The Lumia 1020 is the latest guest star on Arrow.

Arrow is a cheesy superhero TV show about the Green Arrow, it also happens to be the longest running Microsoft advertisement (in a way), the show constantly features Microsoft products; the Lumia 920, Surface, Lenovo and Windows 8 all guest starred.

On the last episode a kid used the Lumia 1020 to take a picture of a dead body, and I must say the Lumia 1020 camera hump is iconic and can be spotted from miles away, its great to have such a defining visual characteristic on a flagship phone.

Its sad they didn’t showcase the zoom capability however its still good to see Lumias all over the place nowadays.

Happy Independence Day Finland! Kippis! Hyvää syntymäpäivää!

FINLAND

It’s Finland’s Independence Day. Reddit front page is celebrating. Shots of Jaloviina and salmiakki all around. Kippis!

We got to know Finland because of Nokia and now come to appreciate Finland and the Finns as much as Nokia itself.

Somewhat connected, I saw this video this morning – how to make small talk in Finland. I thought it was interesting as usually whenever Finland is mentioned, Nokia isn’t far behind. I think the actual creators are from Finland.

Nokia: Teams That Flow: Why we work better in teams (free eBook)

Screen Shot 2013-12-06 at 12.33.35An interesting non-direct Nokia video but it’s actually quite useful in general day to day life to consider the importance of team work, either in your own environment or at Nokia. In the eBook, you can see examples within Nokia or their partners (e.g. Toyota/HERE). As a medical student, I’ve found it useful for portfolio ‘reflective pieces’ and assessing what makes a medical team work well together.

Michelangelo didn’t paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel alone. Thomas Edison didn’t invent the lightbulb by himself. Even Samuel Morse didn’t invent the telegraph on his own. They all had help.

More often than not, genius emerges from teams, and when teams flow the results are greater than the sum of their parts. In this video we look at why teams can help you work better, and how you can make sure your team flows.

Video: Nokia Lumia 1520 UK Unboxing with Clove

Here’s a UK unboxing of the Nokia Lumia 1520. Note that whilst they say this is the ‘first’ expandable memory on a  Nokia lumia, we shouldn’t forget the 820, 810, 822, 720, 620, and 520. They do correct and say all previous ‘high end’ lumias haven’t had that. (Is 8xx high end? Moderate-high at the time?).

This is a 32GB version WITH wireless charging.

Here’s a video from Nokia France showing off in subtle real life situations some of the features of the Nokia Lumia 1520. Note how it starts with the camera and super sensitive screen (note the gloves. Is this too subtle?).

My French is patchy so I can’t comment on what’s being said (Je suis désolé, mademoiselle Rio :/).

You can see them demo the GPS, Nokia Storyteller as well as the inbuilt wireless charging that isn’t present on the AT&T 1520.

Sir Philip Green, one of Britain’s richest men, prefers his Nokia

Taloussanomat reports that Sir Philip Green, one of the richest men in Britain, celebrating homes around the world, yachts, and supermodels loves his Nokia, in particular the 6310. I remember this as being a hit amongst business folks.

At the surgical theatres last week, one of the surgeons was saying how he would never part with his keypad Nokia (and oddly noted that he wouldn’t get a BlackBerry either and even mentioned that BB was dying).

As a busy man, he likes that his 6310 has a long battery life, has never broken and doesn’t interrupt him with emails, allowing him to focus on more important things.

The Irish Prime Minister was apparently using a Nokia 6310 too until it fell into a drain.

Videos: Nokia Lumia 1520 vs Nexus 5 vs LG G2

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:00 PM PST

Screen Shot 2013-12-05 at 22.05.14

Nokia’s big screened Nokia Lumia 1520 goes up against LG’s Nexus 5 and G2. This goes through the usual set of design, screen, camera, performance and price.

Just a little thing that’s on my mind with these comparisons:

Again, I don’t quite get the point of saying “on paper one screen has more detail” when both have the same resolution, neither is pentile (Nexus 5/Lumia 1520/G2 all have IPS LCD), you’re both showing the same amount of information on the same screen! The only difference perhaps would be that the larger device on such a high res screen would require less zooming in.

Every comparison about screen talks about the darn pixel density and thus with higher pixel density having more detail. You’re showing the same information on screen! Am I missing something here but why does he keep pointing this out and not something actually that makes a difference like, say screen visibility outdoors? They even state each time that they can’t tell the difference. Well duh!

If I have a 15″ 1080p monitor and a 16″ 1080p monitor of the same screen tech, the 15″ isn’t displaying more detail!
