Symbian UI improvements project

Was just doing a round of Nokia Developer (mainly looking for any indication of PR 1.3) and stumbled across what is known as the Symbian UI Improvements project. What it is, is a community effort to bring various ideas together, regarding ways to improve Nokia Belle (most likely FP2).

Apparently Nokia is aware of the thread, as it was one of the Featured Posts recently. There are some very nice concepts, ranging from the way you unlock a device (using gestures and patterns) to subtle changes in the homescreen (such as what is pictured above).

If you have a few design suggestion you want to share, I recommend venturing over and adding your concepts and thoughts there.

N9Apps: Tweetian (QT Twitter Client) – Also avail. for Symbian

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 05:11 AM PDT

Tweetian is a new Twitter client, written in QT, available for the N9/N950 (and also Symbian devices).

It was originally written in QT for Symbian, and over the last week, the dev has ported it to MeeGo-Harmattan. I was lucky enough to be the first to try out the client, and I must admit, it is amongst the best clients out there, both on Symbian and MH.

For MeeGo, the only limitations (that are known) is that the device can’t currently upload pictures, (403 Forbidden error occurs each time), but the dev knows and is working on a fix. It’s the first release, so if you find any bugs, let the developer know on the TMO thread.

As I said, it is also available for Symbian devices. To download it, simply go to the store link at the bottom of the post. There has been an issue with passing Q&A for Belle devices, but it can be downloaded using Nokia Drop.

Take a look at the gallery below for heaps of screenshots form around the app

Lumiappaday #207: Healh Choices demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 (NHS app)

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 05:07 AM PDT

I randomly came across this app yesterday called Health Choices. It’s a NHS choices app mainly for the UK but there are aspects of it that can be useful outside the UK.

It’s really useful in finding a range of health services around you. I remember before the difficulty in actually trying to find my new GP in Manchester – even a call to the central NHS board couldn’t find it. But this app uses your location and shows you what’s around you, e.g. dentists, pharmacists, GP etc. Some practices have ratings so if you’re thinking of joining a new one, you can see which ones are rated better.

You can also look up illnesses, information derived from the NHS so quite reliable. You can see the symptoms, causes, and diagnosis. Very useful as a learning tool. There’s a button to get treatment (sorry it got cut off on the video) that will allow you to contact the appropriate people, from booking an appointment to perhaps realising that something is an emergency. There’s also a news section for health related findings.

Unfortunately this appears to be a UK only app.

This is the second app video today because yesterday’s (206) didn’t get published in time.

Weekend Watch: Nokia Asha 311 Nokia browser 2.0, youtube and keyboard.

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 03:05 AM PDT

Here’s a quick look at the browser. We looked at MyNokiaBlog.com which isn’t the quickest to load on desktop or mobile but it works quite well in this browser. (Yes, still finding ways around it). This is not using the WiFi but is on the mobile internet connection.

  • Rotating portrait to landscape pretty much instant
  • Scrolling looks quite smooth
  • YouTube videos play directly to the media player.
  • No tabbed browsing apparently (though you could just use Opera for that I guess) I did remember the adverts for the new browser mentioning some multitasking.
  • Full landscape QWERTY and apparently QWERTY in portrait or choice of T9.

Lumiappaday #206: Monster Island demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 XboxLive

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 01:51 AM PDT

Monster Island is a fantastically addicting game from Miniclip. There are unwanted visitors on your island. You have to use your arsenal of mini monster bombs to take them down. Either actually blowing them up or just getting them to fall off the map. Different bombs have different actions and the various levels change things up a little in the way you need to interact with them. Your enemies are funny too. They snigger if you miss but act scared when you get the bomb close to them.

I like the button to show you what to do if you get stuck. It’s a quality title, very well made, runs very well on my 800.

Gallery: Red Nokia 808 PureView and Finnish Nokia Social Media Girls

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 12:00 AM PDT

Here’s a large gallery with some pretty pictures of the Red Nokia 808 PureView, some in the hands of the Nokia Social Media girls. These weren’t set up, i.e. I didn’t hand them the 808 to take photos of them. They were just using it at the time and I thought it would make a nice photo. They’re more sneaky shots actually.

I don’t know what it is, but the 808 looks even better in their hands. This is Elina, the extra pair of hands seen in the Nokia 808 PureView unboxing the other day.

This is Elisa, her fingernails match the 808! I think this shot was taken by Vilja.

Anyway, as an accompaniment, here’s the Red 808 also in the usual table shots. They don’t look so nice in my hands by comparison.
