Three Reasons Why the Lumia 2520 Tablet is Awesome

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 10:57 AM PDT

DSC04213Without beating around the bush, the 2520 is (in my opinion) an amazing product; and although i’m not a fan of RT; here’s why for me it’s still worth a purchase.

  • The screen! What got me first was the screen of the 2520 and the amazing viewing angles, while it was being presented on stage (and pointed away from me) I could still see every detail and tile on the screen, and make out everything that was going on. Plus it’s a full HD 1080p screen with the amazing Nokia CBD technology and more.

  • The keyboard charging accessory; I never would’ve thought a single accessory could make a tablet so tempting (sure the surface’s keyboard is nice, but this is a whole different league of its own). Fully pressable keys, two full size USB ports, multiple forms to stand it up on; and most importantly 4,000 mAh of extra battery power!
  • DSC04277And finally major awesomeness points are had for the amazing form factor, the 2520 is amazing to hold in our hand, and feels very comfortable; unlike the iPad with it’s sharp corners that can dig into your palms after prolonged usage.

Check out the videos below for a look at the 2520 and it’s viewing angles, the keyboard accessory case, and a comparison against the iPad

Video: Nokia Music & Mix Radio In-Car System Concept

DSC04252Another cool Nokia Music “thingy” coming out of Nokia World was a demo of how Nokia Music and Mix Radio could work in car’s entertainment units. Nokia and Here maps already power a large amount of car’s mapping systems, so adding some in cabin entertainment isn’t too far off. Check out Dean demoing out the unit in the video below:

Video: Nokia Music and Mix Radio on Ashas + Integration into Fastlane

ec742b196a84c6249cf746de8e7b3a1cOne of the new features in the upcoming Asha touch software update is an overhaul to the music software. In the new software the default music app is now the Nokia Music store, which includes both the default player plus the amazing Nokia mix radio playlists.

The other very impressive feature is the fact that it can now be integrated into the Fastlane screen of the Ashas, for quick access and control.

Screen Test: Nokia Lumia 1520 versus Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Here’s a comparison between the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Nokia Lumia 1520′s screen – specifically for outdoor sunlight visibility. Whilst my friends on Sammy phones have to cover their screens to see in daylight, my other friends who have got Lumias don’t and here’s a demo showing this in action on the 1520.

I like how the words changed on the Note 3 when some of them became invisible to possibly reveal a message.

Perhaps going for “Lumia is Better” haha.

It’s a strange day when the Note 3 is dwarfed by the Nokia. This Lumia does however possess a 1080p 6″ display.

Nokia Camera improves 1020′s Xenon FreezeRay + Nokia Black imaging improvements (less noise)

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 04:20 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-10-24 at 12.11.23

Steve Litchfield has been delving into the Nokia Camera improvements for the Nokia Lumia 1020 specifically where the Xenon Flash in concerned.

Now it’s more intelligent. Instead of maintaining at a steady shutter speed for all situations, it now adapts so you can either let more ambient light in with some situations or less (and getting a xenon frozen shot).

Previously all shots from the 1020 were apparently at 1/30 of a second. Now they vary from 1/30/ to 1/75.  Steve notes they did not go as far as 1/125 (perhaps a brighter flash would have been needed?)

I did notice myself that colours looked a lot better and Steve agrees (and it appears it’s because of the xenon flash fix and whatever improved algorithms are in Nokia Camera).

Furthermore, Nokia Black update is said to make the camera even further as the software becomes more in tune with the 1020 hardware, leading to possibly less noise (less sharpening) and ‘more natural’ colours.

Fortunately Nokia Camera is available now so not a super long wait like Nokia Black.

(btw, since ProCam on Nokia Camera allows you to change shutter speed you modify that for really quick freezing)

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

MNB RG: New Nokia HERE interview – and what is Nokia Guru, really?

Posted: 24 Oct 2013 01:08 AM PDT

rc
Janne’s been putting pieces of a puzzle together looking into Nokia’s future focused on Location Services, which although might not include smartphones may still see Nokia devices.
_______________
Continuing the topic of what will Nokia do once D&S sale is completed. A new interview with Nokia HERE manager:

http://www.taloussanomat.fi/autot/2013/10/23/nain-nokia-aikoo-nakya-autoissa/201314774/304

Nokia has big plans in location, automotive and new kinds of software.

________________
This may be completely out of someones imagination, but a comment here says Nokia Guru has navigation with voice guidance and thus would fit Michael Halbherr’s comments on future Nokia devices after phones (http://www.iltasanomat.fi/digi/art-1288612538617.html). The comment also claims Nokia Guru had NFC payments – plus of course the music player. Now, I consider this anonymous comment too far-fetched to really be accurate. Most likely it is complete bullcrap. But it is at least an interesting mindgame as to what Michael Halbherr said and what we considered last weekend (http://mynokiablog.com/2013/10/19/mnb-rg-will-cars-soon-be-tracked-by-nokia-black-boxes-jorma-ollila-heads-a-car-tracking-taskforce/).

Could Nokia see a future in devices like these? Could Nokia enter the smartglasses game too?

Related to this, the same "tip" (aka anonymous trolling on the interwebs) also claims Nokia Treasure Tag won't transfer to Microsoft. This could of course be true or not true irrespective of the Nokia Guru claims made. If so, I wonder if they will rebrand the Treasure Tag as HERE Treasure Tag, because it includes a location element. Or will Nokia actually continue pushing some kind of a Nokia consumer brand, even while Microsoft uses the same brand for basic devices.Be the claims as they may, at least it is notable that these two expected products were not announced yesterday. If that sets them apart somehow, or if it is just an unrelated co-incidence, of course we don't know. The imagery leaked suggested that Treasure Tag was probably a part of the Lumia 1520 announcement, but was removed. Is that because Nokia now wants to announce or perhaps even re-brand it separately to avoid confusion with the Microsoft deal? Or is it just delayed or perhaps waiting for another launch date to keep the message coherent and not too convoluted. (Theoretically we could even see the Guru and Treasure Tag today, the Nokia World was marked as extending to the 23rd.)

In the end, with Michael Halbherr's claims, the discussed car tracking/car industry stuff, and an increasing buzz in the media about certain consumer product elements remaining at Nokia after the D&S sale, it will be interesting to see if there actually remains some consumer-oriented side of the new Nokia once the D&S sale is finalized – or whether it will be just infrastructure stuff and materials research/licensing. Could Nokia even continue being active as a consumer cloud-service provider beyond HERE Maps, or will all of such current efforts simply merge with Microsoft and/or go away.

If Nokia keeps "Guru" and Treasure Tag to itself, I'd expect it to align their marketing to all smartphone users much more so than their gear efforts have been before (although often they have at least mentioned some compatibility with other brands as well).

Cheers Janne!

"That's Capital Garden from the top of a hotel. Nighttime has been closed to mobile photography for so long because the sensors just couldn't handle it. Pureview and the Lumia1520 opens that up. It works so well at night, it's really incredible."

National-geographic-2

"We'd been up on this dune, and I saw this come together out of the corner of my eye. The Lumia 1520 is great because it's so fast. I just spun around and took this shot really quickly. We shot this in the evening and had great light: the golden hour – photographs are little poems made out of light. Nice guy and a great camel too."

My Dream Nokia #99: QWERTY Asha Touch

Posted: 23 Oct 2013 11:21 PM PDT

asha qwerty

We got this MDN the day after Nokia World from someone interested in having a QWERTY Asha again. Since the Asha 5xx are relatively small they could certainly accommodate a QWERTY but would it be a bit narrow?

hello my nokia blog

seeing the yesterday’s anouncment of new asha devices, although they are all really good devices and are for many price ranges, but i somehow felt they all are the same afterall. so i thought of this simple form factor of qwerty pad with the latest asha os. if nokia brings such device and prices it below asha 503 (due to the reason that i have not added 3g in it and it only has 3.2 mp camera WITHOUT flash) i.e 79- 89 $ , it would be a perfect device for many budget consumers who dont like typing on the small touchscreen keyboard of previous asha.
thanx alot
