Report: WP License Cost $25 per Device, $90 for RT Posted: 17 Dec 2013 11:35 AM PST Recently we’ve heard rumors that Microsoft might be planning versions of WP and Windows RT that do away with the the licensing costs, and instead make back the money by in-app ads, and pushing their bundled services such as Skydrive and Skype. Microsoft and Nokia however have never actually commented on the individual cost of each WP/RT license, making many wonder exactly how expensive/cheap each device costs to push out the door. However we at MNB can report that a source familiar with Microsoft’s licensing scheme have shared the prices of the respective licences with us. A single Windows Phone 8 license costs close to $25 per device (or £15); a Windows RT license with the Office suite (like what the Lumia 2520 would come with) costs $90 per device (or £55). Although $25 might not sound like much for a $500 device, it certainly makes a huge impact at the lower end of the spectrum, with devices such as the Lumia 520 and 525. Effectively getting rid of these licensing fees could drop the price an extra $25 without affecting the profit margins for Nokia; and seeing that the Lumia 520′s biggest selling point was its price, imagine what would happen if it were $25 cheaper. Currently Amazon are running a promotion on the Lumia 520 selling it for only $50 off contract), which could theoretically be $25 if the licensing fees were removed. Although WP8 already reached a very low price-point this price-point could still be pushed further, without compromising on the performance of the devices; provided Microsoft change their licensing strategy. Something that would benefit OEMs greatly, and make WP a more attractive choice for budget smartphones; we’ll have to wait and see if Microsoft will indeed slash their prices, but at least we know what it costs to make a WP device.

Deal Alert: Lumia 520 for only $49 Off Contract (At&t/Go-Phone) Posted: 17 Dec 2013 11:15 AM PST Amazon have a deal on the already low-low priced Lumia 520, selling it for an insane $49 off contract. The phone is the At&t/Go-Phone pre-paid version, so it might not work on other networks; but if you are an At&t user this is a must have purchase at this price. The price-drop might have something to do with the release of the Lumia 525 which refreshes the 520 with 1 Gb of ram instead of the 512 Mb in the 520. However there is no news on when and if the 525 will come to the US; in the meantime, this insanely discounted 520 is definitely your best offer. Video: Nokia Lumia 520 vs Moto G (Nokia Lumia the better value phone) Posted: 17 Dec 2013 11:05 AM PST When Nokia went with WP, they and MS said they’d push WP down to lower and lower price points (as well as up). That they did, and because of the consistent and fluid WP experience and Nokia’s expertise, this resulted in affordable entry level smartphones which were constantly praised for being inexpensive yet not feeling like a piece of poop, as was the case with cheapo-droids. The Moto G follow’s Nokia in putting in some great internals for a really great value. The 520 can be found in some places for as little as 50USD! Moto G is about 179USD. Quite different price ranges but possibly targetting more similar consumers (much better comparison than say, CNET who compared the 520 with an iPhone :/ thinking unlocked price was equal to iPhone contract price). In conclusion, PocketNow finds the Lumia as the better value.

TC: “Why MS was forced to buy Nokia’s D&S” Posted: 17 Dec 2013 10:56 AM PST
An ‘interesting’ story from TechCrunch on why they believe MS was forced to buy Nokia. It’s been mentioned in discussions before as one of the reasons, which seemingly has appeared only recently to the author at TC (original story is only 5 hours old, I thought this might have been from September). Since Nokia has over 90% share of WP, Lumia is a more popular brand than WP and Nokia has special privileges other manufacturers don’t (thus MS do not have full control). It’s not mentioned but general conclusion is that the WP is pretty much Lumia and Lumia is Nokia. What if Nokia Lumia were suddenly go add an Android handset or worse, go Android only? WP goes back to being dead like it was before Nokia joined. There’s of course more to this story. It’s not simply a case of MS wanting to buy stuff and they end up with it, but also the seller being in a position where they need to sell or can’t refuse to. And there’s other reasons for MS too. Nokia UK ad brings back the mullet – Nokia Lumia 2520, for work and play. Posted: 17 Dec 2013 10:36 AM PST Business at the front, party at the back. The classic and forgotten mullet hairstyle returns for Nokia’s ad for the Nokia Lumia 2520. There’s a dark old style to the promo with a guy going into a classic barbers. He’s offered various hairstyles and opts for ‘something a little different’ with the mullet.

Subway Surfers Finally Lands on WP Posted: 17 Dec 2013 09:43 AM PST The once super popular running game, Subway Surfers that was a hit game on Android and iOS a while back (it still is quite popular, but it’s not the freshest the mobile gaming world has to offer). The game has finally graced the windows Phone marketplace, bringing you your subway jumping, Santa evading fun. Currently Subway surfer is only available for 1Gb ram devices, however Joe Belfiore tweeted that support for 512 Mb ram devices is on the way, in the mean time if you have a Lumia 525 or anything above the 820 enjoy the game, which for what it’s worth runs super smoothly (even better than it does on my HTC One).
The game can be downloaded for free from the link below: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/subway-surfers/bedff828-2697-4cc5-8661-1206d15e3e0c Thanks for the tip Alvester |
Jolla Other Half Hacked To Have Wireless Charging Posted: 17 Dec 2013 05:54 AM PST Jonni has managed to hack his Jolla’s Other Half, in a way that adds wireless charging. In the picture above, you can see it featured with the Nokia Fatboy Charging Pillow, with the UI showing that charging is taking place. He has posted to TMO about how he has acheived this, so if you’re feeling adventurous with your new Sailfish device, read on to find out how you can get this functionality too! http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?p=1397595 Its fairly straight forward an involves purchasing an induction charging coil, mounting it to the housing and connecting it. It is the first “prototype” and Jonni has stated that he believes that wireless charging can be made more efficient by finding a coil that supports the 1000mAh limit of the device’s charging pins. We’ll keep an eye on this and let you know how it develops! |
