Nice little overview of the Nokia Lumia 625 by Bharadwaj at fonearena in India. There’s also some comparisons at the end with the 925.

Video: Nokia Pro Cam on Nokia Lumia 620/820

In a somewhat related post to the last one that discusses double tap to wake on 720 devices and under, here are some videos showing Nokia Pro Cam on the 620, 820. Pro Cam is said to currently work on the 9xx and above only due to some hardware limitations.

If you want to, there should be a work around on how to get pro-cam, though it just might not work as well as advertised. Perhaps if Nokia just openly said that it’s there to differentiate their more premium models? Should all Lumias (WP8s) have ProCam or should it just be for the 9xx and above? (BTW I think the work around is to trick the store into thinking your handset is 9XX and above. No particular firmwares necessary).

ammad found this first video demoing pro cam on the 620.

I searched for other devices, but whilst there wasn’t one for the 720, there’s a video below showing this on the 820.

BTW, I believe there’s some sort of work around to get ProCam as non Nokia Lumias have been reported to have ProCam installed (some saying it works ok, others saying it doesn’t even start).

Weekend Watch: Double tap to wake on Nokia Lumia 520

Whilst Nokia says there’s a hardware limitation for Double Tap to Wake on Nokia Lumia 720 and under, I’ve noticed some comments from users of the Lumia 520 that mention they have double tap to wake.

One user says theirs is from AT&T. This one, I’m guessing not from AT&T, shows it off on video. It’s clearly working as advertised.

Perhaps the limitation isn’t so much the inability but the side effects?

I couldn’t find videos of double tap on the 720/620 though it doesn’t indicate one way or the other whether it’s possible or not. This video suggests technically, if you wanted that feature, it would run ok.

Double Tap to Wake Will NOT Come to Lumia 720 and Below, Flip to Silence for Everyone

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 02:50 AM PDT

DSC03434Even with the Amber update rolling out there still is some confusion as to what features will be included in it, Nokia conv has posted a helpful post detailing a lot of things about the update. Including why not everyone gets it a once, and why not everyone gets procam. Interestingly any device below the 720 benchmark (meaning all 512 MB devices – 720, 620, 625, 520, 521 etc) will NOT receive the double tap to wake feature (but will still have the glance screen), the removal of the feature has been chalked up to hardware limitations.

Many features, like 'double tap to wake up the phone', require certain hardware specifications to be available on the phone. Not all of the Lumia Amber features are compatible with all Lumia phones. For these reasons, the 'double tap to wake up the phone' feature is not supported on Lumia 720, Lumia 720T, Lumia 625, Lumia 620, Lumia 521, Lumia 520, or Lumia 520T

Nokia add that everyone will get the “flip to silence feature”  though:

'Flip to silence' on the other hand is available to all Lumia Windows Phone 8 phones so you can just mute an incoming call alert by turning the phone face down.

Regarding Nokia procam not coming to anything below the 92X series Nokia stated that this is also due to hardware limitations, although note the usage of the word “initially” meaning it might just come to the rest of the devices in the future?

Nokia Pro Camera is a high-end imaging application that requires a lot from both hardware and software. Therefore, we have initially optimized the application for the high-end Lumia smartphones, including the Lumia 920, Lumia 925 and Lumia 928.

Weekend Read: @Nokia Lumia Amber Questions answered – Amber on ALL Lumia WP8 by end of September

Posted: 31 Aug 2013 02:30 AM PDT

Whilst changelogs helps to know what you’re going to get in an update, it still leaves some questions to be answered (moreover if you haven’t received one).

NokConv have a post that answers, hopefully, most of the rest of the questions about Amber.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/08/30/lumia-amber-your-questions-answered/

My own question is where’s my update? Ali’s UK 920 has it but I’m in the UK with my own 920 from Orange/EE and I still don’t have it. It’s apparently said to appear on all handsets by September. Availability of an update is one thing; getting it to your device is another.

Why doesn't everyone get the update at once?

To ensure the software update meets our quality standards, we're running multiple tests with various country variants and operators. We make the updates available to you as soon as we complete testing. With Lumia Amber we expect to have the update arriving in all Lumia Windows Phone 8 phones by the end of September. Be patient – it's coming!

We have our own questions from Nokia as posed by the questions:

  • The 820 has similar internals to 9xx. Why no procam? Is OIS making things a bit different here?
  • Why no double tap to wake for Lumia 720, Lumia 720T, Lumia 625, Lumia 620, Lumia 521, Lumia 520, or Lumia 520T? There’s an iffy “require certain hardware specifications to be available on the phone”

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

The Telegraph on Nokia Lumia 1020′s incredible results for National Geographic, to be on Front Cover of 125th Edition

There’s some recognition outside of tech blogs on the mainstream press for the Nokia Lumia 1020 and its recent efforts with National Geographic.

The Telegraph writes about Award Winning photographer, Stephen Alvarez, who almost put the phone down at the thought of being asked to use a phone to take pictures with but then says:

But the results have been incredible. Getting these results from a smartphone, at a magazine resolution, is stunning

For those wondering if it will feature at all to their magazines, The Telegraph writes:

The pictures are on display now for a week at the National Geographic shop in Knightsbridge, London, and an image from the shoot will feature on the inside front cover of National Geographic’s 125th anniversary edition in September.

Just in time when it hits the shops for some of the rest of the world, eh? :)
