Video: Listen to this with your eyes closed. It’s like you’re there. – Rich Recording Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:29 PM PDT Listen to this with some headphones. In ear ones preferable as they really seal off the outside sound. It gave me the shivers as it was convincing my brain I was being soaked with water. Close your eyes as you listen to it. It’s like you’re there in the car inside the car wash. It’s freaky. With Rich Recording, you get that true pure sound recording. Because it’s in stereo, you can recreate the feeling of placement and location of the sounds around you. If I ever get my hands on one of these I plan on doing more things like this. For now though there are plenty of resources already showing off exactly what the 808 can do, and more! by PureViewClub |
Lumiappaday #210: TV Guide+ demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:17 PM PDT This may be another UK useful only app sorry, but it’s one I’ve found quite useful for me. It’s a TV Guide app called TG Guide+. It’s even more useful for folks with a Sky+ subscription but even without it, it’s pretty useful. So all the content you’d have from the TV guide on your set top boxes can be seen here. You can browser the channels by categories (e.g. sport) or search for particular shows/channels. I like that you can look up series/movies. Just the rating system alone for the most popular/requested series is pretty useful for discovering something new and interesting to watch. You can select a channel as your favourite and you can then download the info from your favourite channels so you can view them offline. It could do with a little more metrofying I guess, e.g. clicking on show info. It kinda feels like the TV set top box’s TV guide just on a phone. Text may also be a little too small for some. #210) TV Guide+

Rumour: WP8 Apollo, Nokia Maps to replace Bing Maps? Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:04 PM PDT
Yesterday, WPCentral’s Daniel Rubino said in a post responding to the new iOS update that:
That’s quite a statement. I don’t want to have any expectations for June 20th as I feel I might set myself up for a disappointment. The reality of it all though is that Apollo HAS to be amazing. It HAS to be that good and Nokia HAS to be ready to deliver this phone ASAP. Daniel seems to be very confident that MS will be able to deliver more in three updates of the OS. Is that three of any update, including minor updates? Either way, it’s a big claim, stressing again that this is a ‘massive overhaul’. Well it has to be. But Daniel does give some specifics. 1) First in mapping. Nokia Maps looks to get a big boost as it will completely replace Bing. Not just in Lumia phones but in competitor phones – so the Nokia experience creeps in with them too. Good! Bing is nice and smooth and all but I never saw the point as the turn by turn directions in Bing are just stupid. Although Nokia Maps itself wasn’t that good either (Drive was the only one useful in this respect, imo).
Windows Phone userbase and market is still microscopic. The more places Nokia’s mapping solution gets to, the better. Especially since HTC are already trying to infiltrate this with their own offerings. 2) Integrated Skype. Integrated Facebook is no longer a unique thing with iOS 6. It’s a total shame that Nokia and MS preferred to shove it into your faces that the only thing that you could do was upload things to facebook quickly, never really showing the convenience of the facebook contact, calendar, gallery integration. Silly. Anyway Skype will apparently behave like a regular phone call. Like on the N9 I guess. Good. There’s other minor things, not too important right now I guess. It’s probably best we wait until the 20th to hear any more stuff. I find that it’s already a shame that we’ll hear about things from June 20th and potentially see no devices until October :/. Cheers Viipottaja and Janne for the tip! |
Gravity’s, @janole and his Nokia 808 PureView Gallery Posted: 12 Jun 2012 05:54 AM PDT
There are Nokia 808 PureView galleries popping up everywhere now. One to pay attention to is this one from @janole, creator of Gravity. Great to hear that he’s on the latest Symbian model. His gallery looks pretty awesome too. Via @Janole & @MichaelxHell |
Nokia 808 PureView detailed impression Posted: 12 Jun 2012 03:00 AM PDT Here is a nice detailed look at the Nokia 808 PureView. Original text is in German but let the translator do the work to get the gist of it. It seems to make enough sense here (sometimes it mangles translations, sometimes it’s quite readable).
The review mentions a flaw somewhere about not being able to use the front camera to take self portraits. I don’t know if that’s an error in translation but I was able to select the front camera when I had it. They seem very pleased with the camera though the translator kinda jumbled up what they were trying to say there. Thanks Dieter for the tip! |
Hyderabad Nokia Priority Store to get Nokia 808 PureView today? Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:14 AM PDT We got some info that the Nokia Priority Store, Hyderabad in India are getting some Nokia 808 PureViews today, at 3PM. It’s around 12 there now right? Anyone going to pick one up from there today? BTW isn’t today when the Finnish folk get to pick up their pre-order of the 808 from the flagship store too? Cheers Debdas for the tip. |
Video: People Made: An exhibition designed and curated by Nokia Design Posted: 12 Jun 2012 12:11 AM PDT Helsinki as you may or may not be aware is the design capital of 2012. Last Friday an exhibition started to showcase several of these new upcoming Finnish designs. On the top floor, it was all about Nokia in particular the past, present and future designs. Check out 4:17 you can see several key people in design at Nokia being filmed for an interview. It is shown three at a time where it looks like they’re speaking to each other but they’re actually recorded individually. There’s Marko Ahtisaari – a popular name amongst the Nokia fans. It looks a lot cleaner now everything got closed off into panels. I managed to check this place out during their preparation and it doesn’t look like the same place. Very cool work. by nokia |
