Nokia Lumia 1020 (Lumia Black) versus Nokia 808 PureView

Steve from AAS compares how the Nokia Lumia 1020 is faring against the 808 now it’s on Lumia Black which can take further advantage from the 1020 hardware more so than ever before.

These are comparing stock shots, and not the RAW .DNG files the 1020 is capable of.

It’s good to hear that there is quite a bit of improvement from the 1020, namely reduction of the yellow tones (which in the samples makes the 1020 ‘pop’ a bit more). The 808 is still the winner for being ‘purer’ with colours. What it boils down to is that for Steve, the 1020 gets even closer to the 808, and for low light the 808 does pretty well to hold its own considering there’s no OIS.

There’s no doubting the purity of the Nokia 808′s photos in good light conditions or the effectiveness of its flash for capturing people indoors, but the 1020, with the Black update, is now oh so close to the 808′s results, sometimes even down to the pixel level, while retaining other advantages.

It has to be said that even a hardened Symbian fan like me has to stop and take stock when faced with the weight of advantages in the right hand column above.

To put things further into perspective, I’ve been using a Lumia 1020 as my primary smartphone for the last month now. Yes, there have been times when I’ve missed Symbian. Even occasions when I’ve missed Android. But day in, day out, the 1020 has served me well and, judging from the results above (on our review AT&T 1020), when the Black update hits worldwide 1020s my still photos will get even closer to the gold standard – the older Nokia 808.

Nokia N95 and N8 still in top 5 Nokia cameras on Flickr

Squeezing out yet another flickr related post because I thought this was interesting. Whilst there are numerous places to share pictures, Flickr remains one of the top places where photographers would display their art. Instagram is good but then you are reduced to a square of limited pixels.

Looking at the top 5 cameras, the top cameras include:

  1. Nokia Lumia 920 (previous Nokia Flagship)
  2. Nokia Lumia 1020 (Current Nokia Lumia Camera Flagship)
  3. Nokia Lumia 520 (the top selling Windows product and Nokia Lumia)
  4. Nokia N8 (the beast supreme with the 12MP Xenon shooter, rightfully taking over the N8 and showing everyone how the camera is done. It wasn’t overthrown by the competition. Only Nokia was able to beat Nokia N8 with the 808.
  5. Nokia N95 (One of the most successful Nokia smartphones. It was everywhere. The first to really bring convergence to the market. Considering the age and that it’s still top 5, that’s both kinda good and bad. Bad cos, well you’d want your most recent devices on top, but awesome cos it shows those as super popular iconic devices).

Over the last year, by percent of members, the Nokia 808 PureView joins this mix. The 920 and 1020 are the only ones on an incline.

The 1020 rockets up, being the first of the Lumias to REALLY focus on imaging and stand out (the 920 did a great job, but the 1020 was really the ‘wow’ piece we needed).

Lumia 525 Goes on Sale in China for $148/899 Yuan

(Image from UNleashThePhones.com)

The Lumia 525 has just gone on sale in China; marked at a reasonable $149 or 800 Yuan the device is likely set to be the same success story as the Lumia 520; making good headway in the low end with even less compromise on performance. The 525 has 1 Gb of ram instead of the 512 found in its predecessor, making it a more functional budget device, with access to more apps and games; in almost every other way it’s very similar to the 520 (even with the design).

The phone can be purchased from JD.com in China at the link below:

Swapping a DSLR for a Nokia Lumia 1020 – one year Nokia Lumia 1020 project

This holidays, I swapped my 60D for a Nokia Lumia 1020. It’s just more convenient not to have that bulk with me when spending time with friends and family.

This Christmas, we’re seeing even more folks switching to Lumia. Nokia Connects tweeted about a project where someone is doing the same switch, but for an entire year!

Check out nilchak‘s photos.

Here is a phone comparison with a difference as the devices. Two (Russian?) beauties with the Nokia Lumia 1020 and Sony Xperia Z1.

I’ve no idea what they’re saying. The video is really nicely shot and put together so you can also be enjoyed in mute.

Amanda Lam shared a link with us of some screenshots she took of the first native WhatsApp client for SailfishOS. It is created by @iCODeRUS.

The app was apparently previously known as Persecute.
