Posted: 16 Jun 2012 04:42 AM PDT Monday, June 18th is a date surrounded in mystery and with lots of interest around it. First we’ve got Microsoft with a mysterious event that some people say it’s related to a tablet, maybe a Nokia tablet and then Nokia’s event, that might just be a common one with MS. Part of the mystery has been revealed, as the photos included in this article include a photo of the Map of Hawaii and a photo of a music gear. We speculated on the launch event here, but now things are more certain. Hawaii has the area core 808 and the music gear is the Roland TR-808 controller. So, it’s clear now that the Nokia 808 PureView handset will be coming to the States on Monday, in an official announcement. This is the 41 megapixel cameraphone that everyone has been talking about ever since it was shown at MWC 2012. But where does Microsoft factor in here? Maybe the two events are separated, or maybe Microsoft wants to also launch a Windows Phone version of the PureView. How about that? And making all of this a triplet, Verizon also has an event on June 18th, meant to unveil a new type of fiber Internet/cable service, with 300 Mbps download speeds. The price will be around $200 a month with a 2 year contract and the carrier already published a teaser called “Moment of Silence”, that you can see at the end of this article. Interestingly enough, the teaser includes a kids with a tablet, so once again this makes me think about Microsoft and a potential Nokia tablet to unite all 3 events… Worst case scenario: we get PureView 808 from Nokia, Windows Phone 8 from MS and FiOS from Verizon. Best case scenario: we get the PureView, Windows Phone 8 PureView, Nokia Windows 8 tablet and all of that with some special offers from Verizon, as far as connectivity goes. Related posts: |
BlackBerry 10 New Screenshots Detail Interface Posted: 16 Jun 2012 03:37 AM PDT We’ve seen BlackBerry 10 OS leaked before in a bunch of clear screenshots and now we have more, as we prepare for the fall unveiling of the platform. Crackbery had some hands on quality time with the OS, giving users a look into RIM’s possible future, in case they don’t get bought by Microsoft or Samsung. We get to see the homescreen, the software’s icon tray, unified inbox and a new thing: the music player. This version of BlackBerry 10 OS isn’t final and it could change between now and the fall of 2012. The innovative keyboard that RIM came up with is included here and according to the people who tested it, it’s very comfortable. It has predictive text, with users being able to flick up and pick the appropriate words. As far as the Homescreen goes, the icons have a very QNX-like styling to me, but after all BB 10 is inspired by QNX. Overall, this platform looks like a major change compared to the BB 7, which is a good thing, considering that previous system wasn’t that good. RIM is expected to launch its first device in at least August 2012 with BB 10 OS on board, but it’s likely that they’ll do that later in the year. Also, keep in mind that the OS won’t come to current BlackBerry phones, so people with BB 7 will have to hold on to it forever. What do you think of the music player? I think it’s quite simple and I’m not that impressed… Related posts: |
Nokia 808 PureView Versus iPhone 4S and HTC One X: Camera Comparison (Indoor/Outdoor) Posted: 16 Jun 2012 02:56 AM PDT The lovely guys and gals of CNET did a very interesting battle of the top notch smartphones, to see which one is better when it comes to photography. They pit the Nokia 808 PureView against the iPhone 4S and HTC One X, with the result being the pictures below. This is a camera comparison that’s very interesting, especially since it shows that the One X is far behind the two other models, while the iPhone 4S is dangerously close to the PureView. The reason why the iPhone 4S was chosen here is that it’s considered one of the best smartphones when it comes to camera nowadays. In order to perform these tests, CNET shot all photos at 8 megapixels and on default settings. Nokia 808 PureView was set to capture photos at “PureView resolution” and highest quality and it had the upper hand here, thanks to the pixel overlay technology. This one makes 7 pixels on the sensor into one super pixel. Indoors the iPhone almost won the battle, capturing the best picture based on exposure when viewed on the monitor. When zoomed in for a 100% crop, the Nokia 808 had the best level of detail. Nokia 808 won this test in the end, with true color reproduction, whole the iPhone 4S had too warm colours and the One X had oversharpened images. As far as shots in action, the iPhone managed to get the colours and exposure right, while the 808 managed to get all the detail, obviously, meaning that all the water droplets were there. One X was overexposed sadly. The 808 wins again… In macro mode the iPhone did pretty well, actually better than the Nokia 808 PureView. The latter couldn’t handle the focusing distance well. The HTC One X and its imaging algorithm didn’t handle the task, resulting in a very grainy shot. The iPhone 4S stood out there. For the full batch of tests you should check out CNET’s piece, although it’s pretty clear the 808 smashes everything. Related posts: |
Posted: 16 Jun 2012 02:25 AM PDT Verizon, Nokia and Microsoft have a great event scheduled on Monday, the 18th of this month. It will take place in Los Angeles starting at 3:30 PM local time and the host of the event is Microsoft itself. This is an invitation only event, that promises to change the future of technology, or so they advertise it. Lots of speculation has appeared online in anticipation of the event. People have been talking about Windows Phone 8 being introduced, maybe a Nokia tablet, perhaps a new mapping solution from Nokia or maybe Verizon’s FiOS. As proof we have the images here, first with the date of the event and a map showing Hawaii, so it may be a mapping event after all. Some even say that there’s a clue hidden in this pic, since the code of Hawaii and that area is 808, meaning that this could be the US debut of the Nokia PureView 808. It was even believed that Microsoft would announce buying Nokia on this occasion. Another promo pic is the one below, with the DJ mixing tool, that makes us think about music. Maybe Nokia and MS finally have something better than Zune and Nokia Music, that were failures. And then there’s Verizon, with the video below, showing the incredible power of the FiOS network and its great speed. Which one will it be? We’ll find out on Monday! I tend to believe it’s maps, music and a tablet! Related posts: |
Huawei M660 is a QWERTY Candybar Phone, Ready for Launch on Cricket Posted: 16 Jun 2012 01:37 AM PDT Huawei is preparing the M660 Android model, an original portrait QWERTY monoblock device, that’s destined to reach Cricket Wireless soon. The device’s design reminds me of the Motorola Pro handset quite a bit and hopefully the “domed” keys are as comfortable as on the Moto model. This new Huawei phone uses a 3.2 inch screen, runs Android 2.3 (in spite of having those 3 capacitive buttons, that make you think of Android 4.0) and also packs a microSD card slot and a back camera without flash. The specs of the newcomer are unknown and rumor has it that it will be actually called the Huawei Ascend Q when it hits the stores. I expect 4 or 8 GB of storage on it, something like a 600 MHz or 800 MHz processor, Bluetooth, WiFi, AGPS and 3G, which are predictable features. I’m really curios regarding the screen resolution and OS customization. Think we’ll get a custom Android experience? Also, if I were to guess I’d say the battery is a 1200 – 1500 mah unit.
