Posted: 19 Sep 2013 05:33 PM PDT Symbian had an army of fans who knew how the OS operated on a kernel level, today if you spot one of them you’ll see him telling the story of the mighty Symbian failed because of Nokia’s bad management. Or explaining how the kernel of Symbian was so good it has no almost no delay between hardware and software. ”the famous Xenon example” That extensive knowledge Symbian fans have about the OS stemmed from the open nature in which Nokia developed its products another suggested reason would be that Nokia shared this information to keep the buzz going about their announced product until launch date. “which sometimes took Years ” In truth I’m bored with this story as its been told to death but for those of you who’re new to this blog or Nokia, it doesn’t hurt to read and learn. I actually fell in love with this blog because it actually taught me how phones were made, it released me from the shackles of Hype that surround almost any other’s company product with almost 0% details on what actually goes on behind the scenes of said technologies.
This was posted on the Verge forums by a common leaker of Nokia insider stories “******” The Rise and fall of the Symbian empire. enjoy. Thanks for @FaisalBAhmed for the tip. |

Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Xperia Z1 (Honami) Posted: 19 Sep 2013 03:11 PM PDT
I saw some links to some comparisons between the new Sony Xperia Z1 and the 1020. I didn’t have a decent connection at the time so I didn’t get to see the pictures in full but that Sony orientated blog source seemed to push the Z1 as the winner (of course, no comparisons in low light, moving objects for Xenon). More recently I think Sony’s PR people, the PRetend team for make.believe supposedly posted comparisons whereby the Z1 shots are on a tripod. Well, when you’re in real life, what proportion of your shots are on a tripod? Exactly. My connection is still pretty terrible but it was enough to load up some of these pics that show that, yeah, the Z1 is admittedly a great camera phone. But it doesn’t trample the 1020 as some suggests and it doesn’t render the 1020 useless. I can’t seem to find the other links at the moment. I’m sure there were plenty of other comparisons too. (Not all the pics would even load atm for my data connection is terrible) http://www.appdisqus.com/2013/09/18/sony-xperia-z-nokia-lumia-1020-picture-comparison.html Props to sony. Good effort there, especially considering the size.

Someone give Tim Cook some new glasses: Says Nokia ‘died’ because they didn’t innovate Posted: 19 Sep 2013 12:51 PM PDT According to TheVerge, Tim Cook has been bad mouthing Nokia, saying that Nokia is a reminder to everyone that when you don’t innovate, you die. Hmmm. Nokia innovates in design (which others are openly copying, hello colourful polycarbonate iPhones), in imaging (PureView, OIS), in mapping, Nokia’s software solutions have been copied again and again (double tap to wake? Always on screen?) N9 Swipe UI was regarded as revolutionary, not to mention super sensitive screen, CBD, super sunlight readability, wireless charging (yes not first in a Nokia but they’re the ones pushing to make it popular), antenna design and network solutions. It’s not so much that Nokia didn’t innovate. The key word here is execution. Nokia has had so much potential and plenty of opportunities to break boundaries and get that to the masses, but their execution cripples that. We have to admit, Apple did bring some innovation in touch screen. But what have they been doing recently? This picture was on reddit: iPhone 5 users and how they see the iPhone 5s which has lots of things ‘borrowed’ from both Android and the flat WP. Cheers Alvester for the tip! |
Video & Gallery: Nokia Lumia 1020 Unboxing +Wireless Charging Cover Posted: 19 Sep 2013 03:55 AM PDT We’ve FINALLY gotten our hands on a Lumia 1020 fresh from Nokia, and it came in one of those awesome lens looking container thing. Check out the video below then hop down for the quick first impression and gallery. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kq7N623FSAc
In all honesty I wasn’t the biggest fan for the black 1020, I was on the fence between the yellow and white, as I thought the contrast between the camera hump and the white/yellow would look pretty cool, but the black is pretty nice as well. The big thing that struck me right away about the 1020 was how light it was (compared to the 920), it’s amazing to think all that weight comes from the charging coil (I find that hard to believe); in fact the 1020 + the wireless charging cover still don’t weigh as much as the 920. The black finish is certainly awesome though, it gives the phone a very sleek profile, that makes it feel like a special agent’s secret weapon. I still haven’t played around with the camera much so I can’t give any real thoughts on that, but I think the 808 had more lossless zoom in it? Of course there are plenty more of posts on the way, but this was just a quick first impression. Check out the gallery below for some side-by sides and comparisons. *Oh and check out the Nokia 909.1 below |
Rumor: Nokia Still Working on Android Devices Just *In Case* Posted: 19 Sep 2013 02:49 AM PDT According to some rumors/reports making the rounds on the interwebs Nokia still hasn’t given up on their Plan B, or an Android device codenamed “Mountain View”. According to the Chinese source the device was in “late prototype phase? with over 10,000 prototype units already made. However the more interesting part is the fact that Nokia have not dropped the project, in fact according to the source Foxconn (who were making the first batch) are still hard at work churning out more devices. Of course Microsoft will undoubtedly shut this project down once they take control of Nokia, provided the buyout is approved. However if by some miracle the buyout is shotdown Nokia will be a bit closer to being able to release their own Android device once their exclusivity deal ends in late 2014. *Note: the site claimed that the device is being made by the Nokia R&D labs, which as far as I gather are going to remain under Nokia’s ownership after the buyout (under the “advanced technologies” name) so that adds an interesting angle to the continued Android research. |
