It’s not the first time we’ve heard this but it’s interesting nevertheless to hear it mentioned once more and it what sounds like more certain terms.

It may explain why WP development is going so slowly or that might just be MS as usual. Tweeted by MSFTnerd:

  • New #rumor: Myerson has decided to slowly merge Windows RT & Windows Phone over the next two years using the thrice yearly GDR update cycle.
  • Meanwhile, big Windows will be developed in 2 separate but synced branches: Windows for SoC and Windows for datacenters (x86 and ARM) #rumor
  • Essentially, Windows ‘mobile’ will cover 4 to 7 inch displays. Windows SoC 8 to 80 inch displays. Windows datacenter for headless usage.

So is that W8 existing as one thing, but WP folds into RT and covers the smaller devices?

Some say this should have been done a long time ago. There was some other info by other insiders that said whilst this would happen, the smartphones will have their own UI.

Whatever it is, there’s a growing importance of mobile at Microsoft, as indicative of Myerson’s promotion and the acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services segment.

No more new content for Symbian and MeeGo allowed at Nokia Store. Asha still ok

Oh dear. Whilst there are no more new Symbian and MeeGo phones, updates and apps were still trickling through Nokia Store. But as of January 2014, no more new apps for Symbian or MeeGo will be allowed.

Asha and WP support will remain (with WP going to its own store as usual). After Jan 01 2014, apps will still be downloadable but there just won’t be any new ones allowed. That’s pretty much effectively killing a lot of the remaining enthusiasm for the platforms.

I guess since you can download apps from a .sis file on Symbian, any determined developer could sell independently though that would be difficult unless you’re well known (like Gravity).

Dear Nokia Developer,

With the growing business opportunities available on the Asha and Windows Phone platforms, we have been reviewing our developer content programs to see how we can maximize our support to you, our developers. As a result of this review, we have decided to focus our support and investment in new content toward Asha and Windows Phone. Over the next few months we will be transitioning our active developer support away from Symbian and MeeGo.

If you have Symbian and MeeGo content in the Nokia Store, it will continue to be available for download to customers, and you will continue to receive download and revenue reports as well as payouts for downloaded content. However, starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to publish any new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo.

We are very excited about the opportunities available with Asha and Windows Phone, and hope that you will bring your talents to these platforms. We believe that these changes will help improve our ability to support you as you develop fantastic apps for your customers.

Weekend Nokia Lol: Nokia vs iPhone Vs Samsung #indestructible

Nokia shared this 9gag image on their facebook page, perpetuating the meme of the indestructible Nokia.

Though Samsung is known for Phablet, Nokia’s expected to be bringing something even larger than the Note 3′s 5.5″ with their 6″ 1520.

Thanks Ravi for the tip!
