MNB RG: Jolla availability report from Finland Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:15 PM PST Jolla has come on sale at DNA operator stores today. At least these shops have been reported to have non-reserved sales as well: Helsinki Kamppi, Turku Skanssi, Lahti Holma. Likelihood is, walk into a DNA Kauppa today in Finland, you’ll get a Jolla if you want. 399 EUR and color white. Also, it seems second wave pre-orders who have selected DNA store pick-up, have received SMSes yesterday to pick them up today. Unfortunately Jolla has also finally admitted they are behind on pre-order mailings. Both first and second wave pre-orders have not yet been received by people, not even shipped in many cases. So Jolla was unable to honor their promise of honoring pre-order sequence. - Janne |
2 Million Xbox ones sold in 18 days strengthening the ecosystem Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:15 PM PST
Back in June at E3, news about how the Xbox One would handle a few things really upset a few people. It angered current fans, made PS fans happy forcing MS to make some changes. Up until that date, Xbox was one of the strong pillars for the windows ecosystem that WP (and then Nokia CEO, Elop) seemed so reliant on. Was it now torpedoing any future hopes and giving up to Sony? Xbox one was more expensive than PS4! What if they didn’t want kinect? Was anyone going to buy an Xbox One? Apparently so. 1 million were sold in 24 hours, and 2 million in 18 days. I don’t care about the ‘next gen console wars’ i.e. who will “win”. Only time will tell in a years time when things have evolved slightly. I’m only interested that ALL the platforms become viable ones. Whilst Xbox launched in 13 countries and Sony was initially limited in the first 14 days to US/Canada, the PS4 is now available in 32 countries. Xbox still on 13 markets.
What has MS really done though regarding the integration of Xbox to WP? There’s some nice things like SmartGlass perhaps, and the XboxLive achievements. Halo was neat too but I think people want much more. Especially should RT merge with WP and the handsets being so much more capable to run ‘old gen’ type games. Source: MajorNelson Via: Reddit |
Lumia 2520 Now Available Via Amazon + 3rd Party Cases and Accessories Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:11 PM PST THe Lumia 2520 is now available through everyone’s favorite online retailer, Amazon.com. The 2520 can be bought on or off contract through At&t and Verizon on the site (at the link below): The interesting part however is the wide range of tablet cases and accessories already available for the device, which is always a good sign. Of course the 2520 has a long ways to go to breach the likes of the iPad accessory market, but it’s nice to see some options out there (although for me the power keyboard accessory is the clear choice). |
Nokia Lumia: Dare to Be Different Posted: 11 Dec 2013 10:10 AM PST Nokia Deutschland just posted a new video for the Lumia lineup, daring people to be different. The ad itself is different (yet in typical Nokia fashion it doesn’t show enough of the actual phone), but it does play on the hordes of Apple followers, and invites them to think differently.
The video is actually a followup to one they released last year (also digging at apple), but which I found had a much more profound affect; check out the first video below:

5.2″ and 8.3″ Nokia Lumia Phablet and Tablet? Posted: 11 Dec 2013 08:53 AM PST
We can’t really ascertain the reliability of this, but import data suggests the following devices:
However if that’s how specs are extrapolated than what’s the RX-115 that’s a 1/3 of the RM-964? 8.3″ tablet. Full HD. Source: Zauba Via: Pocketnow Cheers prashant for the tip! |
Nokia Lumia 1020 under water – vs Go Pro Posted: 11 Dec 2013 08:45 AM PST In this video, Nokia Russia takes the Nokia Lumia 1020 under water with diver, Oleg Gavrilov. You can see how it fares against the GoPro.
Here’s some other under water videos using various cases. 1020

Whilst swimming about underwater is not really something a that relatively lot of people do with their phones, having a degree of waterproofing for day to day activities would be nice. Bring back super rugged Nokias again…erm.. |
Microsoft Considering Making WP and Windows RT License Free to get to Lower Price Points Posted: 11 Dec 2013 06:02 AM PST One reason why OEM’s prefer Android over WP is the fact that it’s provided to them free of charge from Google, meaning they don’t have to pay any licensing fees to sell an Android device (which is why it’s popular with smaller companies: Micromax, Oppo, ZTE etc.). The fact that Microsoft charge a licensing fee for their OS (be it WP or RT or Windows), leads to a huge increase in the device cost, especially for tablets and PCs when the added price of Microsoft Office is bundled on. It seems Microsoft however are considering removing their licensing structures from some versions of Windows Phone and Windows RT in the future. According to the Verge once RT and WP start to get closer (threshold update); we might see Microsoft remove their licensing fees. Instead they will rely on in-app ads and search ads to generate some of that income back (think of Kindle-Comes with ads). as well as pushing more subscription based services (such as skydrive, office and Skype). This of course should help lower the WP price-point even further; and compete against low-end Androids, which might actually be good now with the Kit-Kat update. Do you guys think in app ads and sponsored search results are worth a cheaper price point? Sound off down below. |
Video: Russian kid unboxes the Nokia Asha 501 for Nokia Russia. Survives drop ‘test’. Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:06 AM PST An interesting concept. It seems Nokia Russia have got a child to unbox the Nokia Asha 501. It certain makes the screen look rather big. Note how he drops it at the end (not sure if intentional). The swipe seems to be an easy enough concept too.

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 02:02 AM PST Remember that post about Samsung tried to NDA the guy cos his S4 caught fire? There have been far too many bad practices from Samsung (paying people to spread bad information about competitors in forums/comments, leaving bloggers behind in foreign countries after inviting them there when they refuse to be non-bias Samsung PR, doctoring benchmark results, supposedly telling NokiaUS to F themselves on twitter (though they claim that was fake) and generally their initial practice in cloning the iPhone to be seen as relevant before they became independently popular). Nokia has, as with the blogger issue, stepped in to help. Great PR move. Reddit’s certainly loving them for it. Nokia also helped out Casey Neistat when Apple stole his video and removed his name for their internal promotions. Nokia’s PR and social media people get it. Samsung should have seen the moment that guy put up his initial video. It’s nice to see these good feeling actions by Nokia crop up in the comments. And also nice to see the good old Nokia meme
And lots of general good feeling about using a Nokia, whether it’s the 1020 and it’s amazing camera or the 1520 and that big display. It makes me happy to see all of this great reactions to Nokia, but sad in a way because of where that “Nokia” name with regards to phones is headed. |
Nokia’s Hologram Augmented Reality tech featured on Vuzix M2000AR smart glasses Posted: 11 Dec 2013 01:35 AM PST A while ago, Vuzix licensed some Hologram AR tech from Nokia. Here it is on the Vuzix M2000AR. There’s a colour and monochrome version, the lighter being brighter. It runs at 720p, which appears to be equivalent to a 13″ display from a 2 feet distance. There’s a 5MP Camera on board that records 1080p, or VGA at 83FPS. The standard battery pack lasts only 2-3 hours. But an additional auxillary pack is available. The idea apparently is to overly information from a laptop or smartphone into your line of sight. Source: SlashGear Cheers Prashant for the tip! |
