Nokia Lumia 900 Unboxing – Taking Out the Biggest Windows Phone Nokia (Video) Posted: 22 Jun 2012 02:03 PM PDT After reviewing the Nokia Lumia 800 and the 710, we’ve received for testing the Lumia 900, the largest Windows Phone device made by Nokia. It’s a 4.3 incher smartphone with a big box and thick allure. Last I checked, the handset was available for $100 on contract in the USA. This phone is available in black, blue, white, cyan or magenta and inside the box we find the handset wrapped in plastic, a tiny metal pin used to pull out the microSIM card slot, a bunch of manuals and the other usual accessories. These include a microUSB cable, charger and a pair of headphones that are not in-ear. At the back of the white Nokia Lumia 900 we’re reviewing there’s an 8 megapixel camera with flash and upfront we have a 4.3 inch display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution. This is a ClearBlack display and other specs include 16GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a front cam (1MP) and a single core 1.4 GHz processor. Windows Phone 7.5 is the OS of choice here and Lumia 900 is one of the phones that will get Windows Phone 7.8 as consolation for not getting WP8. It also has a Li-Ion 1830 mAh battery, that we’ll put to the test in the following days. Related posts: |
Angry Nokia Lumia 900 Owner Criticizes lack of WP8 Support, Nokia CEO Responds! Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:37 AM PDT Usually, when an angry owner of a certain gadget writes a tough letter/mail to the boss of a major tech company he doesn’t get a reply back. Well, this time when Nokia Lumia 900 owner Luke wrote to AT&T, Microsoft and Nokia, he got a response from none other than Stephen Elop, Nokia’s CEO. The problem that Luke has is the fact that he just bought a Nokia Lumia 900 and found out this week that the handset won’t get Windows Phone 8 when it arrives this fall. Microsoft announced WP8 on Wednesday and said that all current WP models are incompatible with the update, but they’ll get a special update, WP7.8, that will bring some of the features of the latest release on the older devices. Apparently, that’s not enough for Luke, who was a previous owner of a Samsung Focus, also a Windows Phone, that he had a lot of trouble with. When he finally replaced the device with the Lumia 900 he was very happy with it, in spite of the problems at first with the purple haze, IE crashes and video stuttering, but was patient enough to wait for updates. And now this… Well, Stephen Elop says that he’ll get some of the WP8 features on his device, but his response doesn’t seem at all personal, but rather a formal reply. I guess that we can now consider Luke an Android owner, since he threatened to give back the Lumia 900 and go to Verizon. Related posts: |
Sony Xperia Go Reaches the FCC, Ready for Release? Posted: 22 Jun 2012 10:07 AM PDT Merely weeks after announcing the Xperia Go, Sony brought it to the FCC, that tested the device and approved it for use on GSM and EDGE with US carriers. The 900 MHz and 2,100 MHz HSPA bands mentioned in official documents are meant for 3G all over the world, actually, so the device will debut internationally this summer. This handset is a smaller unit with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, rumored to come in Q3 and made with durability in mind. It’s water and dust resistant and comes with a 3.5 inch touchscreen display with mineral glass protection, Mobile BRAVIA Engine technology and a 5 megapixel camera. Xperia Go also has a 1 GHz dual core processor and will even support upgrades to Android 4.0 ICS. It also has GPS, measures 9.8mm in thickness and weighs 110 grams. The device will be available with Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, microUSB, DLNA and a 1305 mAh battery, good enough for 8 hours of talk time. Inside there’s also an ARM Mali 400 GPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a microSD card slot and this Sony Xperia model is also able to record 720p HD, in case you’re wondering. Good specs inside a small shell… I wonder how much this will cost. Related posts: |
Posted: 22 Jun 2012 07:14 AM PDT If you’re the lucky owner of the Motorola Droid RAZR or RAZR MAXX you have felt unlucky during the past months, while waiting so long for the Android 4.0 ICS update. The release notes for the update are now on Verizon’s website, meaning that the update is closer than ever. This news comes a day after Sony started offering Xperia S owners the Android 4.0 ICS update as well and a couple of days after Samsung published the official dates for the latest Android software’s arrival on the Galaxy Tabs. We knew that the OS was coming to Motorola as well, after seeing various soak tests confirmed all over the USA. The updates have yet to show on the two Droid RAZR versions, but it could come as soon as this weekend. Previously speculations said that June 27th was the date chosen to deliver the update for the Droid RAZR and the RAZR MAXX. Verizon will pack global roaming abilities into the software, plus some stability and performance enhancements. There’s also better mobile hotspot support, a new lock screen, that has more options, the multitasking system based on swiping apps and the apps/widgets segment with Google Play Store link. Better camera functioning and UI and resizable widgets are all here as well. Related posts: |
Microsoft Could be Working On Its Very Own Phone With WP8 Posted: 22 Jun 2012 12:34 AM PDT After creating its very own tablet, Microsoft could have gotten the taste of it and could actually be preparing its own handset as well. The Surface tablet was quite impressive when it was unveiled earlier this week, but a phone is an entirely different thing. Tablets have been cool for what, 2-3 years? However, phones have had cool aspects and top notch hardware for years now. You may remember Microsoft’s failure with the Kin phones, that were so bad they had to be swept under the rug. Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund cites industry sources and says that Microsoft will create its own branded Windows Phone device. This analysis is based on a reference device, a product used for development process only and never put into retail. If there’s any hardware maker to join MS on this one, it would have to be Nokia, but I doubt they wouldn’t want to brand their phone all over the place. Samsung, Huawei, HTC and Nokia are all WP8 partners, so one of them may be the one making the reference design. Since Google has a Nexus phone or two and soon a tablet, why wouldn’t Microsoft go the same way and launch a very specific phone, that always gets the updates early, looks different from the pack and brings something new?
