MS replacing WP physical back button with on screen version. Why not all the buttons!

Posted: 15 Oct 2013 11:03 AM PDT

According to TheVerge, MS is NOT removing the physical back button but instead will be replacing it with an on screen version. The back button is somewhat essential to WP’s UI (well its current state anyway). I like having that consistent back button there, though it could equally be as useful were there an on screen equivalent that’s also permanently present (versus say some other OSes where the back button could be in a myriad of places).

Interestingly, our readers are pretty much in a 50/50 split as to wanting the buttons there or to be replaced with on screen/gestures. Actually, it tips over 51% to keep the buttons there.

Another reason perhaps to remove all these buttons? Well there were some stories of MS approaching Sammy and HTCpasta about dual-boot Android/WP devices. Without, say, the WP physical buttons, it might be easier to implement completely on screen choices for Android or WP.

Physical buttons or no physical buttons, I just want something consistent.

Talk.maemo.org is alive and well and discussing the latest project that involves ressurecting and improving the Nokia N900.

The aim is to make it look and feel like the N900 but will have 1GHz/512MB RAM under the hood, 3.5G or 4G LTE support as well as a USB that won’t fall off! (N900 user will know what we’re talking about here :p)

The original post was from August (thread very much alive and kicking over 85 pages).

The Nokia N900 has a special place in the hearts of Nokia fans, so it’s no surprise to see this much support for that little beast that showed so much promise and potential for Nokia in the touch UI world. Oh Maemo.

Cheers Santeri Hiitola for the tip!

Always nice to see a simultaneous OS launch that includes Windows Phone. Here’s a trailer to the latest in the Angry Birds franchise, Angry Birds Go.

I love these CrashTeamRacing/Mario Kart style racing games. The 3D gameplay graphics look super nice.

As mentioned in the YouTube comments – next up, Angry Birds AllStars! ha.

What else would you like to see in Windows Phone? Feedback on Update 3?

Posted: 15 Oct 2013 09:19 AM PDT

DSC03980I was going to ask yesterday but what with so many actually trying out the update early, it might be worth waiting a bit till there’s some experience with the new update 3 for Windows Phone.

Essentially, “what else would you like to see in WP”. This is something we’ll have to wait now until 8.1, including the much awaited notification centre.

What other features do you feel are missing?

Speaking of Update 3 itself, what do you think of it? On paper what’s your opinion? In practice, for those who updated, how is it? Are you happy with the implementation of the current ‘new’ features? Should we tap x to close or swipe away?

The official feature suggestions hub that WP claim to be listening to is at:

Note the top one has arrived (custom text tones). The one right under it is file manager. The top rated request by those used to the raw capabilities of Symbian.

Switch to Lumia, smarter for business.

SMARTR FOR BSNS

Here’s a table from Nokia that attempts to sway business users in switching to a Nokia Lumia. Quite clearly it’s working for Nokia especially in places where Blackberry was once the enterprise device of choice.

I hope they update office soon, so that in particular, creating is a lot more functional (vs simply reading and at times, I’d like the option for it not to convert to mobile view).

In this table, whilst Nokia UK tries to differentiate itself in switching to Lumia from the other OSes, it seems to confuse Nokia Lumia with WP8. Wireless charging is not inherent to WP, but to Nokia.

Cheers all for the tip

Leakyleak: Nokia Guru – NFC Music player?

@evleaks tweets something called a Nokia Guru, supposedly the equivalent of an iPod shuffle with nfc.

Being a shuffle, does that just mean no screen?
