Damian Dinning shares his Lumia 1020 pics, I’m in awe.

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 04:25 PM PDT

Damian Dining was the previous head of cameras and imaging of Nokia, he led the camera productions of great devices such as the Nokia N86, N8 and finally the 808.

He was and still is a great photographer and had strict principles when it came to the IQ, such as true to life colors even if it felt dull, he now works for Jaguar motors in what seems to be a different field.

Few days ago I tweeted to Damian asking him about what kind of pictures he took with his new Lumia 1020 that was sent to him by his old buddies at Nokia.

Today Damian tweeted the link for his newly updated flickr account filled with amazing pics taken using Pureview mode only (no full res pics today SORRY :D )

here’s a few that cought my eyes

Weekend LOL from Reddit: Microsoft-Nokia acquisition hilariously reenacted as a Nigerian scam mail

Sometimes, you’ve just got to laugh, eh?

This reached the front page of Reddit. It’s the Microsoft-Nokia acquisition reenacted as one of those Scam emails.

What the Lumia 1520 Phablet Really Needs

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 01:49 PM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-09-08 at 21.00.25With the launch of the Lumia 1520 phablet inching closer, we’ve seen multiple leaks of the device, press renders and a load of rumors about the specs; including a 20 Mp camera and a 1080p screen. Hardware wise the Lumia 1520 looks pretty good on paper, it looks excessively slim vs. the Sony Xperia Z; packs some proper internals, an SD card (rejoice memory expansion fans) as well as (hopefully) a killer camera. Unfortunately one major factor that affects the success of phablet devices remains unanswered, the software.

There’s no question that there’s a definite market for phablets, people are buying them; whether it’s for media consumption, larger screens for gaming; or even for reading books. The one thing most Android tablets have however (at least the successful ones) is a differentiating software feature. I haven’t followed the phablet scene much in Android, but some of the features I’ve seen include snapping apps side by side, running two apps on top of each other, great note taking apps, smart stylus support and much more.

However the rumors of GDR3 don’t seem to bring any of that, in fact feature wise it doesn’t seem to bring much that could take advantage of the larger screen short of 1080p support and more tiles. No groundbreaking features, or uses. In fact there aren’t even any whispers of proper stylus support with the upcoming phablet line-ups (HTC are rumored to be working on one as well).

Once again it seems that Microsoft might have dropped the ball on software innovations (and I doubt there’s much Nokia can do to cause a groundbreaking change in the way things are at the moment). So what can Microsoft do that doesn’t require a huge overhaul? First off landscape support is a must, with the inclusion of rotation lock in GDR3 (finally) it might already be on the way, but if not please do! (there are plenty of mockups and suggestions that make it look quite nice).

Another important thing to keep in mind (which many of you have mentioned) is preventing the start screen from getting TOO cluttered. The optimal solution would be the option of including page breaks/folders, similarly to how Windows 8 deals with its tiles (the games “folder”- which help organization without creating subfolders in the start screen).

So realistically speaking (keep in mind we’re talking about Microsoft here), what feature would you like to see in a phablet that can actually be done without drastically changing the way WP works?

Check it out. some live photos of Nokia’s phablet. It looks nice and slim!

The 6″ display seems pretty much confirmed (there was always a slight doubt it wasn’t 6″).

Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 6-inch 1080p display, 32GB of storage, and an SD slot

SD slot expansion, 6″ 1080p, GDR3, Snapdragon 800. Not bad eh :)

Lumia 620 Running Possible Blue/WP8.1 Build Spotted

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 12:08 PM PDT

axUeIJdA user on the XDA forums found the image above on an SD card; what we’re looking at is possibly a build of WP 8.1/BLue due to the fact that it doesn’t resemble the recent look of GDR3). Right away the big thing is the notifications live tile, as well as what seems to be a notifications icon on the status bar (the asterisk next to the battery level).

There also seems to be an update to the People tile, bringing in notifications from Skype, unless that’s a different app?

P.S. note the wording “Microsoft Confidential” in the background.

So what do you guys think, real or fake? and more importantly will this be part of GDR3 or 8.1?

Weekend Watch: Vodafone UK 4G ad starring Nokia Lumia 925 (with Yoda and iOS :/)

Posted: 08 Sep 2013 12:45 AM PDT

Here’s an ad from Vodafone UK that’s been running all week. It stars Yoda and the Nokia Lumia 925 (and a Sammy phone). Interesting two choices there versus all of the other options available.

On the screen we see iOS on the Nokia Lumia 925. How come? Well the video is also about Sky Sports and Spotify being available with Vodafone’s 4G. The Album Art looks a lot more prominent perhaps on the iOS version of Spotify.

What’s interesting too is that the advert is about being lost in your phone. Look at the surrounding chaos. This reminds me of earlier ads for WP (WP7) where it wasn’t about getting lost in your phone but going in and out quickly because it does the job and you could carry on with real life (it just made those other phones look more captivating though).
