64GB 41MP Nokia Lumia 1020 launched with Telefonica (02) – “with the latest Lumia phones, it feels like Nokia’s back!”

We’ve waited a while but now it’s here. The 64GB version of the Nokia Lumia 1020. Mmmm :) So much space!

http://conversations.nokia.com/2013/09/12/nokia-and-telefonica-launch-64gb-nokia-lumia-1020/

O2 have also recently launched their 4G network so on top of that beastly 41MP camera that all current reviewers are saying beats all the competition out there (forgetting of course about the 808 but that’s another story) and that iconic Lumia desig, there’s a lot going for this phone.

I can’t wait to get my hands on one to use as my main phone. As much as I love low light shots sans flash, I’ve always been a fan of the xenon. You know me and my bestie, N82/N8!

A nice quote from O2-UK, if a little more poignant due to the situation we’re in.

“There aren't many brands that people really hold in their hearts, but that's true of Nokia. And with the latest Lumia phones, it feels like they're back”

Surprise from Nokia for Friday 13th?

Nokia just tweeted that they’ve got a surprise in store on how to survive Friday the 13th. You just need to tell them how your Nokia Lumia will survive tomorrow.

We have a surprise for you tomorrow – we just need you to tell us how your #Nokia #Lumia will survive Friday the 13th :)

Tomorrow is our medics “P” pub crawl where each assigned “family” (parents/mentors and their newbie ‘kids’) have a ‘P’ theme fancy dress. Last year, P was for princess. (I decided to go as the singer, formerly known as Prince – the 808 took the photos that year).

This year, now with our own ‘kids’ we’re going as Police with another family coming as prisoners. My 920 will be providing the splash of colour, maybe matching the yellow high visibility jacket, which all the doctors I’ve been with have been noticing “ooh what’s that colourful phone that’s not an iPhone!”. Ideally I’d have the 1020 but that’s only just been available for pre-order today.

Lumia 521 & 520 Ranking #1 & 2 No-Contract Best Sellers on Amazon

f211fcaf8285f381479eb6168976e5a7There’s no doubt that the 520X’s price range is extremely attractive, so much in fact that the 521 has been the best selling no contract device for well over a month. Now though the 520 has joined the top of the list at #2 (even though it’s $20 cheaper); either way it’s great to see some form of Nokia dominance, even if it’s in the off contract entry level.

LeakyLeak: Renders of Nokia’s Windows RT Tablet and Alleged Specs

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 08:58 AM PDT

nokia-sirius

We’ve heard and seen rumors before showing off Nokia’s alleged Windows RT tablet, codenamed “Sirius”. The latest bunch comes from Winsupersite who has listed all the major specs for the tablet, as well as a new render; which matches up nicely to the red leak we saw before. According to the specs, the tablet is rocking a 6.7 Mp camera (the largest in a tablet I believe?) as well as a 10.1″ full HD screen with outdoor visibility, probably using Nokia’s CBD technology.

Codename: Sirius
Platform: Quad-core Qualcomm 8974 (ARM)
Screen: 10.1-inch, 1920 x 1080 IPS
Battery: Up to10 hours
Weight: 1.3 pounds
Thickness: .35 inches
Price: $499
Key features: 10.1-inch Full HD screen with outdoor readability, LTE, 6.7 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, unique companion experiences with Nokia apps.
Peripherals: Innovative multi-function cover with keyboard and additional battery life.

So what do you guys think? A RT tablet is definitely coming, will you be getting it?

Microsoft’s Updated Voice Command System “Cortana” to go Toe-to-Toe with Siri

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 08:49 AM PDT

Voice Search MNBMicrosoft’s current implementation of voice commands in Windows Phone is pretty weak to say the least. Tell Me doesn’t do much besides launch apps and call up your contacts, but that’s set to change in WP 8.1 when Microsoft introduced “C” the WP personal assistant (derived from the Halo game). According to the latest rumors and screenshots Cortana will be much more functional, being able to bring up weather, navigate to Home/Work, call up your significant other and more.

The big question is, will it be voiced by the same voice actor from the Halo game? (Yes please!)

Lumiappdates: 6tag, Splashtop, PDF reader and more

Posted: 12 Sep 2013 04:55 AM PDT

This is about 3 days of updates now as I’ve not managed to get a decent connection to update my apps.

6tag, the instagram approved app has an update to v1.2.2.0. It now supports multiple instagram accounts, fast video uploads, toast notifications and a cache system.

The PDF readers have been updated, both free and pro version.

For Splashtop it gets some bug fixes.

Not quite sure what thetrainline.com app is updated to.

More sources point towards September 26th Launch date for Nokia Lumia 1520 Phablet Beastie

According to @evleaks, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is due to be launched in two weeks time: September 26.

This date has been much rumoured and the location is said to be NYC. With AT&T potentially having yet another exclusive, they maybe some of the first to launch codename, “beastie” (or Bandit internally at Nokia).

The Xperia below has a 5″ screen.

Oversampling compared: Nokia Lumia 1020 vs Nokia 808 PureView – “808 unbelievably clean” -

Another excellent article from Steve Litchfield. This one will tell you all about the principles of over-sampling/pixel binning, PureView phase 1, as found on the Nokia 808 PureView first and then the Nokia Lumia 1020.

The sample above is a screenshot from Steve’s article. You can see the differences between the 1020 with the standard camera app, and then the 1020 with procam and oversampling enabled. The photo underneath, is then the 808. Note the marked differences in colour (as Lumias tend to do this now to follow trends).

Screen Shot 2013-09-12 at 08.34.49

The 808 is, as Steve says, unbelievably clean!

The Nokia 808 was something of a freak device, in that it was the last of the Symbian line and contained significant custom hardware which couldn’t be transplanted as-is into another, more current smartphone platform. This may even be the last that AAWP readers get to hear of it (for which some will be thankful!), but this focus on oversampling allows the original PureView technology a last hurrah, at least.

Given the advantages listed here, it’s tempting to ask how ‘pure’ you need a photo to be in the first place? Camera phone geeks will demand that every last pixel be perfect (and perhaps I fall into this category at times), but for most people the Lumia 1020′s 5MP JPG output will be ‘easily good enough’ and more focus will fall on how users can manipulate and share the images, tasks for which Nokia Pro Camera and Windows Phone are well suited.

And in view of this final conclusion, perhaps some tweaking of the definition of oversampling, from Nokia’s original PureView definitions, can hopefully be forgiven.

Nokia did an excellent job slimming down the form factor and cramming some extras in to the Nokia Lumia 1020. But that extra large sensor (and then that double capacitor flash as seen in a previous article) really does help.

Should Nokia/MS explore this route of larger humps or should they stick to getting more out of a smaller footprint?

Cheers Alvester for the tip!

Update: As mentioned in the comments, something to note is that the example used has the 808 on a tripod due to not having OIS. The 1020 however is handheld. The latter may be useful in more real life scenarios where you’d want a higher percentage of clearer shots without a tripod. Then again, with the 808, you have that option to push clarity so much further with a tripod.

Dual SIM Nokia Lumia 720 on the way?

@evleaks suggests a dual sim Nokia Lumia 720 may be on the way. It’s been much expected that Nokia would follow through on getting some dual SIM lumias around.

In an interview a while back, Harlow and Elop had recognized the importance of Dual SIM in markets like India, and noted that those will be coming to Lumia eventually.
