You can download the app on your non-Lumia device provided you’re on the UK/US/Canadian marketplace.. or you could get a Lumia.

Starting today, Microsoft and Nokia are making the beta of Nokia Drive+, the company's turn-by-turn navigation app, available for free to all Windows Phone 8 customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Download it from the Windows Phone Store.

This is a boost for WP8 users in genera;, but a bit less to offer as a Nokia exclusive.

Software Update Available For Asha 306; Bumps It Up to V.5.93

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 09:14 AM PST

A Nokia employee over at the official Nokia Discussion forums just posted a heads-up about a new update being rolled out to Asha 306 owners:

We have started rolling out a new software update for Asha 306 (RM-767 & RM-768):  v. 5.93. Based on current information this update will be available mostly to users in Middle East, Africa, South East Asia & Pacific regions (including India) and also some users from Latin Americas. The update should be already available via Nokia Suite for many countries on the mentioned regions. FOTA update packages should (hopefully) follow later. You can find the update instructions for your phone from here.

The latest update brings some stability fixes, performance fixes and some all around general tweaking:

Key changes compared to previous 3.63/3.81 SW versions:

  • Phone software stability improvements

  • Improved display brightness and touch screen performance

  • Improved phone memory handing

  • Correction for the Taipei time zone

  • General performance and usability improvements

I was actually surprised to see that the S40 devices support over the air updates, which is quite impressive; seeing how it only became available to iOS and Windows Phone users quite recently.

Whatsapp For Symbian Updated; Brings Chat Backup Option

One of the features I’ve been campaigning for for ages on Whatsapp (no matter the version) is the option to backup your chat history. Even though the latest update to Windows Phone has kinda brought us that option (if you email it to your self); but it seems the Symbian version has pulled ahead with this option getting properly hard-coded into the app. I’m not sure exactly how the history is saved (probably on the phone locally and not on Whatsapp’s servers) but it would be great if it was saved in some sort of text file that could easily be imported onto any new device you pick up.

You can grab the updated .Sis file v2.9.3 (Build 40869) from here

Gameboy Advance Emulator Coming to Lumia soon (teaser pic on Nokia Lumia 920)

Last weekend we looked at the SNES emulator for WP, demoed on the Nokia Lumia 920.

Here’s a sneak preview of a Game Boy Advance emulator that’s said to be coming soon! It will be added to “Purple Cherry” the Gameboy Colour emulator.

The App is coming from Samuel Blanchard. Translation of his comment below by Dall0o:

I am new to the world of emulation and I did it just for fun first and foremost. GBA’s cover will release when I have the time to do it (in general during the holidays). My family and my work are my priority. Today, the application is written in C# and this is a port. Therefore, it is slower than SNES8X. GBA’s cover will be a kind of bonus of PurpleCherry. It will not be an independent app. To play, I recommend a dualcore’s phone but you can can still use a “normal” phone like a lumia 800 just for fun. To finish, GBA emulator will be inside free cover of PurpleCherry. All GBA’s game are not supported but the support of some games are very good : “Mariot Kart, Zelda Minish, Pokemon Fire,

Rumours: MWC 2013 to see 41MP Nokia Lumia 920/9XX? No tablet? 6 new Lumias

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 02:22 AM PST

UPDATE: TheVerge confirms that there is a Nokia Lumia EOS that has a similar sensor to the Nokia 808 PureView. Nokia EOS will be the higher range of Lumia, built in aluminium. The edges will be square. AT&T will have the handset later this year. Tablet due 2013, presented Q1, contrary to source below.

As MWC looms, expectations of Nokia’s new products begin to bubble into rumours.

Here’s three of the rumours, from someone supposedly reliable called “Flavio”.

  1. No Nokia tablet yet.
  2. 6 new Nokia Lumias
  3. A Nokia Lumia 920 with 41MP camera.

This could be a load of hot air but nothing completely left field (Not as much as hearing rumours about a 41MP camera in a PHONE over a year ago anyway :p). At the Nokia 808 PureView launch, we heard that if Nokia waited to put PureView pro in Lumia, they’d be delayed a year. Well, one year on, it’s quite right for users to expect the 41MP PureView (along with mahoosive sensor) to appear in a Lumia.

We already some some supposed leaked images (quite weird ones at that).

BTW, when was the new Windows Phone logo announced? I looked back at sources and it said August 2012. But this picture was available in April? (Unless they just assumed it would be identical to W8 logo).

To have a hump or not have a hump? If the rest of the phone is slim enough, and the camera blows away the competition like the 808, then for some people who want the best of the best in imaging (like 808 users) can handle that bit of extra bulge. It might not be for the peeps who want anorexic phones, but hopefully Nokia will have another product to cater for their slim needs.

Cheers  Il Principo for the tip!

Lumia with 808 like camera? Possibly OIS too? Or is that too much :D

As per TheVerge comment

Also imagine if EOS line of Lumia meant Canon partnership to use Canon lenses :D :D (On the step to replacing the DSLR)

Nokia “EOS” With 808′s Camera Sensor and Aluminum Body; Windows Phone’s “First Real Pureview” + Windows RT Tablet

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 02:11 AM PST

Sources at the Verge are reporting that the Aluminum bodied Nokia we previously heard about, which was called “Catwalk” is actually codenamed “EOS”. The EOS wil pack a sensor “Similar in size” to the 808 Pureview ( 1/1.2″) according to the rumors the EOS will be built with aluminum and have “Square edges”.

The rumor also brings up the usual tablet rumors; which last we heard would have a folding cover/keyboard/battery pack.

*Side note: EOS is Canons line of High end cameras; perhaps a partnership? (not likely but that’s what the name made me think)

Video: Surface Pro Promo, featuring Nokia Lumia 920

There’s an official ‘web’ demo for the Surface Pro, MS’s own Intel powered W8 tablet.

You can see the Nokia Lumia 920 in the video as they demo the battery charger that can be hooked up to the tablet as well charging your phone (or whatever USB powered thing you might have). Odd to see a tablet demoed in use with a charger. What is the battery life like on the Surface Pro? Well I guess the Surface Pro is meant for actual work.

NokConv: Using the SIM manager in your Dual SIM Nokia Asha 308

Posted: 23 Jan 2013 01:50 AM PST

Screen Shot 2013-01-23 at 09.45.31Nokia Conversations details below how to use the SIM manager in dual SIM Ashas like the Nokia Asha 308.

Boc Ly says managing two SIMS in one phone isn’t a hassle at all, even physically switching SIMS doesn’t require you to turn the phone off. He’s now sold on the idea of dual SIM phones (now what about Dual SIM Lumias : ) )
