Windows Phone Marketplace Passes 100k Apps Mark

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 03:32 PM PDT

Microsoft is slowly approaching the level of Apple and Google when it comes to the number of modern mobile apps it offers on its very own smartphone platform. Now they’ve just reached an important landmark: 100k apps. The number was confirmed by All About Windows Phone, claiming that MS reached 100,145 apps in the Marketplace in just 20 months.

Devs may have published over 100,000 apps in the store, but only 88,371 are live right now in the Marketplace. Microsoft reached the 100,000 apps milestone faster than Android, but much slower than iOS. Android took merely 24 months to reach this milestone, while iOS needed only 16 months. What’s really impressive is that Microsoft took only 14 months to reach 50k apps and only a few more months to double the figure, an impressive achievement. The largest app category in the Windows Phone Marketplace is Entertainment, with 18,867 apps.

Next up come Tools and Productivity with 14,591 apps and Books and Reference with 12,816 apps. Games are surprisingly placed lower, with 12,212 apps and I’m surprised because they’re a vital part of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, while on Windows Phone they don’t matter that much…

HTC Desire V/VC is a Slightly Improved One V With Dual SIM Support

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 05:05 AM PDT

It appears that the series of Android 4.0 devices from HTC is getting more and more diverse, so after the One Series and Desire C model, now we uncover the Desire V, also available as the Desire VC in a slightly different version in India. This model is a dual SIM device that was announced in Ukraine and India for now.

It integrates Beats Audio, runs Android 4.0 with HTC Sense 4.0 and measures less than 9mm in thickness. Its back side has a soft touch coating and there’s a metal frame on the front side. It looks a bit like the Desire S in that aspect. The Desire V packs a 4 inch display with a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, although the source in India that detailed the phone mentioned a 480 x 960 pixel resolution, so maybe they’re different. Other features include a 1 GHz processor, 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash.

The difference between the HTC Desire V and the Desire VC is that the first supports GSM-GSM dual SIM cards, while the second GSM-CDMA cards. Also, the prices are a bit different between these models. Desire V offers a 2 year subscription to Dropbox with 25GB of storage and in Ukraine it will debut in early July 2012 in Hello stores with a cost of around $380. In August it will arrive on other networks.

Jetway Alfar 560 Motherboard Maker Prepares its First Smartphone (Video)

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 02:55 AM PDT

Jetway is a company that makes motherboards and now even they have gotten into the smartphone game, by announcing the Alfar 560 smartphone at Computex 2012. Initially rumored to be merely a clone of the Galaxy Note, this model doesn’t have anything to do with Samsung’s 5.3 inch phablet, looking more like something Huawei or LG would create. Meet the Jetway Alfar 560, a reference design for OEMs, that can be rebranded easily:

The handset is a low to midrange affair, with a 650 MHz MTK6575 processor, a 5.1 inch 800 x 480 pixel display, 512MB of RAM, Bluetooth 2.1, a 0.3MP camera at the front and a 5 megapixel one at the back. It’s also a dual SIM piece of work, with support for both WCDMA and GSM. The design is decent, we get a removable battery and the only bad thing here is how bulky this model is. It’s very likely that this model will never make it to the US, but people in Asia, Middle East or South America may get it.

Jetway announced it will ship the Alfar 560 to those regions and I suppose the price will be a very good one, most likely around $150, if I were to speculate. It’s strange to see a 5+ inch screen working in tandem with a 650 MHz processor, but we’ve seen stranger stuff…

LG LS730 Leaks, Coming in Q4 2012

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 02:43 AM PDT

The folks of Briefmobile managed to score an image of the unannounced LG LS730, a handset also codenamed Snapshot, that you can see below. The handset will come in Q4 and it sports a push Home button, a square body and metal bands running along its edge. LG Snapshot has specs that may be considered on the lower end area nowadays.

The handset comes with a 5 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, a Qualcomm chipset, 4 GB of storage, a 1700 mAh battery and a VGA front camera. Its screen supports a 800 x 480 pixel resolution and the phone measures 8.8 mm in thickness. other features include Bluetooth and WiFi and the weight can’t be disclosed at the moment. Surprisingly, this model has 768 MB of RAM, an Adreno 205 GPU and if you want 4G, you’re out of luck, since they’ll be lacking on this model.

The CPU is a MSM8655 one (single core S2) and the LG LS730 is most likely Sprint material in the near future, although it could hint Virgin or Boost Mobile as well, at some point. Taking the specs into account, this sounds very much like an L Series unit from LG. It would fit a sub $200 price tag if you ask me…

New iPhone Leak Shows New Back Cover Design (Video)

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 01:46 AM PDT

We’ve already seen iPhone 5 components, connector dock, back case and even a front panel compared to the iPhone 4S. Now straight from etradesupply comes a video that’s supposed to show us a redesigned back panel for the iPhone 5. The guy who’s analyzing the leak in the video doesn’t seem too convinced that the part he’s holding is real.

The design does match the leaked pics that we recently saw for the latest iPhone and includes a smaller dock connector at the bottom, flanked by a moved audio jack. The new back panel may be the exact same width as the one on the iPhone 4 and 4S, but it’s quite a bit taller and those images also seem to show it’s thinner, leaking us to believe that the new iPhone is slimmer than its predecessor. Here’s a list of all the main features it keeps from the iPhone 4S:  positioning on the rear camera, volume buttons and mute switch.

Also, know that the new iPhone’s rear panel is no longer made of glass, but aluminium now. The headphone jack is placed on the bottom, not the top, where the dock connector lies. That dock connector is a bit smaller than Apple’s previous 30 pin layout. The SIM is also supposed to be smaller, making us think this will end up being one of the first nano SIM devices out there. The speaker grille is larger than the microphone grille and certainly larger than speaker grilles on previous iPhones.

So, are you ready for an iPhone with nano SIM, killer speakers and more room for a bigger battery, that will provide juice for LTE?
