LeakyLeak: Lumia 2520 Cyan Press Render

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 11:23 AM PDT

BWUMwaKCEAADvoNLess than an hour after announcing that the Lumia 2520 will come in Cyan @evleaks has delivered, with the first press render of the product.

What do you think of the bezel size? it’s not too much, especially since Windows RT uses some swiping motions from off screen right? The volume and power button placement seem a bit weird, as they’re on the far side of the device away from the headphone jack; but then again this is clearly made for landscape usage and not portait.

The design reminds me of the Lumia 720 blown up, as it seems to have the same pillowy corners, rather than the strong corners of the 920, 1020 or 900. Hopefully however the screen is also curved to match the 720, as that would be pretty awesome.

Rumor: Lumia 2520 Tablet to Launch on At&t and Verizon in November; $500

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 10:44 AM PDT

Nokia_SiriusThe folks over at WPC have some info regarding the launch dates and pricing of Nokia’s upcoming tablet. Accordingly the 2520 will first be available on At&t in early November, with Verizon availability coming later in the month around the 17th or the 18th.

The rumored pricing is said to be $500 outright (for the 32 GB version??), which isn’t too bad as that’s what the iPad sells for. Of course the Surface recently took a price cut to $350 so perhaps that is a bit much?

The 2520 is very likely to be announced this month at Nokia World Abu Dhabi (on the 22nd), so not much longer folks.

Nokia Lumia 2520 to Come in Black, White, Red & Cyan

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 10:36 AM PDT

4757color_guideAccording to @evleaks, Nokia’s upcoming Windows RT tablet, the Lumia 2520 will come in 4 colors. White, Black, Red and Cyan; we’ve already seen it leaked in both black and red, but the inclusion of cyan in the color palate is a good move in my opinion. The 900 was most popular in cyan, and although the cyan 920 wasn’t as big of a hit I’m sure a cyan tablet would look quite sick (the Surface + cyan touch cover looks awesome, so why not?).

I’m not too surprised by the lack of a yellow color, as it would be a *bit* too much at that size; but who knows? Anyone have any other color preferences? And of course the age old question that keeps us up at night, which color should I get?

Windows Phone Turns 3 Today! Happy Birthday! Now It’s Time to Evolve Please.

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 08:53 AM PDT

DSC02207I hadn’t realized that today was the day WP turned 3 years of age, until Belfiore tweeted about it. Of course back in 2010 I scoffed at WP and was too busy playing with my N8 (and trying to speed it up) to actually give it any serious thought. I remember feeling a dark sense of glee when the whole No-Do update fiasco happened and bricked multiple devices; that was when I was so far immersed in my Nokia/Symbian fanboyism that anything else was complete rubbish (very much like Nokia themselves acted).

Then Elop went WP and I got a Lumia 800, fell in love and never looked back…

1020, 920 820 2

Of course Windows Phone has come some ways since 2010, first with No-Do, then WP Mango 7,5 (when Nokia jumped in and gave it the much needed boost), and then WP 7.8 and the WP8 rebuild, then Portico/GDR1; and just last month (or yesterday if you’re an At&t subscriber) GDR2/Lumia Amber. Some of these updates were major for the OS (Mango, WP8, Amber) while others where minor and hardly changed anything. The fact remains however that Windows Phone has matured a bit, but no where near enough for a three year old.

Lumia Family

Certain things should be expected of an OS this old, and certainly no one can make the “still young” remark, and in some aspects WP has caught on. For example the apps situation is much improved, I hardly ever find myself wishing for a certain app any more (after the surge of 3rd party alternatives such as Instagraph, 6tag, 6sec, swapchat…) which gave a new breath of life into the WP ecosystem. On the other hand WP hasn’t changed much in terms of features since Mango, sure we got new tile sizes and an accent color or two along the way, but where’s the innovation?

We’ve discussed the missing features and what we want/need countless times, so I won’t go into that; but put simply WP has to step it up; GDR3 should come this month on the 1520, but god knows when older devices will get it; and 8.1 is still anyones guess.

Most importantly WP has to stop playing catchup to other OSes and start bringing in fresh new ideas, especially since NOkia won’t be around to push out awesome new features much longer. So PLEASE evolve.

Press Release NSN, Juniper Networks expand partnership to deliver new generation of mobile IP solutions

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 05:21 AM PDT

NSN

Support fast, secure broadband services at scale

Nokia Solutions and Networks, a global leader in mobile broadband, and Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today announced the expansion of their long-term partnership. The agreement now covers secure IP connectivity for high-performance mobile broadband networks via jointly-developed solutions that meet the end-to-end needs of operators.

With the introduction of LTE and LTE Advanced, IP plays an essential role in mobile broadband networks. Efficient backhaul solutions between the radio and core network are necessary to meet the low latency and high capacity requirements of LTE networks with time-sensitive applications and services. Smartphone and mobile device users are expecting high service availability, fast Internet access and clear voice quality. NSN and Juniper Networks offer solutions for enhancing quality of experience and overall customer satisfaction while guaranteeing network security.

The new solutions focus upon these four key areas essential to deliver high-performance mobile broadband:

  • Next generation mobile backhaul: for mobile operators that need to upgrade and consolidate their backhaul networks to support LTE and LTE-Advanced architecture.
  • Radio access security: to encrypt and firewall traffic coming into the mobile network over the LTE, as well as the 2G/3G radio access network.
  • Mobile Site connectivity: for operators upgrading or extending their mobile infrastructure with the latest NSN products at the controller sites and at the mobile core.
  • Carrier-grade NAT: for operators facing exhaustion of public IPv4 addresses and planning for IPv6 migration.

"Joint solution development with Juniper Networks ensures smooth network integration and high quality for our customers", said Gerhard Staudenherz, head of OEM Products Business Line at NSN. "Our end-to-end solutions based on open standards undergo thorough interoperability testing, which translates into cost savings for operators. Moreover, in addition to improving network availability and quality, our Radio Access Security solution is the market-leading 3GPP compliant solution."

"The advent of LTE means that mobile networks have become focused on the transition to IP," said David Fremaux, vice president of Strategic Alliances, Juniper Networks. "NSN and Juniper together deliver an exemplary knowledge base and experience of mobile and IP technology. These four solutions build the best platform for mobile broadband operators as they meet the huge demand for speed, connectivity and security at scale. These are the first steps in the extended partnership, which we expect to deliver network infrastructure for future generations of mobile services."

All solutions described are commercially available today. Many of NSN's leading LTE customers rely on the IP solutions NSN has developed jointly with Juniper Networks to drive their production networks.

How to easily fix the Lumia reset spinning cogs at home

Posted: 11 Oct 2013 02:44 AM PDT

Nokia’s Lumia line is still plagued with the worst bug ever, if you ever want to reset your phone, NEVER and I mean never use the reset button in the setting.

cogs

If you do reset it chances are you’ll spend the next day or so waiting on a spinning cogs animation that may or may not reset your phone successfully.

While in old days we could just flash the phone with Nokia Care Suite, now as Nokia closed its servers to our peeping eyes, our only option became to take the phone to Nokia Care Center!

I’m glad to report that Nokia updated its “Nokia Software Updater for Retail to version 4.1.0″ which added an option so direly missed: “My device does not boot up.” those of you Nokia veterans this basically dead phone flashing, this NSU is basically idiot proof.

The process goes as follows, install the NSU for retail 4.1.0 or update it if you already have it.  104MB

This only works on Windows 7 & 8.
Run NSU and this screen pops up, click on My device doesn’t boot up

NSU

Make sure your phone is charged; using a low powered USB port(PC/laptop port)

(DO NOT USE WIRELESS CHARGING or the wall charger as both will heat up the phone to dangerous degrees)

NSU1

Now that you have a fully charged phone stuck on animated cogs, Connect the phone and click continue

(I know they say disconnect it, its okay connect it anyways)

nsu4

Waiting for device connection screen comes up, press and hold the power button and the volume down button until the phone vibrates and your pc detects a new hardware, the installer will take over and will prompt you to install a hefty 1.2gb worth of firmware, after which it’ll flash the firmware and you’ll get your Lumia back to life. :)

Warning: This “MAY” void your warranty, the logic behind the voided warranty is up for debate; if your device loses connection during flashing like in case of a faulty cable, electricity outage or any other trouble you’ll brick your phone and thus Nokia can’t be held responsible for this.
SO TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Thanks for reading and I’m glad to answer any questions down bellow, but I have no idea when your updates come out so please leave that out of the comments. :)
