Xbox Surface Tablet Could be Announced Today by Microsoft; Specs Leaked!

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 12:50 PM PDT

There were lots of theories regarding today’s event hosted by Microsoft: a Nokia Lumia tablet being unveiled, a reference design with Win 8 on board, maybe Windows Phone 8 and now apparently an Xbox tablet is also in the mix. The event starts in about 3 hours if you’re interested and the specs of the Xbox tablet leaked online courtesy of LiveSide among others.

Dubbed Xbox Surface, the tablet packs a 7 inch 1280 x 720 pixel display, an SD card slot, 4GB of DRAM memory and 250 GB of storage. Other features include WiFi, Bluetooth a total of 12 cores of processing via the two IBM Power7 SCMs processors. Add to that 4 USB ports, Ethernet, HDMI and even a Kinect control method, maybe through a camera that will also serve for videocalls. Obviously, you should take all of the info with a grain of salt, but it does sound pretty plausible to me.

The device even supports up to 4 wireless game controllers, has one headphone port and can output video up to 1440p. Full Direct3D 11 support is on the list as well and I can only imagine the kickass gaming we’re going to get out of this slate… So, what do you think… is this real?

Samsung Galaxy S III Gets CyanogenMod 9 Nightlies

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:40 AM PDT

One may think that Samsung Galaxy S III offers everything an user needs in terms of functionality, but it’s not exactly so. While you may like the latest TouchWiz (Nature), that Samsung bundled, some people would rather go with the vanilla experience.

CyanogenMod 9 Nightlies gives you that alternative and it’s now available for Samsung’s phone. The Nightly build is the latest one and obviously you should be wary of some bugs. In the case of the current release, FM radio is not supported, using the LED lash causes problems and waking up the handset using volume keys won’t work. You can get instructions, feedback and download links over at XDA Developers.

CyanogenMod is based on the Android Open Source Project and gets contributions from people within the Android community. Right now, users on XDA are claiming that they love the new boot animation and everything looks sweet. Some of them mentioned problems with WiFi connectivity and one complained about camera force closes when trying to change the resolution and trying to take a pic with flash.

LG Optimus L5 Coming to Europe This Month

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 03:04 AM PDT

Not only HTC had a triplet announced at MWC 2012 early this year, but also LG. However theirs was a more low end-ish one than the HTC One. Thus, the LG Optimus L series came to life, including the L3, L5 and L7 models. Now it appears that the L5 is ready to hit Europe, after the L3 and L7 have been available for a while now.

This midrange device features a 4 inch HVGA touchscreen, 800 MHz processor and 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash at the back. The body seems to adopt that squared look that was also used on the LG Prada Phone 3.0 and LG Optimus Vu. This model also provides 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, a 1500 mAh battery and the latest version of LG User Experience, applied on top of Android 4.0 ICS.

Different international versions will also get extras, such as integrated NFC, for North America and Europe. Meanwhile, in Asia, CIS, Middle East, Central and South America, the handset will be a dual SIM unit. This phone measures 9.5mm in thickness and if you live in Europe know that the product arrives in the UK, France Germany this month, followed by Asia and Middle East. No price has been disclosed!

T-Mobile SGH-T699 Appears in the Wild, It’s A Galaxy S II With QWERTY Keyboard

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 02:41 AM PDT

Imagine if you took the Samsung Galaxy S II and applied to it a 720p screen instead of the 800 x 480 one and also gave it a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Well, that version exists and it’s called the T-Mobile Samsung SCH-T699.

This model will ship with Android 4.0.4 ICS and has just been pictured in the image above. It has a 5 megapixel camera, a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, that’s probably a S3 or S4 unit. What’s interesting is that the Galaxy S III is launching in 3 days on this carrier, so maybe this model will be postponed, in order not to cannibalize the newcomer.

I wonder if there are people out there willing to buy a Galaxy S II with sliding keyboard and 720p screen. People nowadays can type really fast using touchscreen keyboards and with the aid of Swype and other input methods they’re doing it even faster. Anyway, one last thing to know about the T-Mobile SGH-T699: it comes with a front camera and notification LED.
